SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman who participated in a local coronavirus vaccine trial is sharing her experience.Although it’s a blind study, she says she’s convinced she received the vaccine and she hopes her story will encourage others to get vaccinated.During the summer, American biotech company Moderna began some of its phase three trials in San Diego. Leslie Sullivan was one of those patients.“I put my name in the hat and by the end of July I was in getting my first dose,” she told 10News.The vaccine is given in two doses. “It felt like a flu shot and not much in the way of reaction after the first one,” Sullivan added.She says the second time she received the shot, she felt something. “By midnight I spiked a fever, I had chills, it was exactly like how the flu feels.”A day later, Sullivan was back to normal.Sullivan doesn’t know whether or not she got the vaccine, but says based on the symptoms she experienced, she’s almost positive she didn’t get a placebo. She says some people she’s spoken with mistakenly believe that if she got the actual vaccine, she had COVID-19.“The vaccine does not give you COVID this particular one has no live virus in it at all.”Both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines use MRNA technology, which relies on messenger RNA to essentially trick the body into making antibodies to fight the virus.At some point Sullivan will find out if she did indeed get the vaccine When a vaccine is made available to the public, those who received a placebo will be notified so they can get vaccinated. 1544

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - About two dozen businesses and houses of worship are taking advantage of a new rule that waives permit fees at San Diego County parks.According to the San Diego Parks and Rec Department, 14 fitness-related businesses and 12 houses of worship have been approved for permits to operate in county parks.RELATED: County Board Approves Plan to Allow Businesses to Operate at County ParksOn Aug. 5, San Diego County Supervisors approved a motion to waive permit fees and streamline the permit process so that businesses and houses of worship could hold events and classes in parks.Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who made the initial request, called it a "creative" way to provide flexibility and help those businesses survive the coronavirus pandemic."We're trying to make it as easy as possible for businesses to survive during this difficult time," Jacob told ABC 10News on the day the rule passed. "This is just another way to do it."Kaylee Kiff owns The Dance Spot in Chula Vista. She says she applied for the permit as soon as she heard about the program. She began holding classes at Otay Lakes Park just a few days later.Kiff says it saved her business."This was the first time I really felt supported as a business," Kiff says of the new rule. "I understand why we shut down, and I was happy to do it. But when it got to the point where I would lose my business, I'm just looking for any lifeline I could get. The county really was that lifeline."A county spokesperson didn't say how many more businesses or houses of worship have applied for the fee-free permits, but told ABC 10News other applications are in process for approval.Since the county changed its rules, several other cities have followed suit, including San Diego, El Cajon, Coronado, La Mesa, and Oceanside. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An incredible San Diego holiday tradition is making its way back to the bay.The San Diego Parade Bay of Lights has announced this year’s dates and times to take in the spectacular holiday tradition.This year, the parade will take place December 9 and December 16. The event begins at 5 p.m. and will make its way through the Bayfront.Before making the turn to Coronado, the parade will proceed to the pier at Cesar Chavez Park.The parade is put on annually by the Port of San Diego and brings more than 100,000 residents and visitors to the bay each year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An unlicensed Coronado dentist accused of taking local patients to Tijuana for dental implants pled guilty to felony and misdemeanor charges Wednesday.Robert Mansueto faced more than 20 charges when the trial over his practices began. Wednesday, he pled guilty to two felony counts and three misdemeanor counts, including unlicensed dentistry with risk of bodily harm, grand theft, and practicing of dentistry under a false name.Mansueto's lawyer told Team 10 they viewed the plea as a victory, saying this resolves the case for what they argue actually occurred.TEAM 10 COVERAGE: 647

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – All known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego have been put out, Navy officials announced Thursday afternoon.In a statement, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck, the commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Three, said:“After four days of firefighting, all known fires have been extinguished aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).Our fire teams are investigating every space to verify the absence of fire. Until every space is checked and there are no active fires we will not be able to commence any official investigations.We did not know the origin of the fire. We do not know the extent of the damage. It is too early to make any predictions or promises of what the future of the ship will be.We cannot make any conclusions, until the investigation is complete.What we do know is that brave Sailors from commands all across San Diego worked tirelessly alongside Federal Firefighters to get this fire extinguished and I want to thank them for their efforts. This was a Navy team effort. We had support from the air and sea. Three helicopter squadrons conducted more than 1,500 water bucket drops, fighting the fire and cooling the super structure and flight deck enabling fire crews to get onboard to fight the fire. Tugs also provided firefighting support from the waterline, cooling the ship’s hull.We had 63 personnel, 40 U.S. Navy Sailors and 23 civilians, treated for minor injuries including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. We have no personnel hospitalized.The Navy continues to work together with regulators, county and state in protecting our environment and preparing to address the community’s concerns as we move forward to the next phase.I’d like to thank our partners from state and county, the U.S. Coast Guard, and all agencies for continued support.”Ship’s shifting leads to evacuationCrews battling the fire aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were evacuated late Wednesday night after reported shifting of the warship.A Navy official told ABC 10News that fire teams fighting the blaze were told to clear the ship and pier shortly before 11 p.m. “out of an abundance of caution” after the vessel “naturally settled” due to the fire and water damage and was rocking slightly to one side.By 6 a.m. Thursday, Navy officials said fire crews returned to the ship to continue fighting the fire.Meanwhile, several groups are collecting supplies and other donations for those displaced by the ship fire and crews at the scene.
