NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) — A nursing student's trip to a Starbucks in National City turned into an knock-down struggle and dramatic chase in pursuit of her laptop.With three finals next week, nursing student Jacqueline Ang spent the Friday using a computer at a library Bonita. "Grateful for the resource, but it's not the same," said Ang, who is wrapping up her first year in the nursing program at Southwestern College.It's not the same, because it doesn't have what she really needs: a year of notes. "It's devastating," said Ang.On Monday afternoon, she was studying with her MacBook Pro at a busy Starbucks on E. Plaza Boulevard. "Both earphones are in listening to lectures. One hand on my laptop, and the other hand taking notes," said Ang.Ang says she was at a table near the middle of the Starbucks when an older black teen in a hoodie walked in, and right up to her. He unplugged her earphones and turned to her computer. "Grabs it by the screen, closes it and starts running," said Ang.As the man ran off, Ang screamed to get someone's attention. She then took off after him. "When he's at the door, I'm able to grab him by the hoodie and bring him down. I'm saying, 'Please don't take it. Please don't take it,'" said Ang.On the ground, a struggle unfolded. Ang weighs just over 100 pounds."It's all that's on my mind. 'Omigod, everything I worked hard for is on that thing. I need that. I need to fight for that,'" said Ang.At some point during the struggle, she says the man was able to hand it off to another young man in a hoodie. Ang chased the other man, who slipped into a van in the parking lot. She was close behind, opening a side door. "I see three or four people in the van. I was holding onto the handle, running with the car as they're moving," said Ang.A bystander's short video shows her being dragged, before she let go. The incident left her with a sprained wrist and no laptop, but one big clue. Because Ang made the thieves' plans go awry, a witness was able to get the license plate number.National City Police asked 10News not to release the license plate in order to not endanger the investigation. A spokesperson says they see a handful of similar crimes every year, but haven't linked the suspects to any other incidents.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help Ang purchase a new computer. 2344

More than half a million businesses received the federal funds the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). The program was created in March to help small business and their employees survive the financial impact of the pandemic. The program lent businesses money at a low-interest rate, with the potential for the loans to be forgiven or turned into a grant if the company retained and paid their workers for a given time.Watchdog groups, like U.S. PIRG, were among many groups and elected leaders that called for transparency with PPP. After initially resisting, in May, the U.S. Department of Treasury and the Small Business Administration announced they would release the names of all businesses that received a PPP loan in the amount of 0,000 or more.Earlier this month, that list was released. What has come to light is that millionaire, billionaires, and even some celebrities received the federal aid intended to help struggling small businesses. For example, rapper and fashion designer Kanye West, with an estimated net worth of .3 billion, received a PPP loan for his company Yeezy.“From the very outset, the public, watchdogs, and elected officials had a very good reason to want data to see where this money was going,” said R.J. Cross with U.S. PIRG. “As we just learned, we had good reason to be questioning is this program going to do what it was intended to do?”Cross is calling for the federal government to take steps to find out how much money went to small businesses and how much went to larger companies that may have had access to other sources of cash to get them through the financial hardship.“A big improvement on the program would be true audits on all of the loan amounts,” said Cross. “That, say, if we find that you could’ve probably gotten money somewhere else we are going to take those taxpayers dollars back.”Currently, only loans over million will be audited, but most of the loans taken out, including some by millionaires and billionaires, were just below that threshold.“We don’t have any proof to say that they picked that amount strategically, but it certainly raises questions,” Cross added.Watchdog groups say the only way to answer those questions for the American people is continued transparency and expanded audits.“Fraud and corruption are a real concern anytime the government is spending and giving money to companies, and especially, the pace in which it is happening right now,” Cross said. “There is reason to keep a very close eye on what is happening next. Millions of small, black cerith snails cover one area of Fort De Soto Beach, Florida, stunning wildlife lovers. The shellfish, known as cerith snails, cover nearly the entire length of the beach. Robert Neff snapped several pictures of the bizarre event. “I grew up in Florida and I’ve never seen anything like this. It was amazing to see,” he said.What makes this so odd is Cerith snails don’t typically wash up onto land. They’re usually along the bottom of the ocean in flat reefs or hiding in coral reefs where the temperature is warm. The snails are in an area off the south end of the parking lot at Fort DeSoto’s North beach, which borders the bird sanctuary. Neff said the low tide exposed the snails over the weekend, and many are still at the beach. His photographs, along with video taken by Mark Freels of See Through Adventures, have been widely shared across social media. One former research assistant from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center said it's possible the snails came to the shallow waters because they found food, which was washed up by recent hurricanes, on the beach. Freels said it was a very strange and magnificent sight.“My job is to take people on kayak adventures and you never know what you’ll find.
