On and off rain Saturday morning had event organizers making tough decisions to cancel, while others decided to keep their events going, rain or shine. The Street Medicine Clinic for the Homeless at Balboa Park was canceled due to heavy rain Saturday morning. But the Northpark Arts Festival went on despite some sprinkles. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Ocean Beach could be getting a new Target, but only if the big box store figures out a way to get around a decades-old parking issue with the city. News of a possible Target Express store moving into the old Antique Center building had some residents like Zeb Ryan shaking his head. “Why do we need more corporate businesses here?” Ryan said. He pointed at the nearby CVS, saying everything he would get at a new Target Express is already around the corner. Other residents agreed, saying it’s a battle of the C’s — comfort vs. convenience.“I don’t know if you’re getting any comfort from a Target,” OB resident, Drew Sibley said. “You’re getting convenience. But not character. You’re getting a bunch of red stuff”The City if San Diego said that “Red” Store has some hoops to jump through before even thinking of coming to OB.The city has a longstanding parking agreement with the former Antique Center and popular restaurant, South Beach Bar And Grille.During the Antique Center's business hours, the lot adjacent to their store was theirs. When they closed at 5 p.m., it was designated specifically for South Beach Bar and Grill patrons. So if a Target Express were to move in, that parking agreement would be grandfathered in. That means the new Target Express must close it’s doors by 5 p.m. as well, unlike many of its other stores that are open until 11 p.m. or midnight.“It sounds like a mess,” Ryan said. Ryan believes it has been a mess all along, saying the original parking agreement was odd, considering the distance between the restaurant and the lot. The two are almost two blocks apart.“It’s a far walk to South Beach [Bar and Grille],” Ryan said. “You can just park in the pier for free.”But if it keeps Target from moving in, Ryan said he was all for it.”Why don’t we turn it into like an indoor skate park or something,” Ryan asked. Target Corporation sent 10News this statement:"Target is always exploring possible locations for new stores, and we’re continuing to pursue the site on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach. Work is continuing between the building owner and nearby restaurant to finalize the parking specifics at the location, and we are excited by the possibility of serving guests in the Ocean Beach community."The City of San Diego said owners of the South Beach Bar and Grille have also submitted paperwork, pursuing other parking options for their patrons.  2465

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- It was a battle over workers rights at a rally downtown Thursday. Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez directly addressing the group against her proposed Assembly Bill. Assembly Bill 5 would affect any independent contractor including Uber and Lyft drivers, yoga teachers even hairdressers. The group at Thursday’s rally was made up mostly of adult entertainers. “I’ve been doing fine I like the freedom to educate myself and if someone’s going to stop me from that I want to do something about that and voice my opinion," one woman told 10News. The bill would make many independent contractors full time employees, forcing employers to provide overtime, health care and sick leave. Assemblywoman Gonzalez rebutted the group today. "There’s nothing in the law that says an employee has to work from 9 to 6. Any employer can tell you to work two hours, one hour, any hours you choose. There’s nothing in the law that says an employer can’t be flexible.”Some say they don’t want it because they prefer the flexibility and freedom to decide hours that comes with independent contracting. 1104

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Five years since it was last open to the public, the iconic "Plunge" swimming pool is finally set to welcome San Diegans at Belmont Park."Oh, we're so excited. It's highly anticipated," said Belmont Park spokesperson Michelle McKee.The pool was one of the original attractions when the amusement park opened in 1925. However, it had run into hard times in recent years and has been closed for much of the last decade. One management company went bankrupt. The next came up with a renovation plan, only to discover dangerous, corroding conditions inside, leading to the pool's closure in 2014. Work finally began in earnest in 2017, tearing out much of the Plunge infrastructure, while trying to maintain a link to its historic nature."It was a wonderful pool," McKee said. "We wanted to maintain the structure of some of those elements, so that remains here in the pool."A signature element, a large mural by the renowned artist Wyland, had to be removed. In its place is a new, bright, open look. Windows surround the pool, giving swimmers a view of the ocean. A retractable roof will help control the climate inside the glass space.The high-end gym company "Fit" is building a club on the upper floors. Fit will manage the pool. Members will have access to the pool. The public can purchase day passes. With a dynamic pricing plan, adult passes will begin at .Some San Diegans who have been to the plunge in the past worry that the price point will drive out locals and turn the Plunge into a tourist haven."I feel like when it's not tourist seaon, like summer when there's not many tourists, it's just going to be there. I don't think a lot of people will be going to it," said Makenna Gingrich."Spending is outrageous," said Scarlett Clancy.The Plunge will have its grand reopening July 4. Passes are currently on sale.
