ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — One person is dead following a multi-car crash on Interstate 15 in North San Diego County.A 25-year-old man from Chula Vista was behind the wheel of a Mustang traveling southbound on I-15 collided with at least three vehicles just before 6:30 a.m. just north of the State Route 76 connector, according to California Highway Patrol.The driver of the Mustang was seriously injured and taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he later died. Fat Bear Week is back, and voting is now open. The event is hosted by Katmai National Park and features a dozen brown bears preparing for hibernation.It’s an annual tournament comparing chubby bears and it’s getting renewed attention in 2020 as pandemic-weary Americans search for reasons to smile and look at adorable wildlife.Katmai National Park selects 12 bears preparing for the winter, some have names like “Holly,” who was 2019’s winner, “Grazer,” “Chunk,” “Otis,” and “Walker,” while others are identified by number. They then offer images of the bears from early this summer to images taken in the last few weeks to show how the animals are growing.Voting starts Wednesday and the head-to-head match-ups continue through October 6. Watch the animals on Katmai’s BearCam and vote daily on who is getting to be the fattest.A brown bear eats a year’s worth of food in just six months to help them survive through the winter, when they slow down and hibernate in their dens.The tournament is a way to celebrate the success of healthy bears doing what bears do. 1073

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — An Escondido home that was engulfed in flames early Friday reignited for a second time later the same day.The home in the 800 block of Via Rancho Parkway first ignited just before 2:40 a.m., according to Escondido Fire Department. Fire investigators believe that the fire started in the home's garage and spread to the attic.One adult, three children, and five pets were inside the home when the fire began. The pets woke up one of the children, prompting the family to escape the home.One of the pets, a cat, died in the fire, according to Escondido Fire. The American Red Cross helped the family find lodging after being displaced.Later Friday, just before 6 p.m., the home re-ignited, prompting another round of firefighting.The cause of both fires has not been identified. 811

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Opening a new small business in the middle of this pandemic is a risky move, but San Diegans are doing it. Candles on Tap in downtown Encinitas is taking the chance."Today is a big, nerve-wracking, exciting day but we are opening to the public," CEO and co-founder Chantel Johnson said. She and CFO and co-founder Marcus Wandell are hopeful about their new venture. "The feature event is the scent bar where you pull up a chair and pour your own blend," said Wandell. Johnson added, "We are a custom scent bar so when people come in, they’re able to hand pour their own soy candles, diffusers, and fragrance sprays and they get to choose from over 90 scents." Wandell says some of his personal favorites in their shop include a scent called "old books" and they also have a "cannabis" smell.The two are well aware of what they’re getting into. "We're opening in the middle of a pandemic and it's a brick and mortar store so what could go wrong, right?" Wandell said jokingly.Yet, they say they see this time as the perfect opportunity. “There's pent up energy and demand to get out and do something as long as it’s safe so we're seizing on that need in the community for folks to find an experience to do with their loved ones and friends,” says Wandell.The pair are not alone. The U.S. Census reports almost 3.3 million business applications have been filed this year which is up 700,000 from this time last year. There were reportedly more than 1.6 million quarterly applications. In California alone, week 43 saw almost 9,000 applications which is a 25% increase from this time last year.“Some of our friends [say we’re] so brave. This is a bold move but everyone's really excited for us,” added Johnson.Candles on Tap is located at 687 S Coast Hwy 101 Unit 155 in Encinitas.
