(KGTV) - Box stores like Toys "R" Us are shuttering for good in coming days, but one local retailer is expanding in this toy climate.Geppetto’s has nine locations in San Diego and it just began construction on a 10th location in Coronado.“It’s amazing,” said Geppetto’s President Brian Miller, “we’re lucky to have a such a loyal customer base here.”Geppetto’s has been in San Diego for more than 40 years and Miller has been running things for the last 25 years.Miller says he may have been in competition with Toys "R" Us but he still is respectful of the fading giant."No one want's to see a business close -- whether it's Toys "R" Us or whether it’s a small business, it's not good for the economy,“ said Miller, “but with the demise of Toys “R” Us there's a great demand for toys.”A cozy aesthetic and a meticulously researched inventory that sells rather tan sitting on the shelves are what keep Geppetto’s thriving, but Miller says it starts with the customers.“We want to have them to have best experience here and we don't care if they don't buy anything today,” said Miller, “but if they have a good experience, then they come back."Geppetto’s in Coronado opens up on Orange Avenue at the end of the month. 1234
(CNN) -- House Republicans on Saturday submitted a list of witnesses they'd like to testify as part of the chamber's impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump and Ukraine. In a letter to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, Republicans listed the anonymous whistleblower, former Vice President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden, former US special envoy for Ukraine Kurt Volker, high-raking State Department official David Hale and Tim Morrison, the top Russia and Europe adviser on the National Security Council. Saturday marked Republicans' deadline to submit the request. The GOP also requested Nellie Ohr, a former Fusion GPS contractor, and Alexandra Chalupa, a former Democratic National Committee staffer, signaling that Republicans still want to focus on unsubstantiated claims related to the 2016 presidential campaign.Democrats must approve any requests submitted by Republicans and they are expected to reject the requests for Hunter Biden and the whistleblower to appear.CNN has reached out to attorneys for the whistleblower and Hunter Biden for comment. In the letter, California Rep. Devin Nunes, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, bashed what he called a "sham impeachment process." Nunes wrote that Republicans were calling the witnesses to testify in an open setting to "provide transparency to your otherwise opaque and unfair process."Schiff said in a statement later Saturday that his committee is evaluating the witness requests and "will give due consideration to witnesses within the scope of the impeachment inquiry, as voted on by the House."The House inquiry, he said, "is not, and will not serve, however, as a vehicle to undertake the same sham investigations into the Bidens or 2016 that the President pressed Ukraine to conduct for his personal political benefit, or to facilitate the President's effort to threaten, intimidate, and retaliate against the whistleblower who courageously raised the initial alarm."House Democrats are moving forward with their probe into allegations that Trump pushed Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, the former vice president's son and the 2016 election in order to help the President politically and that the White House took steps to cover it up. Trump has denied doing anything improper.Trump has pushed an unproven accusation that then-Vice President Biden improperly tried to help his son by pressuring the Ukrainian government to fire the country's prosecutor general. Hunter Biden served on the board of the Ukrainian natural gas company at the time. There is no evidence of wrongdoing by either Joe or Hunter Biden in Ukraine. The Biden presidential campaign declined to comment to CNN Saturday on the request for the former vice president's son to testify. Joe Biden was asked Friday in New Hampshire whether he himself would testify at a Senate impeachment trial if asked -- though Republicans have not yet made that request."Let's focus on the problem, here," Biden said. "The question is, did the President of the United states violate the Constitution ... And did he profit from his office." He again called on Trump to release his tax returns.Impeachment hearings are set to begin next week as Democrats prepare to take their case against Trump to the public. The open hearings will be the first time the US hears directly from the officials at the center of allegations against Trump.Schiff has said three witnesses will testify next week: US diplomat Bill Taylor and State Department official George Kent will appear on Wednesday, and former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch is set to testify Friday.A review of more than 2,600 pages of transcripts released this week from eight witnesses who have testified in the House impeachment inquiry over the past six weeks shows how controversy over Trump's Ukraine policy had been brewing inside the US government for months. It roiled efforts to bolster a key strategic alliance after Trump enlisted his own personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, to work outside normal diplomatic channels in an apparent effort to bolster his reelection chances. 4112
(KGTV) — A California Highway Patrol officer found himself in the right place at just the right time this week on a Northern California freeway.CHP officer Jeffrey Lloyd was completing a traffic stop on State Route 99 Monday when an SUV pulled up behind him. A woman in the right passenger seat was going into labor and about to give birth, according to CHP'S South Sacramento office.Officer Lloyd informed dispatch of the situation and gatherer medical equipment to help deliver the baby right there on the freeway. RELATED: San Diego welcomes first baby of 2019 in Chula VistaAs soon as he made it back to the vehicle, he began comforting the mother and helped deliver the newborn girl, CHP says."He carefully unwrapped the umbilical cord from the baby’s head and made sure both mother and baby were stable," according to South Sacramento CHP. (CNN) -- New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham wants to provide state residents with free tuition to public colleges, a plan that, if passed by the state legislature, would add New Mexico to the growing list of Democratic-led states to offer free higher education.Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, announced the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship on Wednesday while speaking at an education summit at Central New Mexico Community College. The plan would provide free undergraduate tuition at New Mexico colleges for in-state residents and aims to cover nearly 55,000 students a year. It would cover tuition and fees for recent high school graduates at four-year public colleges as well as recent high school graduates and returning adult learners at two-year community colleges."We're going to deliver a major boost. F-R-E-E, let's make it proof," Lujan Grisham said drawing a standing ovation and applause from the audience. "It's been a really long time since I crossed the stage for my diploma at the University of New Mexico, but even though I spelled it out very slowly, I still know what FREE spells and I also know that free college for New Mexico students is the right thing to do."The program is estimated to cost between to million, according to Lujan Grisham's office, and would be paid for in part by federal grants and the New Mexico Legislative Lottery Scholarship. Lujan Grisham's office said the state legislature -- where Democrats control both houses -- will need to decide how to fund the rest of the program and will take up the matter in early 2020.The plan would make New Mexico the latest state to join the movement for free college tuition. New York became the first state to make tuition free for two- and four-year colleges in April 2017, and in August, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation that will provide free tuition for two years of community college to first-time, full-time California students.College affordability is also a key topic on the 2020 campaign trail. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders announced a plan that would make public college tuition free if he were elected president, and in March, Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kamala Harris of California, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts signed on to co-sponsor Hawaii Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz's Debt-Free College Act, which would establish a matching grant to states that commit to helping students pay for the full cost of attendance -- including tuition, books and other expenses -- without taking out loans. 2529
