EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — A family jewelry shop in El Cajon is out tens of thousands of dollars after a brazen robbery Friday.A couple entered Ishtar Jewelry Store on Avocado Avenue and began browsing around. It was a seemingly ordinary evening."They were looking for different pieces of jewelry, bracelets, necklaces," said Nadin Toma, the store owner's daughter. "My mom was the one who was helping them out. The female found a piece that she liked."After that, Toma said the woman claimed she needed to get her wallet from the car to purchase the piece of jewelry."Our door to get in is an electric door," explained Toma. "We have to buzz anyone in and out just for security purposes."So, the woman was buzzed out, but Toma said she held the door open. That's when the man by her side made his move, jumping over the display counter, snatching up a handful of gold chains, then running out of the wide-open front door."They just grabbed and ran as fast as they could," Toma said. "They got away."Toma estimates the cost of the gold chains were anywhere from ,000 to ,000.But, the thief also left something behind. His fanny pack hooked onto the front door and broke off his body as he ran away.Toma said inside the fanny pack was the suspect's identification card, which she gave to police. She also said a Good Samaritan wrote down the license plate number of the car the couple used to get away."With any robbery, it's very painful for anyone who goes through it," said Toma. "Unfortunately, it happened to us."Toma is hoping the ID card and the license plate number will help police track down the suspect.El Cajon Police is actively investigating. 1666

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced late Friday that the US government will extend a federal student loan forbearance on borrowers for an additional month as more businesses are closing due to a surge in coronavirus cases. This means that payments of federal student loans will not be due in January. The decision does not impact private student loans, which have generally still required repayment by Americans during the pandemic. While the federal student loan forbearance is scheduled to end on January 31, President-elect Joe Biden has discussed taking more permanent action on reducing the student loan burden on millions of Americans.Federal student loans were placed on forbearance in March. In August, President Donald Trump directed DeVos to extend the forbearance through the end of 2020. While those who wanted to continue making student loan payments were able to continue doing so, automatic payments of federal student loans stopped early in the pandemic as unemployment levels jumped to record levels.Amid the forbearance period, the federal government was not charging interest on borrowers."The coronavirus pandemic has presented challenges for many students and borrowers, and this temporary pause in payments will help those who have been impacted," said DeVos. "The added time also allows Congress to do its job and determine what measures it believes are necessary and appropriate. The Congress, not the Executive Branch, is in charge of student loan policy." 1493

Dr. Biden earned her degrees through hard work and pure grit. She is an inspiration to me, to her students, and to Americans across this country. This story would never have been written about a man. pic.twitter.com/mverJiOsxC— Doug Emhoff (@DouglasEmhoff) December 12, 2020 289

During Tuesday’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing, Sen. Lindsey Graham said “good old days of segregation” in a question to nominee Amy Comey Barrett when discussing a landmark 1954 high court ruling. On Wednesday, Graham claimed the comment was made in sarcasm."If anybody was listening to who I am and what I said, you know that it was the deep sarcasm that I suggested that some legislative body would want to yearn for the good old days of segregation,” Graham said on Wednesday. “The point that I'm trying to make is there is nobody in America in the legislative arena, wanting to take us back to that dark period in American history.”During Tuesday’s questioning, Graham asked, "And one of the reasons you can say with confidence that you think Brown versus Board of Education is super precedent is that you’re not aware of any effort to go back to the good old days of segregation by a legislative body, is that correct?"Graham is an unexpectedly tight race against Democrat Jamie Harrison for his seat in South Carolina. Harrison fired back at the senator.“Lindsay Graham just called segregation ‘the good old days,’” Harrison tweeted. “The good old days for who, Senator? It’s 2020, not 1920. Act like it.”Graham responded directly to Harrison’s quip.“And for my opponent to suggest that says far more about him than me,” Graham said. “I've been a United States Senator for three terms. I represent a state with 31% of an African American population. I want to make sure that everybody in my state moves forward. And in terms of that statement it is a it blows my mind that any rational person can believe that about me.”Recent polls compiled by 538 show an essentially deadlocked race between Graham and Harrison. The landmark 9-0 Brown versus Board of Education decision ruled that segregation of schools violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th amendment. 1883

During a media event celebrating his administration's effort in rolling back regulations, President Donald Trump's rhetoric veered into the 2020 race, bashing presumptive opponent Joe Biden and protesters calling for police reform and an end to systemic racism.Trump began his speech by claiming that his administration had eliminated eight government regulations for every new regulation implemented, fulfilling a 2016 campaign promise. He said deregulation helped the U.S.'s response to the coronavirus, allowing for the creation of personal protective equipment and ventilators. He also claimed that his slashing of environmental regulations has allowed the agency to return to its "core mission."Later, Trump's speech moved from White House event into a campaign-style speech, hitting Biden for signing a coalition agreement with Bernie Sanders that includes climate change and social justice reforms.Trump also made the claim that protesters who have been calling for the removal of statues of Americans with racist pasts want to "destroy our country" — harkening back to a speech that he made at Mt. Rushmore on July 3.Trump's event comes as new polling shows that the president continues to trail behind presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Trump demoted his campaign manager, Brad Parscale, on Wednesday evening. The event also comes as deaths linked to the novel coronavirus near the 140,000 mark in the U.S. Several states have paused reopening efforts, and several major retailers will soon require masks in stores to help prevent the spread of the virus.Watch Trump's speech in the live video below. 1635
