Experts say a scammer cloning a phone number can happen to anyone and a Nebraska woman says her number is being used to try and solicit others.Caller ID "spoofing" is used to disguise someone's identity and is usually to trick a person into giving away personal information for criminal activity, or money. Now, many in Omaha are seeing local numbers including the same prefix show up on a call.Evy Akpan says recently she was receiving multiple calls a day from people who said she had called them several times when she hadn't called them at all."If I'm trying to live my life, and I'm getting phone calls throughout the day, and my phone is constantly ringing for a scam purpose, it's frustrating," Akpan said. "And also just receiving these voicemails of upset people chewing me a new one, and I'm like, 'I'm not calling you!' "The Better Business Bureau of Nebraska, SW Iowa, South Dakota, and Great Plains Kansas said scammers usually only clone a person's number for 24-48 hours then move on to new ones. The Federal Communications Commission says it's best not to pick up a call from an unknown number because if you do, criminals will know your number is active."Really, it's important not to trust the caller ID. The fact that it says it's coming from an area code that we're not familiar with doesn't really mean anything these days," said Jim Hegarty, CEO of the BBB Nebraska.The FCC adds that if your number's been spoofed, there's not much you can do other than change your voicemail to let people know of the situation. 1557

Even though Jacob Walter Anderson was indicted on four counts of sexual assault, the ex-fraternity president won't spend a single day in prison.Instead, a plea agreement allowed the former Baylor University student to plead no contest to a lesser charge of unlawful restraint.If the 24-year-old successfully completes three years of deferred probation and pays a 0 fine, his criminal record will be wiped clean of the charge, and he won't have to register as a sex offender, CNN affiliate KWKT said.The plea agreement between Anderson's defense team and the McLennan County, Texas, district attorney's office infuriated the victim and her attorney."The evidence is incredible," Vic Feazell, the woman's attorney, told KWKT. "He nearly choked her to death. He raped her violently. He left her passed out in her own vomit -- the rape exam confirmed rape."The incident happened February 21, 2016, the woman said, according her victim impact statement posted on KWKT's website.She lambasted the court for accepting the plea agreement."I am devastated by your decision to let my rapist Jacob Walter Anderson go free without any punishment," the woman said."He is now free to roam society, stalk women and no one will know he is a sex offender. When I was completely unconscious he dumped me face down in the dirt and left me there to die. He had taken what he wanted, had proven his power over my body. Federal agencies say cybercriminals are unleashing a major ransomware assault against the U.S. healthcare system. Independent security experts say it has already hobbled at least four U.S. hospitals this month, and could potentially impact hundreds more. And while the placards create plenty of visual litter, what's more concerning is the physical litter they can cause.Judith Enck, the President of Beyond Plastics says candidates need to take responsibility for their political signs."Lots of people who run for office run more than once," she said. "If they were in a two-year term, they're going to need signs in another two years, so they really should go out and collect the signs and store them somewhere and reuse them."Enck also says that because a candidate's campaign is already responsible for putting up the signs, they should also be responsible for taking them down after the election.She adds that most campaign signs aren't recyclable. While most signs used to be made entirely of cardboard, newer signs often now include a plastic coating. The coating protects the ink from sun, rain and snow, but also means candidates can't recycle signs after the election.Enck argues that in most cases, the plastic coating on a cardboard campaign is unnecessary."They pop up like mushrooms in the month of October, so I'm not sure that all that plastic coating is necessary," she said.
