SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Federal wildlife officials were urged Wednesday to withdraw a proposal to drop 1.5 tons of rat poison on remote islands off the coast of California to kill a mice infestation until it addresses questions on the impact to wildlife.The California Coastal Commission heard public comment on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan, which has drawn criticism from local conservation groups. The commission is seeking to determine whether the plan complies with state coastal management rules.The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a report presented to the commission in March that a massive house mice population is threatening the whole ecosystem on the rugged Farallon Islands, 27 miles (44 kilometers) off the coast of San Francisco.The archipelago is home to the largest seabird breeding colony in the contiguous United States, with approximately 300,000 to 350,000 birds of 13 species, including the rare ashy storm petrels. The islands are also used by marine mammal species for resting and breeding and by migratory birds.Federal wildlife officials proposed using helicopters to dump 2,900 pounds (1,315 kilograms) of cereal grain pellets laced with brodifacoum, an anticoagulant that causes rodents to bleed to death, which is banned in California.Officials acknowledged the plan will kill some seagulls and other species but argue that the benefits of eliminating the invasive species will heal the whole ecosystem."The only way to protect these species and allow the ecosystem to recover is 100% eradication of the mice," said Pete Warzibok, a biologist who has worked on the Farallon Islands for more than 20 years. "Anything else is simply a stopgap measure that will not adequately address the problem."Critics argued the poison will not only kill the mice, first introduced by ships that stopped in the islands 200 years ago, but also wildlife on the island and scavengers that would feed on the carcasses of the poisoned animals."These poisons are deadly, they persist in the environment for hundreds of days and they do kill animals," said Alison Hermance, the spokeswoman for the conservation group WildCare."The situation on the Farallon Islands has existed for decades. It does not need to be solved overnight with a massive poison drop," she said.The commission has no power to veto the plan but before federal officials can proceed, their plan needs approval from the various state and federal agencies.After a nearly two-hour hearing, commissioners said they still have questions on the impact to seabirds and other species. "We haven't been convinced that this is the best and only way to go," Commission Chair Dayna Bochco said.The commissioners asked federal officials to withdraw the proposal and resubmit it after their questions have been answered.The project would be implemented in the November-December time period when the mouse population is declining and food stressed, and would occur no sooner than late 2020. 2975

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Neighbors are shaken up after a home invasion in University City. “I wouldn’t have expected it because I feel like this area UTC especially is pretty safe,” says neighbor Alana Schnoor. San Diego police got the call early Monday morning, around 1 a.m, from the home in the 5300 block of Toscana Way.Two men wearing masks went inside of an unlocked apartment. One of them pointed a gun at the people inside, while the other grabbed phones and laptops. Police say one of the victims grabbed the gun and fought the robber. The intruder hit the man with the weapon, and both robbers ran out. “It’s a safe area. I just wouldn’t have expected someone with a gun going into an apartment like that,” said neighbor Amy Kaido. Unfortunately, some Apple users with the latest phones say they're not able to go to third-party shops. Four years ago, Christopher McQueen said he found the perfect niche business. “People are always breaking their phones, late at night,” McQueen said.He is the owner of Mobile Cell Doctors. He will come to you and fix your phone.“To be able to fix your phone in 10 minutes, versus a 3-hour fiasco at Apple, it was a need that was definitely there,” McQueen said. He said he can fix any hardware problems, except on the most recent iPhone models - iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X.Just recently, iPhone 8 user Lucas Peckham went to McQueen to get his broken screen replaced. His choices were 0 with McQueen or 9 at the Apple Store. He chose the cheaper, more convenient option.Peckham said everything was flawless until one morning, he woke up to a phone with a frozen screen. He could not swipe, touch, type, or do anything with his device. Peckham said it happened after his phone automatically updated overnight, installing the Apple 11.3 Software.McQueen said he was suddenly inundated with calls from all of his previous iPhone 8 customers. “It’s been a nightmare,” McQueen said. He said he had fixed about 100 iPhone 8’s in the last six months. He suggested to his customers, to do what they hoped to avoid by going to him in the first place - go to the Apple Store. But Peckham said, when he showed Apple the problem, he was told, because he previously used a third-party repairman, they could not repair it. Instead, he had to replace it with a brand new screen for 0 - or buy a whole new phone. “I totally felt screwed,” Peckham said. With no other option, Peckham said he gave in, spending six hours at the Apple Store, and paying up the 0. “It was basically a way for Apple to create kind of a monopoly on the iPhone screen,” Peckham said. Last month, California became the 18th state to introduce a “Right to Repair” Bill, which would require electronics manufacturers to make repair information and parts available to owners and third-party repair shops.McQueen hopes this legislation passes, so mom-and-pop business owners like him also get to have a piece of the pie. “I would love to fix those,” McQueen said. “But until they release the software to run the phones that would allow third-parties to work on those devices, we can’t fix them.”10News spoke to Apple, who said they do work with Authorized third-party dealers that are not Apple Stores.
