A highly specialized group of employees at public utility plants who have jobs that are impossible to do at home are some of these workers. Some workers at the Claude "Bud" Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant are going above and beyond to make sure our drinking water is safe from the coronavirus. When we think of heroes during this coronavirus pandemic, we immediately think of medical staff, grocery workers, and delivery people. But remember to thank those who continue to provide water. "The plant cannot run without these operators," Jessica Jones, communications director at the desalination plant said. They have been living at the Carlsbad Desalination Plant since last Thursday. For 21 days, they will be on 12-hour shifts and sleeping in their RV's parked inside the facility."Being completely locked down is the only way we can ensure that these operators remain healthy," Jones said.Having no human contact with the outside world, these quarantined employees will get food delivered to them at the gate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For his 97th birthday one of Ed Stankowski's sons asked if he'd like to visit the USS Midway. The WWII veteran was on the ship for her maiden voyage in 1945. “He shot him down initially and says no I can’t go, you know I can't do that, he says, how am I going to get around?" said Paul Stankowski, another one of Ed's sons. “By 7 o' clock the next morning he was calling my brother up and says, hey when can we go!”Surrounded by four generations, Ed traveled from Wisconsin to San Diego. He got a private tour of the ship and told stories along the way. “Ha! My first night at sea I was seasick like a dog!" remembers Ed.One of the first stops on the tour was visiting the area he once worked in. “I was a Radioman, I was teaching the new recruits the radio code, international Morse code, and the procedure that they use for communicating," said Ed. Ed says he enjoyed his time in the Navy and that being back on the ship brought back memories. “I was very happy to get on a ship like that. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds attended a Juneteenth event in Balboa Park Friday.The event, 'Artists 4 Black Lives,' involved local artists commemorating Juneteenth through songs and performances."It was a way to celebrate Juneteenth, mourn our fallen black brothers and sisters, and amplify our black artists' voices," The event director, Eboni Muse, said.The holiday commemorates the day in 1865 when slaves in Texas learned they were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued."As black people, it is our Independence Day. We were not freed July 4," Muse said. "I personally think it's something we need to celebrate all the time."This year's Juneteenth celebration takes place at a time when the country is engaged in a national conversation about racial injustice and police reform.
