SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The San Diego chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is celebrating 65 years of their Leadership AKAdemy. The program mentors a group of teenage girls every year. The AKAdemy ends with a memorable ball. The AKA San Diego chapter has one mission: encourage scholastic achievement, strong ethical standards, and "be a service to all mankind." For over six decades, those values have been used to mentor girls around the county. During the 1950s, the chapter held its first debutante ball to expose young girls to cultural opportunities. It was historically the debut of young ladies ages 16 to 19 as official members of society. "Now it has grown into a leadership academy to where we equip the young people with life skills," says Chapter President, Deborah Davis-Gillespie. The teens attend different workshops, like college readiness and etiquette, each week for the months' long program. This year's Leadership AKAdemy has a total of 16 girls. "I'm just really happy to be a part of the whole process and the whole experience," says participant Kennedy Harris. Community service is also at the top of the list for the program. The girls participate in community events like the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and the MLK Day of Service in Balboa Park. The goal is to help others and for the girls to have an appreciation for the communities in which they live. "It's really nice to be able to make those connections early on in my life," says participant Sanai Mitchell. After months of workshops, events, and dance practice with their escorts for the ball, the girls are now just a few weeks away from their big night. They will be presented to their families and community as young women, ready to take on the world. "It's an evolution, its life-changing and they walk away a better person than when they came in," says Davis- Gillespie.This year's AKA Leadership AKAdemy will be held on Saturday, March 21st at the Legacy Hotel and Resort in Mission Valley. 2000

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Ballots will arrive in the mail for more people than ever in this election, but many Americans have relied on this method to vote for decades.Military families, people with disabilities, and Americans living overseas make up some of the demographics familiar with the process.“I haven’t been to a voting place since 1986," said Tori Zwisler. While she hasn't waited in a polling line for over three decades, she hasn't missed an election."Living outside of America doesn’t mean you’re not American, it doesn't mean you don’t care about the issues, and it certainly doesn’t mean that you don’t have an opinion about who you want to lead your country," said Zwisler.Now back in the states, she still exercises her constitutional right via the U.S. Postal Service.“I honestly prefer the luxury of voting at home because I can look online, and I can check the websites of what both party's opinions are of the initiatives or of the candidate's backgrounds," said Zwisler.In states like California, Oregon and Colorado, voters have had this option for many years.According to a Pew Research Center analysis, the share of voters casting a ballot by mail has been growing steadily over the years, increasing nearly threefold between 1996 and 2016, from 7.8% to nearly 21%.But while states like Oregon and Washington conduct their elections almost entirely by mail, other states have seen relatively few mail ballots, the analysis goes on to explain.“I think everyone has to weigh in on what’s happening right now, it’s critical," said Zwisler.As the pandemic reshapes how we vote in this election, Zwisler believes the changes could actually strengthen our democracy, making voting easier and convenient for more Americans. 1868

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The DMV is apologizing for long wait times as they work through a new queuing system and problems with the REAL ID.Wait times (without an appointment) used to be under two hours, now they're closer to 4-5 hours. The DMV issued this statement to 10News:The issue is employees have to manually enter the ID number given to each customer, since a new system went online two weeks ago. The ID number consists of your initials and the last four digits of your phone number.The process prior was completely automatic.The other issue relates to the REAL ID. Employees are taking more time to explain to customers what they need to have in order to get the ID. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- This Christmas local chefs and volunteers gave the gift of gourmet meals for those in need. It was a two day process. “Just Call Us” Volunteers prepared the food, from scratch, before serving it to the homeless. The volunteers made enough to feed over 400 people. Early this afternoon, the chefs and volunteers delivered the food to three different shelters. The largest being the Alpha Project tent, in Downtown. “We all appreciate it. They all deserve a good meal,” says a staff member with the Alpha Project. Over a dozen volunteers donated their time at the Alpha Project. More volunteers visited Rachel’s Women’s Shelter and San Diego Center for Children. All of the items are donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Market.
