BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- China appreciates India's decision to terminate a trade investigation into Chinese-made passenger car tires, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Saturday.     The decision would not only help boost the steady development of bilateral trade ties, but also benefit the downstream businesses of India, the MOC said in a statement on its website.     China hoped to increase exchanges and cooperation on trade issues with the Indian government and encouraged dialogue and cooperation among industries for mutual benefit, it said.     The Directorate General of Safeguards under India's Ministry of Finance initiated a safeguard investigation on passenger car tire imports from China in May, according to the statement.     A safeguard duty, a temporary relief, usually takes the form of increased duties to higher than bound rate or standard rates or quantitative restrictions on imports.     According to Indian government statistics, from April to December last year, India imported 20 million U.S. dollars worth of tires involved in the case from China.

BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) - A Chinese official vows on Thursday to curb the country's production overcapacity and avoid repetitious construction of projects that are less environmental-friendly.     The move is part of the country's efforts to promote energy conservation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, Wan Bentai, chief engineer with the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), said on half of MEP minister Zhou Shengxian.     "Today's projects should never become the target of tomorrow's environment control program." He said in a speech delivered at the fifth China International Forum on Environment and Development.     The development and industrialization of green economy faces an important opportunity as the country has spent a large share of its 4 trillion yuan (586 billion U.S. dollar) stimulus package on energy conservation and greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects, he said.     He called for strengthened environment assessment measures on enterprises and optimizing the structure of key sectors such as the steel and auto industries.     The environmental problems brought about by China's sweeping urbanization, such as garbage and waste water disposal, should be seriously dealt with, he said, while stressing the importance of addressing issues in the rural areas such as water resources contamination, land pollution, garbage disposal and fertilization-caused pollution.     He also pledged that the government will intensify efforts in fostering creative and highly-efficient green technologies and encourage a green consumption model for both urban and rural dwellers.     A change to people's consumption habits, such as eating less meat, is conducive to environmental protection and greenhouse gas emission reduction, said Khalid Malik, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program in China, in the forum.     The fifth China International Forum on Environment and Development was co-hosted by the MEP and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). It was organized by the All-China Environment Federation.     The annual forum has been held for four years with the aim of creating a platform for international organizations and Chinese government agencies to discuss issues related to environmental protection. BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- State-run companies in China should stick to the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Vice President Xi Jinping said Monday.     Xi made the remarks at a meeting held here to promote Party building in China's state-run enterprises.     Party building lay at the core of the competitiveness of state-run enterprises, Xi said, adding that "the CPC's leadership over the enterprises should be upheld unswervingly... in order to help enterprises retain scientific development".     Li Yuanchao, head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, said at the meeting that bosses of the state-run companies headquartered in Beijing should increase the Party organs' involvement in the companies' decision-making process.     Party organs should participate in the process of the state-run companies' major decisions made by the companies' board meeting to ensure that they could play supervising functions, Li said.     Meanwhile, He Yong, deputy secretary of CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), urged the bosses of the country's state-run companies to be cleanhanded.     Restrictions and supervision over power should be intensified for the main leaders of the companies, He said, adding that the anti-corruption effort inside the state-run companies was an important part of the mechanism's construction.     The state-run companies' bosses should also enhance their discipline education and loyalty to the Party, the official said.     The anti-corruption effort in the state-run companies came after former chairman of Sinopec Chen Tonghai was sentenced to death last month with a two-year reprieve for taking huge bribes.     Chen took about 195.73 million yuan (28.66 million U.S. dollars) in bribes from 1999 to June 2007 by taking advantage of his positions in Sinopec, one of the country's major oil refiners.     Also present at Monday's meeting was Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, who stressed that the top priority of state-run enterprises at the moment was to maintain steady and relatively fast development.

CANBERRA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- An anti-China rant by an editor on Australia's biggest-selling national newspaper has come under fire from netizens around the world.     Greg Sheridan, an editor of The Australian, flattered Rebiya Kadeer -- leader of the separatist World Uygur Congress -- for her "courage" to confront the Chinese government in an article published Wednesday.     In his article, titled "Uygurs must fight for rights within China," Sheridan said Rebiya should leave aside her campaign for a separate state for a while and "concentrate instead on human rights, cultural autonomy and democracy," so as to win support and aid from Western nations.     He lauded Rebiya's week-long visit to Australia, saying it would "change the course of Chinese politics."     However, responding to Sheridan's instruction to the self-appointed Uygur leader, many netizens expressed their disagreement with his absurdities and scoffed at his ignorance and crankiness.     "Has anyone worked out of these facts about Kadeer?
