All 157 people on board an Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed soon after taking off from Addis Ababa have been killed, the airline said on Sunday morning. The plane, en route to Nairobi, Kenya, lost contact at 8:44 a.m. local time, six minutes after taking off from Bole International Airport in the Ethiopian capital. The aircraft, flight number ET302, went down near Bishoftu, southeast of Addis Ababa. An airline spokesperson told CNN the victims were of 35 different nationalities. The spokesperson said 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, nine Ethiopians, eight Americans, eight Italians and seven UK nationals were among the passengers.Eight Chinese passengers were also on board, said Li Liang, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy to Ethiopia.Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Tewolde GebreMariam, told reporters at a press conference that the pilot had reported technical difficulties and asked for clearance to return to Addis Ababa. He was given clearance to turn back, according to GebreMariam, citing the Air Traffic Controllers record. The pilot was a senior Ethiopian Airlines pilot who had flown more than 8,000 hours. He had an "excellent flying record," according to the CEO.The CEO visited the crash site on Sunday. He said the plane "is now right inside the ground" and it was not possible to identify whether it was an emergency landing or a crash. He said there was still smoke at the site when he visited."As it is a fresh incident, we have not been able to determine the cause. As I said, it is a brand new airplane with no technical remarks, flown by a senior pilot and there is no cause that we can attribute at this time.""The routine maintenance check didn't reveal any problems," GebreMariam added.Asked about the possibility of terrorism or sabotage: "At this stage we cannot rule out anything." The Boeing 737 MAX 8 is the same type of plane as the Indonesian Lion Air jet that crashed soon after takeoff from Jakarta in 2018 -- killing 189 people."They of course are the same [model of 737 MAX 8] planes," but GebreMariam said only an investigation could make any conclusions. The airline said in an earlier statement that staff would "be sent to the accident scene and will do everything possible to assist the emergency services."It added that a passenger information center and hotline "will be available shortly for family or friends of those who may have been on flight."The Ethiopian government expressed its "deepest condolences to the families," the office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who first broke the news of the crash, said on Twitter.Ethiopian Airlines has gained the reputation of being one of the best airlines in Africa. It has a good safety record and the newest fleet of planes on the African continent, 2778

A woman who survived 17 days in a forest in Hawaii after she got lost while hiking says she was irresponsible for going into the woods unprepared."It was na?ve and irresponsible of me to go out into the woods the way that I did," Amanda Eller, 35, said in a Facebook video Friday. Her response comes amid criticism for her comments comparing her hike last month to a spiritual journey. She acknowledged her words may have "bypassed" the details of what really happened."This was never intentional, and I didn't set out that day on a spiritual journey. I set out that day to go through a simple hike through the woods," she said.Eller has said she set out on a hike to the Makawao Forest Reserve in Maui to connect with nature and get grounded. She rarely went to that park and hadn't been in months. The physical therapist figured she'd go for a 3-mile hike and spend a couple of hours in the woods."I don't really know what happened," she said told reporters Tuesday. "All I can say is that ... I have strong sense of internal guidance, whatever you want to call that -- a voice, spirit, everybody has a different name for it."She said it turned out to be not nearly as strong when after meditating on a log she wanted to go back to her car.She tried one path and it didn't get her back to her car. She tried another and realized she wasn't on a human path; she was on a boar path."At that point I had no choice because everything looked the same. I said, 'The only thing I have is my gut. I don't have a compass. I don't have a cell phone,'" she said. "'So, spirit,' or whatever you want to pray to, I said, 'I need your help right now.'"She said she listened to her sense of guidance, which instead of taking her back to her car, took her on a 5-mile journey, one she called a "spiritual boot camp."She spent 17 days in the woods trying to stay alive and catch the attention of searchers in helicopters. Rescuers found her on May 24 after more than two weeks in the wilderness. She spent two days in a Maui hospital being treated for severe sunburn, a twisted knee and ankle problems before she went home Monday night.Eller thinks the days she spent alone in the woods, surviving on berries and stream water, is part of something bigger, something that has been changing her life since she moved to Maui four years ago. 2331

A romance scam has claimed another victim, a woman hoping for some companionship, but whose Mr. Right turned out to be all wrong.Petronica Williams thought she found the man of her dreams on Instagram, a great looking, New York City-based fitness trainer."He inboxed me on Instagram," Williams said, "saying 'hey gorgeous, I want to get to know you.' "Her Romeo sent videos, showing him training some of the stars of the VH1 reality show "Love and Hip Hop." Williams couldn't believe he was interested in her, but he was.She says their messaging got more and more intense, and he wanted her to come to his fitness studio in New York. Unfortunately, first he had to go to Africa on a short assignment. That's when trouble developed.New friend needs money to get home"He said he was over there working as a fitness trainer on a contract," Williams said. "But he was stranded and needed a way to get home."He needed money fast -- specifically 0 for a plane ticket home from Africa. He promised to return the money to her as soon as he got back to the U.S.So a love-struck Williams wired it to him through MoneyGram, and figured he was on his way.But he soon messaged her again, saying the Republic of Benin, in West Africa, would not let him leave unless he paid his income taxes first."They won't let me go home because I owe ,500 in taxes," the trainer messaged her. Before Williams took the time to realize what she was doing, she said, "I sent him a total ,076." Only after he stopped texting her back did she start suspecting she had been duped, that her fitness trainer may have been conning her from West Africa all along. 1644
