PARIS (AP) — Oscar winner Olivia de Havilland, best known as the kindly Melanie in “Gone With the Wind,” has died. She was 104.Publicist Lisa Goldberg said the actress died peacefully of natural causes on Sunday at her home in Paris.The doe-eyed brunette was among the last of the great stars from the studio age and was the last surviving major performer from “Gone With the Wind.”The star won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in 1946's “To Each His Own,” and won it again for her work in 1949's “The Heiress.”The sister of actress Joan Fontaine, de Havilland also appeared with Errol Flynn in several movies, including “The Adventures of Robin Hood.” 693

Point Roberts, Washington, is a bit of a geographical anomaly. Just south of the 49th parallel, Point Roberts is surrounded by water to its south, east and west. The only road that leads out of town is into Delta, British Columbia.With access across the United States/Canadian border limited to essential travel, border restrictions in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic has hamstrung the town.While the United States and Canada worked out an agreement of a land pass for those traveling between the Lower 48 and Alaska, there is no such agreement for Point Roberts and its 1,300 residents.Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has requested the Canadian government to allow Point Roberts residents be able to cross the border more freely. The letter was addressed last week to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau."Given the community’s isolation, there are very limited services available in Point Roberts and residents customarily travel into Canada or to Whatcom County to obtain needed goods and services, including regularly accessing schools and education centers due to quarantine rules,” Inslee said. “As such, Washingtonians living in Point Roberts face unique hardships resulting from COVID-19 border closures, including challenges for students’ academic and athletic careers, increased uncertainty for local businesses, and an inability to see family and loved ones living outside the Point Roberts enclave on the Tsawwassen peninsula."Currently, the US/Canada border is closed to non-essential travel through September 21. 1536

Pilots coming into LAX airport in the Los Angeles area on Sunday reported something that sounded right out of a movie from nearby Hollywood. PIERCE TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Getting cited by the police doesn't always have to be a bad thing in Pierce Township. Police Chief Jeff Bachman said his men have added a new type of ticket to their arsenal: A yellow slip recognizing the actions of residents who take time to do the right thing for others."You'll get a call from maybe a disabled motorist, someone with a flat tire, and you pull up and someone is already changing that tire," Bachman said. Those are the people honored by the new golden tickets, each of which comes with a Walmart gift card. Bachman said he hoped the initiative would inject some happiness into his community and help people connect with police in a positive way."We see a lot of negativity on the news, in our job, but why not accent the positive?" he said. "People do good things."Twenty-one-year-old Sadie LaRoque and 20-year-old Matthew Murphy were the latest golden ticket recipients this week."We were sitting in the parking lot of the movie theater after our movie got out, and we saw some teenagers acting suspicious -- leaning up against somebody's car, touching it," LaRoque said.These witnesses turned investigators wanted to do the right thing, so they approached the teenagers and jotted down their license plate information, which went a long way for police. "We have great residents," Officer Philip Gammon said. PASADENA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A float in the Rose Parade unexpectedly caught fire Tuesday morning. Video shows the Chinese American Heritage Foundation’s train float proceeding down its normal route when suddenly smoke begins to appear. Later in the video, the float can be seen stopping, backing up traffic along the route. The Rose Parade’s Twitter account tweeted that the fire was due to “technical difficulties.” One of the 2019 #RoseParade floats is experiencing technical difficulties at Orange Grove and Colorado.
