SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Councilman Scott Sherman is throwing his hat in San Diego's race for the next mayor.Sherman (District 7) pulled candidate intention papers this week, signaling his impending run in 2020, according to documents.Sherman becomes one of the only GOP candidates in the race to replace Mayor Kevin Faulconer, who's also a Republican. Bay Park resident Richard Hansen, a former Democrat who left the party in 2016, entered the race in September as a Republican. In 2020, both Faulconer and Sherman will term out of their respective positions.RELATED: Poll: Gloria pulls early lead in San Diego mayoral raceSan Diego's top Democratic mayoral candidates square off in debateThe Republican councilman will enter the race against several Democratic candidates, including councilwoman Barbara Bry, Assemblyman Todd Gloria, and community activist Tasha Williamson. In a September 10News/Union-Tribune poll, of these three candidates, 46 percent of respondents were undecided on who they'd support, while 36 percent sided with Gloria, 15 percent supported Bry, and 8 percent favored Williamson. That poll was also based on whether these three names were the only ones on the ballot.Candidates have until Dec. 5 to file their nomination papers with the city. The position is technically listed as "non-partisan."Sherman's district covers Miramar, Tierrasanta, Serra Mesa, Linda Vista, Mission Valley, Grantville, Allied Gardens, Del Cerro, San Carlos, and Lake Murray. 1484

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Candalee Carbonel remembers the panic she felt Tuesday when her son's principal called about an incident involving her 7-year-old. "This is a horrible situation, I pray no other family has to go through this," said Carbonel. Her son Cole has autism and managed to walk off the Miller Elementary campus in Tierrasanta without staff noticing. He walked about half a mile to his house. "It broke my heart, knowing I drop off my child every day at school in their hands. They are now responsible to be his safety, to keep him out of danger. This really breaks my heart," said Carbonel. Carbonel says panic turned to frustration when she learned how the school handled the situation. "They should've called 911, called the police, then called me, and I could've helped. I could've been somewhere; I could've come home, I could've been here for my son when he was looking for me," said Carbonel. But instead, the principal went to look for Cole herself, driving to the family's home. She found Cole inside the house, watching television on the couch, and proceeded to take him back to the school and call Carbonel. "It broke my heart that a little kid could be running the streets, and no one called his mom," said Carbonel. She's grateful he made it home safe, but Carbonel says she can't help but wonder what could have happened to him on the walk home. The military family is new to the district, and Carbonel says she's been advocating for her son to have a one-on-one aide as he did in his last school district. She was pushing for more support for her son so that an incident like this wouldn't happen. SDUSD says as a result of this incident, they are going to add an additional staff member to provide above-and-beyond support to Cole's classroom. They also plan to schedule an Individualized Education Program (IEP) review to reassess his needs.Miller Elementary's principal provided 10News the following statement: 1945

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the temperature rises and more businesses, like movie theaters, are reopening San Diegans and people from neighboring counties are flocking to get a dose of normalcy."We sold out today which is great news for everyone, we sold out today very quickly." General Manager of Theater Box Donnie Eversole said.He said it was wonderful 'being home' back in the theater, "we haven't been in the theater for 90 to 120 days so it's like a new adventure."He said it helps that the week they opened, two blockbusters, Christopher Nolan's Tenet and Bill and Ted Face the Music, are screening. While they're capped at 25% Eversole said you can make sure you claim your seat by reserving online. They are working to add more showtimes while abiding by the new guidelines.Last time San Diego had sweeping reopenings, there was a huge spike in coronavirus cases. Eversole said they are doing everything they cna to prevent another spike, "every cdc guideline is followed to the letter, we do not bend, we do not break. We follow the rules because not only is our business affected, everyone else is and we want to make sure everyone is getting a fair shake and able to recoup some of the summer that's been lost."San Diego is the only lower tier county in Southern California with the ability to have so many re-openings, drawing attention from our neighbors.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher spoke at Wednesday's press conference, urging everyone to do their part to prevent another spike, "One of the most dangerous settings is indoor gatherings, it is house parties, it is people gathering together in an indoor setting and there really is no way for us to enforce that or prevent that other than the public's help and cooperation."He said if there are gatherings and another spike in cases, businesses, like Theater Box, could shut down once again. 1857

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County officials created a Dia de los Muertos altar to honor the lives of 891 San Diegans who died from the coronavirus, and put a face and heart into the fight.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez championed the altar as a way to send a message."We wanted to honor those families and honor those lives lived and acknowledge the tremendous impact it's had, but also pay particular tribute to the impact that covid has had on the Latino community," Fletcher said.Saying more than half of those who died in the county are Latinos. This is extremely disproportionate considering only 30% of the population is Hispanic, according to the 2019 Census."When we start looking at the actual human toll and our relatives who have moved on now as a result of this virus it becomes more real and reminds us why it's so important to stay so vigilant," Gonzalez said.Vigilance is what Treasure Felder said would have saved her mom Ronda."She was our angel on earth and is now our angel in heaven, that's how we like to refer to her," said Felder. Felder says her mom was a social worker with the county, caring for foster youth and a strong woman in her 60s."She was never really ill, in the hospital, or hurt. Even if she had a little pain she'd always push through. So to see her in a place where she could barely stand up and also having to be put in a chemically induced coma was something that none of us prepared for." she said. She said she walked into her mother's room on July 4th and found she couldn't stand and was breathing heavily. She called an ambulance, even though her mother didn't want to go to the hospital, and never saw her again.Felder said her mother always had her hand out to help others and is so incredibly proud of how her mother led her life. She hopes sharing her story of pain and emptiness, now that her mother is gone, will stir others to take steps like wearing a mask and social distancing to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The altar will stay up through Tuesday morning. 2048
