SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The COVID-19 pandemic has left a big question mark in regards to NCAA athletics. However, that is not the case with California Junior Colleges, otherwise known as the CCCAA, as they have already come up with a plan for the fall. That means for the next 5 months, athletic fields at Mesa College will be quiet until early 2021."There was a lot of talk," says Mesa College Athletic Director Ryan Schumaker, "and a lot of plans, that included getting sports back on the field quicker. But it just didn't seem feasible, especially when we saw the state start to take steps backwards. It just seemed like the right thing to do, to push it back as far as we could."So in the case of Mesa College, all 21 of their athletic teams will not get started until some point in the spring."The goal is to get our student athletes on campus safely, as well as our staff," says Mesa College Head Football Coach Gary Watkins. "I know we won't start practice until February, but there may be some time in January to get in front of the boys. At that time, will get them acclimated physically and mentally. Now, more than ever, they have to be all in on their academics, and their future development."And with will all sports being pushed back until the spring, the athletic department at Mesa will have to figure out how to share the facilities."The spring is now split into two distinct seasons. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of shooting two people outside a Metallica concert in the Gaslamp, including an off-duty sheriff’s deputy was back in court Tuesday.In July Ray Pitoau had his first trial. He was found guilty of three firearm charges, including felon in possession of a gun.The jury deadlocked when charging him with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The District Attorney’s Office refiled for a retrial.RELATED: Gaslamp deputy shooting suspect escapes Spring Valley SWAT standoffA few months later that retrial is in session and Pitoau now faces potential life in prison for allegedly shooting sheriff’s deputy Jason Philpot three times, aiming the gun at his brother, Joshua Philpot and shooting and hitting a third person walking by.During his testimony Tuesday, Pitoau tells the jury he didn’t intent on actually firing the gun. "When I see the gun it was like okay you know what I mean, just show it to these guys. It be like okay split parts, I run this way they run that way. It be cool," Pitoau said.Pitoau was asked by the defense attorney and prosecutor to recollect the night of August 7, 2017. The night he got into an altercation with the Philpot brothers and it ended in shots fired.RELATED: Suspect in Gaslamp shooting that injured off-duty deputy arrested in MexicoWhen Pitoau grabbed the gun from his friend that night he tells the jurors he didn’t think Jason Philpot in law enforcement and would know how to remove a gun from a shooter.“I had it in my right hand his left hand cam over my hand and his right hand came under my hand,” Pitoau continued. “So he grabbed the whole thing like he close don it so he started twisting my wrist." Pitoau went over the entire night and even included details of fleeing the country after he saw the shooting on the news the next morning. “I took off to Mexico, well I cut my hair, shaved my beard and then I walked to the trolley station and went to Mexico."After a month in Tijuana he was brought back to the United States and immediately handed over to U.S. Marshals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Carte Hotel in the heart of Little Italy is not nearly as full as it could be.It had been open just a few months before the pandemic hit, "We had a great start until March and the virus started showing up," said general manager Henri Birmele.Like many other hotels in California, The Carte is only allowed to book rooms for essential workers.But staff is preparing for when the Governor says they can fully reopen. "We have sanitizers on every floor, every piece of equipment that's available we have throughout the building to take care of team members and hotel guests," Birmele said Common areas will be sanitized every hour, the restaurant and rooftop bar will be spaced out to make it easier to social distance, valet service won't be available, there will be at least 12 hours and a deep clean between when one person checks out and another checks in and room service will leave orders at the door instead of bringing them in. The Carte is hoping to ease people back into hotels by encouraging "staycations" and planning to offer locals discounts and deals. "How people react, I don't know. I think time will tell. I think we have all the precautions in place to make sure that everyone is safe during their stay," said Birmele. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man police say hit and killed a pedestrian on a South Bay road in late July has been arrested.According to police, Carlos Franco, 20, turned himself in to investigators Tuesday and was booked into jail for vehicular manslaughter.San Diego Police on July 30 received a report of a crash on Del Sol Boulevard and Dennery Road at 7:03 a.m.RELATED: Pedestrian hit, killed on south San Diego street  Police say Franco struck a 66-year-old man, who was crossing the street at the time of the crash. The man, who hasn’t been identified by police, was pronounced dead at the scene.Following the crash, Franco stayed on scene. Police say drugs or alcohol weren’t factors in the crash. 712
