The co-founders of Lloyd Taco Truck held a news conference Monday morning to address the recent controversy surrounding one truck serving lunch at the ICE detention center in Batavia, New York.On Friday, the Lloyd account posted on social media after serving lunch at a federal detention facility in Batavia that includes offices for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The post explained that the company thought that business decision was a "poor choice," and that it was not proud of serving lunch at the facility because Lloyd has close ties to immigration services throughout Western New York. The post was picked up quickly on social media, and generated thousands of responses. On Monday, owners Pete Cimino and Chris Dorsaneo addressed the controversy outside Lloyd Taco Factory on Hertel Avenue. 823

The impeachment process is one that isn’t used very often, but it’s been around since the birth of the U.S. Constitution.“It was an idea as a check on the abuse of political power,” said Norman Provizer, a professor of political science at Metropolitan State University of Denver. He said impeachment is like an indictment. It doesn't mean the president is automatically booted out of office. When a simple majority of the House of Representatives votes to impeach, the next step is a trial in the Senate. The president can then be removed from office by a two-thirds vote in the senate.Only three U.S. presidents ever have been impeached: Presidents Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton and Donald Trump. Johnson and Clinton both managed to finish their terms in office. President Richard Nixon actually resigned before the House of Representatives could pass the impeachment articles against him.“Andrew Johnson, one of the charges against him was he didn’t follow an act passed by Congress. And that is illegal, you can’t do that,” Provizer said.Provizer said there was a lot of disagreement between Johnson and Congress during his term in the 1860s. Clinton’s impeachment more than a century later had little to do with Congress. “I did not have sexual relations with that woman," Clinton said at a White House press conference in 1998.Turns out Clinton did have an affair with a White House intern, despite denying it during testimony.“There is a thing about perjury — lying under oath. All of it’s surrounding sexual activities, if you will,” Provizer said.Impeachment isn’t only for presidents. In fact, Provizer said it’s mainly used to try and potentially remove federal judges.“It says in the constitution the president, the vice president and other civil officers," the professor said.Provizer said presidential impeachments are often most noteworthy because they come with dramatic storylines. He says people start to draw connections between different impeachment proceedings. For example, the partisan divide we’re facing now was seen during Nixon’s administration.“It looks like the Republicans are defending him, and the Democrats are going after him. I mean, that’s how it’s viewed — very partisan. But as it unfolds and more information comes out, basically, many Republicans drop their effort to defend him.”As of now, most of the Republican party has remained loyal to Trump. In the end, Provizer said all impeachment proceedings have been fundamentally the same. They simply deal with different subject matter.“If you give a government power, what do you also have to be concerned with? The ability to check that power," Provizer said. "You need both. Otherwise you have authoritarian rule."  2722

The Justice Department says it will not oppose probation for former Trump administration national security adviser Michael Flynn. It's a more lenient stance than prosecutors took earlier this month, when they said he deserved prison time. The latest sentencing filing still seeks a sentence of up six months. But unlike before, prosecutors explicitly state that probation would be a “reasonable" punishment and that they would not oppose it.It was not clear why the Justice Department appeared to soften its position, though prosecutors did suggest Flynn deserves credit for his decades-long military service. 622

The Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is charged with caring for unaccompanied migrant children, is "scaling back" or canceling activities at shelters, citing the need for more resources.A swell of migrants crossing the southern border has overwhelmed the agency's facilities, which house unaccompanied children until they are placed with a sponsor in the United States. The shelters provide schooling and activities for the children during their stay, but the increase of children arriving to the border has strained the department's resources."This week, ORR instructed grantees to begin scaling back or discontinuing awards for (unaccompanied minors) activities that are not directly necessary for the protection of life and safety, including education services, legal services, and recreation," Evelyn Stauffer, spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, said in a statement. The Washington Post 975

The ads are appealing. They feature deals for vets to refinance their homes and cash out on the equity. However, home and refinance loan programs targeted towards military veterans can be a benefit or a headache, depending on the lender. John Bell, advisor for the Veterans Affairs Administration in D.C. says there are many reasons why vets can take advantage of borrowing cash against their home. But how you choose a cash-out lender makes a big difference. “We want to make sure that veterans are armed with information from the disclosure process early in the process as well as though closing, so they understand the decisions they're making,” he says. Bell says, unfortunately, there are predatory lenders out there targeting vets, sticking vets with thousands of dollars in hidden fees. “Have we seen it, yes,” Bell explains. “Do we know how to combat it and help you in navigating that process? Without a doubt.” In 2018, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs stepped up its regulations for lenders, specifically on cash-out refinance loans. The VA has always offered advisor services to protect borrowers through their long-standing VA home loan program. “We need to make sure that all lenders are operating on the same playing field, that they're all giving veterans the transparency that they need to make informed decisions,” Bell says. According to a report by the American Enterprise Institute, in September of 2018, veterans cashed in on cash-outs. They accounted for 86 percent of mortgage loans, which was up about 30 percent from two years prior. “The general rule is if it sounds too good to be true it usually is,” Bell says. Bell says in order to not cause a mortgage crisis among vets, it's best if you know what you’re getting yourself into. “Be sure you're asking the right questions,” he says. “You want to know the exchange of equity that you're going to take out, what is the overall cost of that, and make an informed decision.” 1983
