Summer break is here for many kids across the country. While that means a break from class, for some students it means an end to the free and reduced school lunch they depend on during the school year. However, one Colorado community is making sure its children don’t go hungry this summer. “I feel good. I love it,” says Salina Sanchez. Sanchez operates a retired bus that was turned into a mobile café. Sanchez is part of the team at Aurora Public Schools bringing free lunches to where students are. “Just giving the free meal and at least knowing that they're eating, and that, that's what's good,” Sanchez says. Across the country, 1 in 6 children in America live in households without consistent access to an adequate amount of food. In the Aurora Public Schools district, roughly 70 percent of students receive free or reduced lunch. In the past, the school provided lunches at school cafeterias during the summer, but getting to the school was a challenge for many students. Therefore, school officials decided to transform buses going out of service into bright, mobile cafés. “Just create a spot where they could come see us…for free,” says Stacey Bennett with the Aurora Public Schools Nutrition Services. “Not have to go into a building and just be more visible and take the food to them. Now, three mobile cafés serve students lunch during the week at several locations. It’s free to all children, whether they are students in the district or not. “It is a small gesture, but it has a huge impact,” Bennett says. For Sanchez, seeing the reaction from the kids makes it all worth it. “I have like over 600 kids. I can say that they are mine, because I treat them all as if they were mine,” Sanchez says. 1729

STATEN ISLAND — A Staten Island City Councilmember is leading the push for the borough to secede.Joe Borelli (R), who represents the 51st District and lives on Staten Island, will be introducing two proposals to form a committee and to begin a study to look at secession.Staten Islanders have long felt like they are the “forgotten borough.”Of the 51 member city council, Staten Island only has three, Borelli one of the three. Residents said they have mixed feelings about the matter.“It’s been a staple of the five boroughs,” said Tariq Harmon, a 27-year-resident of Staten Island “It has to be five boroughs other than that it wouldn’t be New York City, you losing everything.”“It’s kind of tough, we’re always fending for our own I feel like we’re always the last borough to get support,” said Annette Lyudin.Lyudin and her husband, Alex, are raising a family on the Island, where they’ve lived for the past four years, after moving from Brooklyn.“It’s quiet, safe, great schools, great restaurants, it’s a relaxing place to live,” said Alex Lyudin.Of course as any New Yorker knows, this is not the first time there has been talk of secession. The last time it gained traction was 30 years ago in 1989.In a 1990 referendum, more than 80 percent of Staten Islanders voted to begin the secession process.Then on Election Day in November 1993, 65% of Staten Islanders voted by ballot in favor of becoming an independent city.But a vote never made it to the state level, many blaming then New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver for refusing to put it to a vote at the state level.As it did back then, questions now arise such as Will the borough survive financially on its own? SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Vice President Mike Pence says 21 people aboard a mammoth cruise ship off the California coast have tested positive for the new coronavirus, including 19 crew members. Pence said Friday that the federal government is working with California officials on a plan to bring the 951-foot Grand Princess to a non-commercial port this weekend. The 3,500 passengers and crew members will be tested for the virus. Friday's test results come amid evidence the vessel was the breeding ground for a deadly cluster of at least 10 cases during its previous voyage.The ship off California was returning to San Francisco after visiting Hawaii. Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday that the ship won’t come to shore until the passengers are appropriately assessed. The ship is owned by Princess Cruises, which also owns the Diamond Princess, the ship that was quarantined for two weeks in Yokohama, Japan, last month because of the virus. In the end, about 700 of the 3,700 people aboard became infected. Meanwhile, the death toll from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus, has risen to 14, with all but one victim in Washington state. The other was in California.Pennsylvania, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kentucky and Oklahoma all reported their first cases Friday.Also on Friday, President Donald Trump signed a .3 billion funding bill to help public health agencies address the crisis.
