SAN DIEGO — A College Area nonprofit that is seeing record requests for its services may not survive the pandemic itself.Sharia's Closet provides free clothes to people who have an emergency need. Founder Shamine Linton said with the Coronavirus pandemic, the organization has already served more than 2,500 families in 2020, a record pace. "Due to unemployment, homelessness and domestic violence, our needs have grown," Linton said. Sharia's Closet, named for Linton's daughter, operates out of a former dental office near San Diego State University. It's divided into five rooms that are filled with clothes for children, teens, men and women - casual to professional. Linton said the organization gets connected to families through 54 social service organizations. While the demand is at an all-time high, the prospects of surviving past 2020 are not. "I don't think I'll have the money to continue for the next year," Linton said. Linton said the organization survives off community donations, but those have lagged in this economy. She has reduced hours for her staff of two, and the closet is now only open three days a week. The formerly manageable ,500 in monthly operating costs is now becoming daunting. "I'm hoping for financial donations to help keep our doors open, to help keep the service for the community that needs it the most," Linton said.Linton said Sharia's Closet has been able to receive public assistance for personal protective equipment, but not operations. She is planning a fundraiser in mid November. 1542

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Tony Gonsolin quieted San Diego’s bats for seven innings, Edwin Rios homered and the Los Angeles Dodgers won 3-1 to snap the Padres’ eight-game winning streak and regain a 2 ?-game lead in the NL West. The seven-time NL West champion Dodgers, being pushed by a Padres team that hasn’t been to the playoffs since winning the division in 2006, bounced back from a 7-2 loss in the opener of the series between the NL’s two best teams. The Padres, cruising toward a berth in the expanded playoffs, lost for just the third time in 15 games. 560

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The Navy says it will decommission a warship docked off San Diego after suspected arson caused extensive damage, making it too expensive to restore.Officials said Monday that fully repairing the USS Bonhomme Richard to warfighting capabilities would cost .5 billion to billion and take five to seven years. The amphibious assault ship burned for more than four days in July and was the Navy's worst U.S. warship fire outside of combat in recent memory. In a statement, Navy Secretary Kenneth J. Braithwaite said, “We did not come to this decision lightly. Following an extensive material assessment in which various courses of action were considered and evaluated, we came to the conclusion that it is not fiscally responsible to restore her. Although it saddens me that it is not cost effective to bring her back, I know this ship’s legacy will continue to live on through the brave men and women who fought so hard to save her, as well as the Sailors and Marines who served aboard her during her 22-year history."A senior defense official said in August that arson is suspected as the cause of fire and that a sailor was being questioned as a potential suspect.RELATED COVERAGE:-- Sources: Sailor under investigation for arson in USS Bonhomme Richard ship fire-- Arson expert: Investigation of USS Bonhomme Richard fire may take more than a year-- Regulators say smoke from ship fire not a health risk-- Navy Admiral meets, thanks sailors who put out ship fire-- Navy ship fire causing air quality problems in San Diego-- Two sailors who battled ship fire test positive for coronavirus-- Navy officials say all known fires aboard USS Bonhomme Richard are out-- PHOTOS: Fire erupts aboard Navy ship 1728

SAN DIEGO — It's a nerve-racking place: on stage, behind the mic, looking out at a sea of people waiting for your punch line. The Comedy Palace in San Diego sees many comedians but not like the one who performed Friday night."It was something I thought about even in college but lacked the courage to do it," said Michael Schmid. "I always loved to make people laugh."Schmid always had the passion, but it was a recent visit to the doctor that gave him the courage he had been lacking."If not now, when?" Schmid said.Three years ago, he was diagnosed with primary lateral sclerosis, a condition similar to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS."It had spread to my upper body and becoming more quadriplegic," Schmid said. One month ago, he made the toughest decision of his life."The most difficult thing I ever had to do in my life was to talk to my children about ending my life," he said.Schmid says he will end his life on December 27, citing severe pain. He shared the date with one of his favorite comedians, along with a dream and a request for help."My initial response was 'We're going to make this happen,' " said Lisa Alvarado.Alvarado talked with some friends in the industry to see if they'd help make Schmid's dream of performing come true."I'm talking comics with Netflix specials, Comedy Central specials," Alvarado said.In one month, the group developed a 15-minute standup comedy routine for Schmid to deliver Friday night. Many of the professional comedians were in the audience as Schmid performed in his wheelchair with Alvarado holding his microphone. After the performance, Schmid's father made his way to the stage to give his son a hug."I never expected him to do that and show the world we're close," said Schmid.Schmid's ex-wife and his four children were also in the audience."No matter how crappy of a hand he's been dealt, he's taken it with a joke," said Schmid's son Joshua.Schmid is grateful he had a chance to laugh."I want my friends and family to have at least that memory when I'm gone," Schmid said. "Do not just give up where you're at ... always strive and reach for something else.""Even if it is the end of your life," he said, "you can be more than you are right now." 2256
