Want to get away but school has started? You're not alone if you're dreaming of a place to take a break while your kids do their distance learning. There's a new trend out there called "schoolcations" for those who are ready to take a trip. There's a little bit of something for everyone. For those craving a beach getaway, there is the Four Seasons Punta Mita.“it's a beautiful destination in the Mexican Pacific,” said Miguel Peregrina, the on-site communications and marketing director at Four Seasons Punta Mita.“We were thinking what should we do because on top of all that it was long stays,” Peregrina added. “People are arriving for three weeks or longer stays.”This particular resort was the first of the of the Four Seasons to open in Latin America. After their post pandemic re-opening in early July, Peregrina said they started getting some interesting inquiries.“We are receiving a lot of requests for a study buddy, which is like a nanny with technical expertise familiar with operation in the resort that can stay with the kids while they’re doing online classes,” Peregrina said. “And we have professional tutors.”There's golf, tennis, and folklorico lessons if you're so inclined. You get to work in a cabana, while your kids do their work too.If you have mountains on your mind, you can head to the Poconos, where students are working on computers while wearing masks“They’re doing their homework or they’re online with their class at the moment, trying to stay engaged with their schoolwork,” Robert Howell, general manager of the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resorts, said. The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resorts has a "Monitored Learning Environment" for children.“Mom and dad are out and about; they could be on the porch having coffee, they could be on the golf course or sitting by the river, or swimming in the river,” Howell said. The historic Inn opened in 1911 and also boasts historic golfing."We have golf on an island in the middle of the Delaware River,” Howell said. “When you cross the bridge, you’re immersed in golf. Sam Sneed, Arnold Palmer, Walter Hagen, it has a storied history.”There are also hikes on the Appalachian Trail, river trips, or just fresh air on a patio. If your kids are craving a water park, there's the Howl N'Learn option at Great Wolf Lodge. For now, five of its 19 locations are offering a "schoolcation."“The parents who when they’re at home with their kids really don’t get a break to focus on their work,” Great Wolf Lodge communication director Jason Lasecki said. “We gave them the opportunity to put them in this independent learning center and then the parents can go off and take those conference calls and do those work things that they’re not able to do when they’re doing the remote learning with their kids.”Lasecki says they realized last spring that parents were having a hard time making it all happen.“When you’re done with your school, you’ve got the water park there,” Lasecki said. “You can go have fun in the water park that afternoon even if it's the day of your check out. You can stay and play in the water park until it closes that night so you’ve got all those fun activities at Great Wolf that you can take advantage of.” 3196
WASHINGTON (AP) — Joe Biden is sharply criticizing President Donald Trump over a report that he says, if true, contains a “truly shocking revelation” about the commander in chief and his failure to protect U.S. troops and stand up to Russia. The New York Times has reported that American intelligence officials concluded months ago that a Russian military intelligence unit secretly offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants for killing U.S. troops in Afghanistan. The report says Trump was briefed but took no action. The White House denies Trump was briefed on what it calls "alleged intelligence.” 611

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she is ordering the removal from the Capitol of portraits honoring four previous House speakers who served in the Confederacy. In a letter Thursday to the House clerk, Pelosi directed the immediate removal of portraits depicting these former speakers: Robert Hunter of Virginia, James Orr of South Carolina, and Howell Cobb and Charles Crisp, both of Georgia.Pelosi says the House was unaware of the portraits until an inventory was taken of the chamber’s statues.“We didn't know about this until we were taking inventory of the statues,” she said. “And the curator told us that there were four paintings of speakers in that and the Capitol of the United States four speakers who had served in the Confederacy.”Pelosi says that "there is no room in the hallowed halls of Congress or in any place of honor for memorializing men who embody the violent bigotry and grotesque racism of the Confederacy.″Pelosi says the portraits will be taken down in observance of Juneteenth, a June 19 holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. 1094

Walmart is retreating from Europe, merging its UK supermarket business Asda with bigger rival Sainsbury's.In return, Walmart will receive £2.97 billion (.1 billion) in cash and a 42% stake in the combined business, the companies said in a statement on Monday. The deal values Asda at £7.3 billion ( billion), and creates a mega retailer with 2,800 stores and combined sales of roughly £51 billion ( billion). The sale of Asda follows Walmart's exit from Germany, its other major outpost in Europe, in 2006.Walmart could use the cash to fuel its expansion in other international markets. The US retailer is reportedly close to agreeing to invest in India's Flipkart, an online retailer that has also attracted attention from Amazon."This proposed merger represents a unique and bold opportunity, consistent with our strategy of looking for new ways to drive international growth," Judith McKenna, the CEO of Walmart International, said in a statement. The combination with Asda will give Sainsbury's more firepower as it confronts digital competitors including Amazon and aggressive discount chains, such as Germany's Lidl and Aldi.It also creates a new UK market leader: Sainsbury's and Asda together control over 31% of the grocery market, according to Kantar Worldpanel. The current industry front runner, Tesco, has nearly 28%.Regulators will have a close look at the deal, but the geographical distribution of Sainsbury and Asda stores could limit concerns over reduced competition.Upmarket Sainsbury's is strong in southern England, while Asda, which tends to have larger stores and lower prices, is well represented in the north. Together, the supermarket chains employ 330,000 people. The UK Competition and Markets Authority last year approved Tesco's takeover of wholesaler Booker, saying the deal would not reduce competition in the sector, which is known for its razor-thin margins and frequent price wars. 1929
