DENVER — Christmas gifts may not arrive in time as U.S. Postal Service offices struggle to keep up with delivery demands.James Boxrud, a USPS spokesperson based in Colorado, said they're experiencing historical mail volume.“This week is our busiest week, of our busiest month, of our busiest year ever,” Boxrud said. “We are seeing so many packages.”Millions of Americans turned to online shopping during the pandemic for everyday necessities and again for holiday shopping.“It’s like the perfect storm,” Boxrud said.USPS is overwhelmed as people experience long delays and deliveries past the promised window on priority shipping.Stephanie Turner, a teacher and business owner, said with family gatherings canceled, her package list got a little longer this year.“We would normally ship three or four boxes of gifts, and this year we are shipping five because of people we are not seeing,” Turner said. “If everybody is shipping a little bit more, it’s going to be overwhelming.”She mailed her gifts right after Thanksgiving and said they all arrived, but it’s her business she’s worried about. Turner sells custom jackets and tops on her website and Poshmark.“Right now, I have items that I mailed on Dec. 1 that still haven’t arrived, so that’s three weeks,” Turner said. “I feel really bad for my customers, but there is not much I can do.”The shipping delays tie up money — she doesn’t get paid until the package arrives.The Washington Post reported nearly 19,000 of the agency’s 644,000 workers are under quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19. They also found that mail performance plummeted and only 75% of first-class mail, like letters and bills, arrived during the promised window on the week of Dec. 5. Mail service scored 95% last year during the same time period.“We are flexing our resources,” Boxrud said.“We are borrowing people from areas of Colorado, bringing them to an area that needs some help just to try to keep up with that flow.”On Monday, USPS delivered 971,000 packages in Colorado and Wyoming, according to Boxrud.Private express carriers also stopped serving some businesses, which pushed more shipments through USPS adding to an already strained agency, the Washington Post reported.Turner is encouraging people to print out photos of gifts that haven’t arrived and wrap them up. She said she read the tip online. “Just be patient — it’s going to come,” Tuner said.Some Coloradans believe that while it’s frustrating, they understand postal workers are doing their best under the circumstances.“I feel bad for those guys,” Turner said.Many postal workers are working overtime and will work into Christmas Eve to deliver packages. DENVER (AP) — A black bear broke into a Colorado house over the weekend and left by breaking through a wall "like the Kool-Aid Man."Estes Park police say the break-in occurred Friday night and that the animal was likely attracted to trash.A Facebook post by the police department said: "Upon officer's arrival, said bear forcibly breached a hole in the wall like the 'Kool-Aid Man' and made its escape."The Denver Post reports no one was injured.Colorado Parks and Wildlife said bears entered over 35 vehicles and nine residences in the Estes Park area in the 10 days before Aug. 3. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- Train traffic in Del Mar was stopped Wednesday, after a cliff collapse near 11th Street. It was a beautiful afternoon for sun and surf until the earth came tumbling down. Del Mar resident, Ingrid Hoffmeister has seen it for years - the cliffs in front of her home, slowly disappearing.“We all know it’s happening, so it’s not a surprise," Hoffmeister said. “It’s getting closer and closer to the path of where you’re walking.”Around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, plumes of dust filled the air, as enormous chunks of the Del Mar cliffs came crumbling down onto the beach. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — Del Mar Fairgrounds and city officials met Tuesday to devise a traffic plan with one of the main arteries to the venue closed.Northbound Jimmy Durante Boulevard has been blocked off since a bluff collapse in late April.The road won't reopen until at least June 4, but the county fair opens May 31. "People are going to start going back through the neighborhood, or you're just going to sit in line," said Del Mar resident Jim Murff. Del Mar City Manager Scott Huth said plans include increased signage to instruct fairgoers to stay on Interstate 5 to the Via de la Valle exit. He said the city would also hire "flaggers" to direct drivers past the stop signs in its beachfront neighborhood, north to Via de la Valle. "Even with the flaggers that delay is not going to be as efficient as getting off (the freeway) at Via de la Valle," Huth said. Annie Pierce, a spokeswoman for the fairgrounds, said the fair would operate at least three days while northbound Jimmy Durante Boulevard is closed. DENVER, Colo. -- President Trump recently approved changes to the Paycheck Protection Program to give small business owners more opportunities to qualify for loan forgiveness. Some owners say even with the changes, it’s still a long process to get their PPP loan forgiven.Gail Lindley is the 3rd generation in her family to run the Denver Bookbinding Company. “It’s more than a business, it’s truly our life blood,” Lindley said.The 91-year-old company received a Paycheck Protection Program loan that helped Lindley keep the lights on and employees working on the limited orders coming in.Now, Lindley is worried about the extensive requirements to make sure her loan is forgiven.“The bank told us, ‘You really need to document well,’” said Lindley.The PPP loan forgiveness application is 11 pages long and requires companies to document all spending on payroll, rent and utilities. Changes to the act were signed into law by President Trump on June 5. Companies must still prove they’ve retained workers and kept wages the same to earn full loan forgiveness.Consumer Bankers Association CEO, Richard Hunt, said documenting this is an unnecessary burden for small business owners.“Right now, small businesses across the country are spending about ,000 more more and 15 more hours submitting another application packet,” said Hunt. “We’re saying, just forgive all the loans under 0,000,” he said.Lindley believes automatic forgiveness would help people get back to work more quickly. “There’s only so many hours in a day, and I want to spend it working on my business not filling out forms,” she said.The Small Business Administration is requiring the most documentation for businesses who want full forgiveness. With the changes President Trump approved, businesses have 24 weeks instead of just eight weeks to use the funding—and only 60% of the loan needs to be used for payroll instead of the original 75%.“We can make that money last a little bit longer and be more thoughtful on how that’s doled out,” said Lindley.These changes are helping many, but Hunt said more needs to be done to lift time-consuming burdens off small businesses just getting back to work.“0,000 or less constitutes 85% of all loans, but only 20% of all the funding, so those larger businesses would still have to submit a forgiveness process, but not the mom and pop shops who are still in the red right now trying to make ends meet,” he said.For Lindley, she’s just hoping all the bookkeeping she’s done will be enough to keep her family’s story alive. 2548
