This all came to light on May 5, 2019, when police arrested Herrera at the US-Mexico border. Days prior, the girl's mother found inappropriate messages from Herrera on her daughter's phone.Because of the nature of the charges, and Herrera's second home in Mexico, the prosecution requested million bail. As his own attorney, Herrera fought back, saying he is a Navy veteran with a 25-year clean record with the district."It's not conceivable for someone with my earnings to make million, nor would I flee," Herrera pleaded. "I have been a person of honor and honesty since the beginning."The judge disagreed and kept the bail at million, handing Herrera his first loss, leaving him in utter disbelief.The judge also put a criminal protection order for the now-17-year-old victim. If convicted, Herrera could face a maximum of 16 years eight months in prison. But the prosecution mentioned, more time could be added if they find more evidence of sexual abuse. 2037

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The man in the center of a viral video depicting a police arrest appeared in San Diego County Superior Court Tuesday. But he was there for another case, dating back to 2017.20-year-old Trenelle Cannon spoke at one of his many court appearances scheduled for this week. This one was regarding a robbery from 2017, where prosecutors said Cannon snatched a ,000 gold chain off a person's neck."The defendant was seen running to a vehicle, and that vehicle took off. There was a police hot stop on it. The defendant ran from the passenger and left the necklace inside," Deputy District Attorney, George Modlin said. But Cannon made headlines because of a controversial video, released Wednesday. The 12-second video was recorded from the back of a sedan that Cannon was riding with four others. Police said despite a demand to stop, the driver sped off onto Interstate 5. Near the freeway exit, police conducted a traffic stop. That's where the video begins. Cannon's girlfriend Shakira Smith, who took the video, said the man on the other end of the officers' punches, is Cannon. But San Diego Police said the 12-second video does not show the whole story, of how the 20-year-old had multiple outstanding warrants. According to San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit, officers were surveilling Cannon before the incident. When he took off, Chief Nislet said officers chased him. When they got close, he noted Cannon resisted, which resulted in the necessary force, which he called "physical strikes and distraction strikes.""Cannon refused to cooperate and struggled to keep his hands in front of his body." Chief Nisleit said. Cannon's loved ones said that was police brutality."He is quickly pulled out of the vehicle by his shirt, head first, throwing him down to the ground aggressively," girlfriend Shakira Smith said. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A suspect was arrested in a 1970s-era killing in California after investigators used the same advanced DNA testing that helped crack the Golden State Killer case, authorities said Thursday.John Arthur Getreu, 75, was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting and strangling 21-year-old Janet Ann Taylor in March 1974, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office announced.Taylor was last seen alive attempting to hitchhike from Palo Alto to her home in nearby La Honda. Her body was found along a busy street.Getreu was already in custody in Santa Clara County after being charged last year with sexually assaulting and strangling Leslie Perlov, another 21-year-old woman, in 1973.Investigators previously believed the killings of Perlov and Taylor were connected. But their cases had gone unsolved until DNA testing evolved enough to deliver credible results from the degraded DNA collected at both killing scenes.Authorities in both counties submitted DNA samples to the same publicly available DNA database used to identify Joseph DeAngelo, who authorities believe is the Golden State Killer.Getreu was linked to both killings after the testing connected him to both crime scenes, investigators said.In the Golden State Killer case, investigators used DNA from the attacks to locate a relative of DeAngelo then turned to traditional techniques to find the suspect.Authorities have linked the Golden State Killer to 13 attacks of women throughout California between 1974 and 1986."Law enforcement is not giving up on victims," Assistant San Mateo County Sheriff Gregory Rothaus said at a news conference on Getreu in Redwood City. But some experts say this may not have a significant effect in San Diego County.It all began with the 1968 Fair Housing Act (FHA), a law that came out of the Civil Rights Era, abolishing lending discrimination and redlining neighborhoods according to race and other factors."A lot of communities here in San Diego, you can look at your deeds, and if you look in a pre-war neighborhood here, you are very likely to see that in the past, there was covenant against selling to a person of color," Stephen Russell, Executive Director of the San Diego Housing Federation, said. "That history is not that old."Then came the Obama-Era Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH Rule). This was a supplement to the FHA that required local governments receiving federal funds to create plans to fight continued housing discrimination.But on Wednesday, President Trump tweeted:"I am happy to inform all of the people living their Suburban Lifestyle Dream that you will no longer be bothered or financially hurt by having low income housing built in your neighborhood ... Your housing prices will go up based on the market, and crime will go down. I have rescinded the Obama-Biden AFFH Rule.
