Atlanta 1979 was the start of a series of murders that terrorized the city for two years. Nearly 30 African Americans, mostly children and some as young as 9, were found murdered around the city. Catherine Leach-Bell's son, 13-year-old Curtis, was one of the victims in a string of murders between 1979 and 1981. “It hurt because we loved our children, and it really hurt,” she says. Atlanta's mayor, Keisha Bottoms, announced investigators are going to examine old evidence, using new technology to see if they can learn more about the murder cases. Many of them remain unsolved. “I want some closure. I want justice. I want to know who killed Curtis,” says his mother. “His case is still sitting on the shelf getting dusty and rusty.” A jury found Wayne Williams guilty for the murder of two adults. After his conviction, police blamed Williams for being responsible for most of the child murders, but he was never officially charged for those crimes. Williams has maintained his innocence, and some question whether he is responsible for all of the murders. Mayor Bottoms' announcement comes just days before Investigation Discovery's three-hour documentary series about the case, which airs tomorrow. “We'd like to think that the buzz around the film may have had something to do with her decision, but most important is the fact these victims who have so long looking to be heard seem to finally have been heard,” says Pamela Deutsch, an executive producer for the show.Investigators admit they don't know what they'll find and if it will change anything, but they say they owe it to the families to try to use new technology to find any possible new leads. 1675
Cheese Importers is a business that will directly feel the impacts of the cheese tariffs recently imposed on the European Union. “We started in 1976 out of our family home with six packs of cheeses from Wisconsin,” Cheese Importers Co-Owner Clara White said. From olives and pastries to European home goods, its main attraction is in the name. Cheese Importers offers a selection of 350 imported cheeses – most of them are from Europe. “Countries like Italy, Portugal, Spain, France,” said Sascha Stanger, the Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Purchasing at Cheese Importers. It’s a popular spot for cheese lovers. However, prices are about to go up as cheeses of all types and flavors because the European Union has just been hit with an import tariff. "Really, it is impacting people negatively,” White said. White and Stanger say certain cheese prices are subject to a potential 25% increase. “[Cheeses like] Parmesan-Reggiano from Italy, Grana Padano from Italy, Buffalo Mozzarella from Italy,” Stanger said. “One of the items that will definitely be subject to change is Manchego from Spain.” The team says they haven’t felt a huge impact yet, but they’re anticipating a potential hit to their bottom-line. Therefore, they’re looking for alternative solutions to save money. “We buy directly from our sources in importing, but in the meantime – just to figure out how to put ourselves in a position of strength as what everyone is doing – we’d reach out to all of our importer partners across the united states and see what they would sell to us at the better price point,” White said. Truth is, European cheese is what the business is known for. Inevitably, customers will have to pay more. “You either have to pass it on, or you have to absorb it. And there’s not much room to absorb it. In fact, there’s no room to absorb it,” White said. Distinguished economics professor Dr. Kishore Kulkarni with MSU Denver says there are multiple reasons the current administration could be imposing tariffs on goods from Europe. It's a way for the U.S. to generate more tax revenue. Tariffs are also a way to punish foreign exporters if the government believes a certain country is not playing on a level field. In the context of cheese, Dr. Kulkarni says it's likely the federal government is hoping the tariffs will help U.S. cheese producers earn more money. “As we raise the taxes on the European imports, then the domestic cheese producers like it, because the price of imported cheese goes up, and then the domestic cheese producers can obviously raise their prices a little bit, and then their competition is stopped by this tax,” Dr. Kulkarni said. However, in his opinion, tariffs are never beneficial for the economy as a whole. “40 years of economics training has been telling me that the penalty that consumers pay, is much higher than the benefits that domestic producers get,” Dr. Kulkarni said. When one country imposes a tariff, the other country is likely to retaliate. “Then it just becomes a trade war, and this is a war where nobody wins,” Dr. Kulkarni said. It's a war where the consumer is punished too. “The fact is that the cost of a tariff gets passed along to consumers,” Cheese Importers customer Steve Pittman said. Ultimately, Cheese Importers hopes the tariffs will be lifted. However, in the coming months, they plan to continue in good spirits providing their customers with the specialty cheeses they’ve grown to love.“We do the very best we can with a lot of integrity and a lot of heart and soul and tighten our belts where we can and just try to be a good contributor in the world,” White said. 3652
LONGMONT, Colo. — As some struggle with the decision on whether to hold a Thanksgiving celebration, a Colorado man says his family averted a worst-case scenario by canceling theirs.Shakeel Dalal’s family comes together every year from around the country for a large Thanksgiving celebration that usually lasts several days. A mandatory event that usually includes around 40 family members. “Everyone brings their own dish, one of my cousins brings the mashed potatoes, my cousin makes the green bean casserole, and it’s the progressive arrival of people when they get home hugging, everyone hugging all the kids, my parents,” Dalal said.They decided to still hold a small Thanksgiving this year with around a dozen people at his parent's home in the Midwest.But as the days grew closer and COVID-19 cases broke records, Shakeel grew uneasy.“Every morning I would wake up and think to myself, 'What is the risk like that I am going to get my parents sick?' My parents are in their 70’s,” he said.The Dalal family made the tough decision last week to cancel their plans.Then Monday, his father tested positive for COVID-19.The family narrowly avoided the kind of gathering health officials are concerned about.“We would never had known after I had already been there for three days and my sister would have been there for a day,” he said. “As much as I would like to tell myself, 'I would have been good to social distance and wear a mask the whole time,' it’s impossible.”Dalal shared his experience on social media hoping others would also take precautions.“Consider what you might regret if your family gets together, somebody gets COVID, and whether or not you get to see them next year,” he said.His father has minor symptoms and will hopefully fully recover. His mother has miraculously remained negative for the virus.He says the sacrifice they are making now will be worth it when they can all come together next year.“I am planning to make a full spread for myself. I bought a chicken, I am making rolls from scratch and I expect to spend a lot of time on Zoom and Facetime talking to my family,” Dalal said. Despite being the most watched sport in the country, fewer young people are playing tackle football. And while 7th grader Andrew Ek dreams of playing in the NFL, Brigid Ling worries about what the sport can do to Andrew’s and her own son’s brains. “When our oldest son was 8 he was begging us to move on from flag football to play tackle,” Ling said. “And we just weren’t ready for him to play tackle football at that age.” A new survey found participation in tackle football for kids 6 to 12 years old, dropped more than 17 percent over the past five years. A big reason for the shift: brain injuries. After more than a decade of research, there’s hard evidence of a direct link between football and CTE - a brain disease caused by repeated hits to the head. “We just felt there had to be a good interim step for kids to play,” Ling said. So rather than find a new sport for their son to play, Ling and her husband created one. “We created TackleBar as a way to allow kids to make a transition step from flag football to tackle football,” she said. In TackleBar, players hit but they don’t tackle each other to the ground. The goal is to wrap up and rip off foam bars harnessed on other player’s lower backs. Tacklebar coach Logan U’u grew up in a city that embraced hardnose football. “Playing football in Oakland, man, you got guys like Marshawn Lynch out there in your league,” U’u said. “We’re just little kids just cracking heads every single play.” Earning a football scholarship to the University of Minnesota, U’u knows about the sport’s rewards. He also knows about the risks like concussions. “You become nauseated to the point where you feel like you’re going to throw up and maybe you do throw up,” he said. “And then you feel like you want to cry but you can’t because you’re so confused. It’s a very bizarre feeling.” U’u says TackleBar teaches players proper tackling techniques and ultimately better prepares kids to transition to real take downs. Neurosurgeon and University of Minnesota researcher Uzma Samadani says TackleBar is much safer than both tackle and even flag football, and she has the research to prove it. “We published this paper in the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine,” she said. “Basically, what we found was that the injury rate was seven-fold lower in the TackleBar kids versus the other kids” For two seasons, Samadani tracked 1,000 football players ages 9 to 15, and her findings showed a big spike in safety. “I think TackleBar makes athletes safer for two mechanisms,” she said. “One is reducing head-to-head contact and other is reducing head-to-ground contact.” Despite the study, Samadani says banning contact sports isn’t the ultimate answer – safer options are. “Now that we understand that the chronic effects of neurotrauma exist and they’re very serious we have to prevent it from happening in the next generation,” she said. Now entering its fifth season, TackleBar is attracting a new generation of young football players. “Last year we were over 8,000 kids in over 200 communities,” said TackleBar CEO Tim Healy. Healey says they plan on continuing to expand to teams across the country with the hope that TackleBar can reverse the trend and ultimately bring kids back to old-school football – when they’re ready. “It pains me when I see these schools where the numbers are down so much,” he said. “This is a way we can save the game.” 3447
