SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Saturday, Americans mourned the death of Congressman John Lewis after his battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.Lewis, a Democrat who represented Georgia's 5th Congressional district for 17 years, was part of the "Big Six" civil rights activists who organized the March on Washington in 1963.In San Diego, the civil rights icon is also remembered through two unique ties.RELATED: U.S. flags at half-staff in memory of Rep. John LewisA little more than a year ago, Lewis was donning protective gear to weld his initials into his namesake ship at a San Diego shipyard. On May 13, 2019, Lewis pulled welding gloves over his hands to fuse his initials into the keel plate of the USNS John Lewis at the General Dynamics Shipyard — the lead ship in a class of oiler vessels.Consistent with his commitment to non-violence, the ships will be non-combat vessels but play a vital role in refueling other ships at sea."For the U.S. Navy and former Secretary Ray Mabus to see fit to honor me in this way is unreal and almost unimaginable," Lewis said in a statement last year. "I only try to do what is fair, what is right, and what is just and get in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego State University resumed some in-person classes Monday, allowing several thousand students to come back to campus.Monday was the first time students were allowed at school since in-person classes were suspended in September due to the rising number of reported positive COVID-19 cases, both on and off campus.SDSU fine arts graduate student Naomi Chicoine has been taking classes almost entirely online this semester because of the outbreaks on and off campus.She said, "The hardest part is not knowing what's going to happen next. Are we going to be able to stay on campus or not?”The school has nearly 1,200 cases since school started in late August. At one point, the case numbers were high enough to put San Diego County at risk of being knocked out of the state of California’s red tier and into the stricter purple tier.Students are now being asked to do self-assessments and stay home if they're feeling sick.Before they go into a class, students get their temperature checked at one of two kiosks on campus. A device scans their temperature, then displays green or red, indicating if they are fever-free.Students get a wristband if they're cleared, which is date-stamped, and it allows them to go to class. The process takes less than a minute and saves professors from having to scan students themselves.Everyone coming onto campus for class -- students and staff -- is also required to get tested at least every 14 days.The school is also promising to strictly enforce mask and social distancing compliance. Classes are limited to mostly those required by students for graduation, around 3,000 students per week who will come to campus.The California State University system has also expanded SDSU's ability to enforce policies. They say they're issuing citations to students and staff who don't comply with the rules.Students could also face additional consequences, such as suspension or expulsion, according to a letter from the university president. 2000

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Seven people were displaced following a house fire in Mountain View early Saturday morning, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.The fire was reported just after 3:30 a.m. on Teak Street near Ocean View Boulevard. Crews quickly responded and were able to get the blaze under control. The home that burned sits on a lot with a second home in front, and the front house was not damaged.Family and residents of the front house said they believe the fire started from a washer/dryer unit. They also said that they had to pull bars off of a window to help people escape, with those outside pulling and those inside kicking on the bars. Four people were were hurt after climbing through the broken window.Crews say a total of seven people were displaced and the American Red Cross was called in to help, but family on scene said everyone is okay. They said the hardest part is realizing they lost everything, including Christmas presents that the two little girls who lived in the burned home had just unwrapped the day before.The family started a GoFundMe to raise money following the fire. 1112
