BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese vice premier Li Keqiang has called for efforts to build the South-to-North Water Diversion Project into a water-efficient and environment-friendly project.     Li made the remarks at a meeting held by the State Council on Tuesday, saying the government should stick to policies regarding resource-conservation and environment-protection in the construction work.     Li ordered relevant departments to intensify their efforts on pollution control and eco-environment protection in both the water source area and areas along the project in the course of construction.     Li, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed that a good job on the resettlement of residents is essential.     Addressing the meeting, vice premier Hui Liangyu ordered attaching great importance to quality and safety, strengthening pollution treatment and properly resettling local residents.     Launched in 2002, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, consisting of eastern, middle and western routes, is designed to divert water from the water-rich south of the country, mainly the Yangtze River, to the dry north.     By the end of October, the government has invested 34 billion yuan (or 4.98 billion U.S. dollars) in the eastern and middle routes, and part of the project has contributed to alleviate the water strain in Beijing.

JINAN, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's Yanzhou Coal Mining Co. Ltd. has got an official approval to take over Australian coal mining company Felix Resources, according to the company's bulletin on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Friday.     The deal involving 3.3 billion Australian dollars (3 billion U.S. dollars) in a contractual agreement reached by the two companies in August would be the largest of its kind between Chinese and Australian firms.     Yanzhou Coal said in the bulletin that the National Commission of Development and Reform has approved the company's bid to take over 100 percent of the stake in Felix.     The company said that after the takeover of Felix, it would obtain an approved coal reserve of 1.5 billion tons in Australia. Its annual coal output in Australia is expected to exceed 10 million tons, accounting for one third of the company's production in China.     Yanzhou Coal, headquartered in east China's Shandong Province, is listed on stock exchanges in Hong Kong, New York and Shanghai. It owns Austar Coal Mine in Australia, and mines in north China's Shanxi Province and Shandong Province, according to information on the company's website.

GUANGZHOU, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the 2009 UCLG World Council Meeting & Guangzhou International Sister Cities Conference, which gathered more than 1,000 representatives from about 210 cities and local organizations of more than 60 nations.     Founded in May 2004, the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) is the largest local government organization in the world. The mayor of Guangzhou is the current co-president of UCLG. Xi said the UCLG has become an important platform for multilateral exchanges and cooperation as well as a bridge of friendship for global cities. He believed that the UCLG would be able to integrate wisdom and strength of urban planning and management from different nations, and play a positive role in promoting peace and development of the world. He said although the world economy had showed some positive changes, the full recovery would still have a long way to go.     China would do its best to stabilize its own economic development, while playing an active role in international cooperation in order to promote the recovery of world economy, he noted.     He reiterated that China would continue to support the developing countries with a responsible attitude and fulfill its commitments of providing foreign assistance so as to push forward the realization of UN Millennium Development Goals.     Beijing Municipal government and the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) jointly held the World Council Meeting of UCLG in June, 2005.
