Heavy rain caused a central Texas river to rise to a near-record level in about a day, leading to a bridge collapse, flooded homes and evacuations. The Llano River rose to nearly 40 feet Tuesday in the city of Llano -- about 35 feet higher than it was just 24 hours earlier before -- thanks to 8 to 10 inches of rain that fell in the area over the past two days, the National Weather Service said.A few miles away, in Kingsland, the swollen river rushed against the top of the RM 2900 bridge for hours, eventually causing it to collapse, video from CNN affiliate KEYE showed. No one appeared to be on the bridge, and no injuries were immediately reported.Video from Darlene Walthall also showed the river washing over the span before the collapse. The Llano County Office of Emergency Management ordered people living within a quarter mile of the river to evacuate Tuesday morning. The Llano River meets the Colorado River in Kingsland. Houses near the Colorado were flooded, resident Terri Kleen said. Video that she posted to Instagram showed water rising to the top of boat dock structures.Law enforcement officers were helping people from flooded areas, she said.In nearby Marble Falls, Dale Heath recorded video of a car stuck in rushing water from a swollen Backbone Creek, a Colorado River tributary. The flooded communities are about a 90-minute drive northwest of Austin. The Llano River's crest of 39.91 feet in Llano was just below the record high of 41.5 feet there in June 1935.The river is expected to recede through Tuesday afternoon, but should stay in the major flood stage -- over 23 feet -- through Wednesday morning. 1654

HELENA, MT. - About 120 soldiers arrived in Helena after a year-long deployment to the Middle East. The Montana Army National Guard 1-189th General Support Aviation Battalion deployed to the Middle East in October 2019 and conducted operations throughout the Middle East like Syria and Iraq. National Guard leadership was one of the first to welcome home their soldiers.“The wind, the weather, they're coming out of Fort Hood, which is much warmer and they're stoked,” says Donald Emerson, Assistant Adjutant General for the Montana National Guard. “They're happy, doesn't matter. They're just glad to be with their families. It's great to see."In total, about 240 soldiers reunited with their families in Montana, dropping them off in airports nearest to home. The Montana National Guard dropped off their soldiers in groups of about 50 to maintain pandemic changes. Then they were led to their families, and they also received a community reunion from people outside the hangar waiting to welcome them home.“I just wanted to welcome these guys home,” says Puanani Wevers, a Helena resident. She stood outside waving an American flag as soldiers were leaving the hangar. “I mean, it's been a year that parents have, you know, not had their children home and loved ones. The least we can do is come out and support these guys."The Montana National Guard respectfully declined all interview requests with these soldiers, simply stating they just wanted to get them home in the arms of their loved ones. This story was first reported by Alexie Aguayo at KXLH in Helena, Montana. 1582

Hours after Roseanne Barr blamed her use of sleep medication Ambien for a racist tweet, the makers of the drug responded with a tweet of their own."People of all races, religions and nationalities work at Sanofi every day to improve the lives of people around the world,"  Sanofi US, the makers of Ambien, tweeted. "While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication."Dictonary.com's Twitter account also trolled Barr's excuse, tweeting "The name Ambien is thought to come from the word "ambient" or similar words in French. Ambient does not mean "prone to making racist comments," but it does mean "of the surrounding area or environment.""In a since-deleted tweeted on Tuesday night, Barr said she was "Ambien tweeting" when she sent a racist tweet about a former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett on the night of Memorial Day."guys I did something unforgiveable (sic) so do not defend me. It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting-it was memorial day too-i went 2 far & do not want it defeneded-it was egregious Indefensible. I made a mistake I wish I hadn't but...don't defend it please. ty,
