NEW YORK (AP) — Gap Inc. is moving away from the nation's malls. The San Francisco-based brand was for decades a fixture at shopping malls around the country. Now it says it's closing 220 stores by early 2024. Back in August, the company announced its plans to close 225 stores globally. The parent company is also shuttering 130 Banana Republic stores. The moves announced Thursday are part of a three-year plan that will see Gap focus on outlets and its e-commerce business. Gap joins other clothing retailers in trying to reinvent themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outbreak forced many non-essential stores to temporarily close in the spring and early summer. On Tuesday, the San Francisco-based company said they are "exploring is the possible closure of our company-operated Gap stores in the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, and Italy at the end of the second quarter in 2021."Gap Inc plans to shut down more Gap and Banana Republic stores amid the pandemic.By 2024, the company plans to close 350 mall locations in North America. 1053

NEWWARK, N.J. – OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma has pleaded guilty to three criminal charges and formally admitted its role in the opioid crisis.Tuesday's plea before a judge in Newark, New Jersey, is part of a larger settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice that also includes resolving civil claims. The Stamford, Connecticut-based company is to pay 5 million as part of the deal, while billion in forfeitures and penalties could be waived because of a proposed deal to resolve thousands of other lawsuits.Advocates are upset that the guilty plea applies only to the company and not executives or members of the Sackler family who own it.During Tuesday’s hearing, Purdue Pharma admitted to impeding the US. Drug Enforcement’s efforts to combat the addiction crisis and acknowledged it paid doctors to induce them to write more prescriptions for its painkillers.More than 750,000 people have died from drug overdoses since 1999, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).The CDC says two out of three overdose deaths in 2018 involved opioid, which are substances that work in the nervous system of the body or in specific receptors in the brain to reduce the intensity of pain.Since 1999, the CDC says overdose deaths involving opioid like prescription drugs and heroin have increased six times. 1337

NEW YORK CITY — Police say they have arrested a man after he allegedly pushed a woman onto subway tracks as a train was arriving at the Union Square station Thursday morning. The NYPD said a call came in just before 8:30 a.m. local time after a woman was shoved off the subway platform and onto the tracks of the No. 4, 5 and 6 subway lines.Surveillance video shows the suspect waiting and then suddenly push the woman, 40, onto the tracks in front of the oncoming train. The FDNY rushed to the scene and helped the victim off the tracks, while a New York City Transit platform controller subdued the suspect, holding him down until police arrived, authorities said. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital and only suffered minor injuries, authorities said.NYPD Chief of Transit Kathleen O'Reilly said on Twitter that "charges are forthcoming and this case will be prosecuted to the fullest extent."The incident caused delays and service impacts along the No. 4? and ?5? train lines, the MTA said. 1004

NEW YORK — Indoor dining in New York City will close beginning Monday amid the rising spread of COVID-19 increased hospitalizations linked to the virus, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday.“We said that we would watch it if the hospitalization rate didn’t stabilize, we would close indoor dining. It is not,” Cuomo said.Outdoor dining and takeout will continue, he added. The increasing rate of transmission has been a problem, especially in densely populated areas, Cuomo said. The governor added that the state will monitor indoor dining data in areas outside of New York City and orange zones. Adjustments will be made next week if needed. When asked about a timeline on reopening the city's indoor dining, Cuomo's team said the state will be looking over cases and hospitalizations over the next two weeks.Earlier this week, Cuomo said any region with an unstable hospitalization rate for more than five days would see new restrictions on indoor dining. He said New York City would see a full closure on indoor dining while regions outside of the city would see a reduction to 25% capacity. Amid the announcement of closing indoor dining, Cuomo called on the federal government to provide restaurants and bars with relief in the next stimulus package. The state will do what it can to assist these businesses, including extending the commercial eviction moratorium, Cuomo said.“So, if a business can’t pay rent because of this situation, they won’t be evicted,” he said. The adjustments restaurants have made are "remarkable," Cuomo added. Heat lamps and partial enclosures are working, according to the governor, but he hopes that indoor dining closures will only be for a short period of time."I understand they're going to sustain economic damage, and I think the federal government should reimburse them for it. If the state is in a position to reimburse them for it, we will," he said. Restrictions on gyms and salons appear to be working and are not as much of a problem, so those businesses will be allowed to operate in orange zones with increased testing and regulations, Cuomo said.Capacity will be reduced to 25% and weekly testing will be mandated if in an orange zone. This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom and Kristine Garcia on WPIX in New York City. 2290
