SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego firefighters found themselves in an unusual position Thursday, battling flames inside a city water tower. The fire broke out as crews were demolishing the tower on federal property in Point Loma. Officials said some of the materials the demolition team was using to cut the tank apart caught the scaffolding on fire. “The wind today drove that fire and blew it very quickly,” a firefighter told 10News. With much of the tower covered in plastic, firefighters had to go inside, climbing through scaffolding with their hoses. “The potential for three rescues and the hook and ladder trucks out here, I thought maybe this is a serious event but they seem to have it completely under control,” said neighbor Casey Schnoor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police officers who fired shots at a man in Rolando last year were justified in their use of deadly force, the San Diego District Attorney’s office announced Monday. Body camera video recorded by San Diego Police shows the officers engaged in gunfire with Joe Darwish on June 23, 2018. Police responded to a disturbance call at the condo on Rolando Court. When they smelled smoke, they called firefighters to the scene, the DA’s office said in a news release. Firefighters forced entry into the home but were met with gunfire. Darwish shot one officer in the back with a large caliber weapon, according to the DA’s office. Two officers returned fire as they provided cover for the wounded officer, who couldn’t move for several seconds. The wounded officer eventually managed to roll onto his stomach and crawl away from the line of fire. Darwish also shot a second officer during the exchange of gunfire. Darwish had also been hit in the face and arm from one of the officers’ shotguns. “This harrowing incident shows just how quickly a routine call for service can turn deadly for police officers who suddenly found themselves in the line of fire, trying to protect their wounded fellow officers and keep the shooter from endangering members of the public,” said District Attorney Summer Stephan. “It’s a tribute to these officers’ bravery and quick response that the gunman didn’t injure more people or kill the officers and firefighters involved.” Darwish had been wearing a bulletproof vest. Our source said the FBI asked the District Attorney's Office to sign off on having a judge issue a search warrant, but the DA’s Office did not do so.For 7 weeks, 10News had been trying to confirm this with the DA’s Office. After our 10News attorneys got involved, the DA’s Office sent us a letter reading in part, “On June 13, 2018, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office received a request by law enforcement to review a draft of an affidavit in support of a search warrant to conduct a search of Mr. Darwish's person, property and residence. The District Attorney's Office determined that the warrant was legally deficient and so advised law enforcement.”June 13th was 10 days before the big shooting. 10News asked the DA’s Office why it turned down the FBI’s request to do a search warrant, but the DA’s Office stated it was "exempt from disclosure".This afternoon, we emailed the DA's Office for new comment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Roughly 24 hours after stepping foot on Hawaiian soil, San Diego mother Christina Adele said that she and her family flew back home from vacation once Hawaiian state health officials had them quarantine after not accepting their negative test results.“I was in tears,” she told ABC10 News. She said that before the trip she checked Hawaii's entry checklist which requires a negative nucleic acid amplification test performed by a trusted partner, including CVS Pharmacy. She said that she and her family went to a CVS in Poway to get tested, which is where she said that she clarified with CVS staff that their testing would be adequate. “I said, ‘We're going to Hawaii. We need to make sure this is not an antigen or antibody test,’ and they assured me it wasn't,” she added.The family’s excitement quickly faded after their plane touched down in Hawaii. Adele said that Hawaiian health officials did not accept their tests and said that her family was instructed to quarantine for 14 days in their room at their resort.“[The resort staff said] if we see you out at all we're going to call the Hawaiian Police Department and you will go to jail,” she told ABC10 News. “I didn't pack much of anything for my son. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police announced Friday the arrest of a man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman in East Village.Gary Cushinberry, 51, dragged the woman into some bushes near 13th Street and Island Avenue about 11:30 p.m. on November 5, police said. After the assault, Cushinberry ran west toward Island Avenue, police said.The woman had been walking alone to her car when she was attacked.The San Diego Police Department’s Sex Crimes Unit released a composite sketch of the suspect the following day. Through tips and leads, investigators identified Cushinberry as the suspect.Police found Cushinberry Friday morning in the 200 block of 17th Street. He was arrested on several sex assault charges and taken to San Diego County Central Jail.Officers also confirmed that Cushinberry had an outstanding warrant for theft in Allen County, Indiana.Police are asking anyone with information to call the SDPD Sex Crimes Unit at 619-531-2210. 975

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Monday a larger investment into a program creating job opportunities for the homeless. Wheels of Change was launched in 2018 as a public-private partnership providing jobs and training for those living in the Alpha Project bridge shelter. “It’s innovative, it’s unique. It’s working it’s growing and it’s making a difference in people’s lives,” said Faulconer. The program is expanding from three to ten shifts per week, with participants earning per hour as they remove litter and debris through the Clean SD initiativee. An additional van is also being provided to transport the 20 workers. The City of San Diego doubled its investment to 0,000 this fiscal year.
