BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- A 40-member Chinese medical care and epidemic prevention team left here for Haiti on Sunday afternoon on a chartered flight, which also carried 20 tonnes of medical supplies, said the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).The MOC said earlier in the day that China had decided to provide medical supplies worth 18 million yuan (2.64 million U.S. dollars) in additional aid to quake-ravaged Haiti.The 20-tonne medical supplies included medicines, hygiene equipment, medical devices and camping equipment, said the ministry in a statement.Also onboard the plane would be four Chinese peace-keeping police officers, replacing the four who were killed in the earthquake. SHANGHAI, March 23 (Xinhua) -- There has been no timetable for the construction of a maglev line project between Hangzhou and Shanghai, a spokesman of the Shanghai municipal government said Monday.The project is still undergoing feasibility studies, the official said when responding to media reports last week which said the construction is expected to start this year.The proposal of the ultra-high-speed maglev line, with an estimated cost of 22 billion yuan (3.22 billion U.S. dollars), was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in 2006.When completed, the line is expected to cut the travel time between Shanghai and Hangzhou, capital of the neighboring Zhejiang Province, to half an hour from the current 2.5 hours.

BEIJING, March 23 (Xinhua) -- China's year-on-year inflation rate was expected to be between 2 to 2.5 percent for the first quarter this year, the country's top economic planner said here Tuesday.The consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, would see a "moderate increase" in the first quarter, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a statement on its website.China's CPI rose 2.7 percent from a year earlier in February, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.Food prices would begin to fall as the weather got warmer, said the statement. In February, food prices rose 6.2 percent from the previous year due to the Lunar New Year holiday and poor weather.The Lunar New Year holiday, or Spring Festival, is the most important traditional festival in China for family reunion. People usually spend a lot on food, alcohol, cigarettes and gifts during the period.The February CPI was within normal range, compared with the Spring Festival months in previous years, said Zhou Wangjun, deputy director of the Department of Prices of the NDRC.However, Zhou warned that there were still uncertainties in the price trend, including fluctuation in international commodities prices.China targets a consumer price rise of around 3 percent this year, according to a government work report delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao at the opening of the annual session of the National People's Congress earlier this month.

SHANGHAI, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese bankcard holders' consumer confidence in January was up year on year, according to an index issued jointly by China Unionpay and Xinhua News Agency on Tuesday.The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index (BCCI) stood at 86.81 in January, 2.44 points higher from the same period last year, and stayed at basically the same level as December 2009, said the index report.The increasing consumer confidence mainly stemmed from China's steadily improving macroeconomic conditions, the report said.China's economy resumed a double-digital growth in the fourth quarter last year, pushing the annual figure beyond the government target of 8 percent at 8.7 percent.The index also resulted from an increase of 9.1 million urban jobs and a higher-than-8-percent income rise for urban and rural residents in 2009, according to the report.The report also attributed the rising confidence to people's growing demand during the New Year and the approaching Spring Festival, the Chinese lunar new year, which falls on Feb. 14 this year.The report said China Unionpay would release the BCCI index on a monthly basis starting 2010.
