BEIJING, June 7 (Xinhua) -- In an effort to safeguard their honor as role models in both academic research and conduct, some Chinese academicians on Monday called on the country's scientists to cut social activities and halt the practice of taking too many part-time jobs.Chen Yiyu, director of the committee for moral reconstruction under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Academic Divisions, urged academicians to be highly alert against and pay attention to "unhealthy practices" and corrupt behaviors.In a speech delivered at a plenary meeting of the CAS, Chen voiced firm opposition to the practice of academicians' holding too many posts and accepting inappropriate rewards.Chen said academicians should not attend thesis defense, appraisal,consultant or award-giving activities which were irrelevant to their research and they should be cautious and objective when giving comments publicly.CAS academician Zheng Shiling said he also opposed to the practices of academicians' taking too many posts and attending too many social activities, which were time-consuming and would affect their research and teaching."We should firmly oppose to the practice of holding posts in areas that have nothing to do with the academicians' research and part-time jobs that reward them improper benefits,"
BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, China's Cabinet, released here Tuesday new regulations on overseas investment, promising good business conditions but restricting funds to environmentally unsound projects.According to the new regulations, China still welcomes foreign investment in high-tech industries, services sectors, energy-saving and environmental protection, but polluting and energy-gorging or projects in industries running at overcapacity are not wanted.According to the regulations, the State Council said China will continue to support Chinese A-share listed companies in further introducing strategic investors from home and abroad, and standardize foreign companies' investment in domestic securities and corporate merger and acquisition moves.A national security examination mechanism will be built as soon as possible for foreign-funded companies' merger and acquisition operation in China, according to the regulations.Qualified foreign-funded companies are allowed to go public, issue corporate bonds or medium-term bills in China.Multinationals are encouraged by the regulations to set up regional headquarters, research and development centers, procurement hubs, financial management and other functional offices in China.Importing items for scientific and technological development by qualified foreign-funded R&D centers will be exempt from tariffs, importing value added tax and goods and services tax by the end of 2010, according to the regulations.Foreign-funded enterprises are also encouraged to increase their investment in China's central and western regions, particularly in environment friendly and labor-intensive companies.

BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- In light of the recent school attacks, China has tightened security for the college entrance examination which begins on Monday."All the relevant departments and local governments are fully prepared to respond to emergencies during the exam," said Liu Junyi, vice-director of the exam center under the Ministry of Education, on Sunday.In Beijing, police, security guards and volunteers will work together to guard the exam venues.In Henan and Anhui provinces, emergency-responses have been prepared in case of disorder due to bad weather, serious cheating behavior, food poisoning, or traffic accidents.China's national college entrance examination will be held on Monday, with more than 9.57 million examinees competing for 6.57 million places at nationwide universities and colleges.Because of the recent slew of attacks against students, boarding school teachers in south China' s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are required to walk students from their schools to the exam venues."The college entrance exam is a matter of great importance that demands joint efforts of relevant departments," Liu said.In Chongqing municipality, public security departments have inspected students' living areas around exam venues to ensure their safety.In Hubei province, relevant departments have completed a rehearsal using exam paper B in case that students are found cheating using exam paper A.In Jilin, an anti-cheating campaign has seized over 4,000 cheating device sets."We have organized a dozen expert teams, who are ready to handle nationwide emergencies and incidents," Liu said.In quake-hit Yushu of Qinghai Province, experts from the Ministry of Education have arrived to help hold the exam.A total of 9.57 million people have registered to sit for the exam this year. More than 68 percent of them will go into college. There are a total of 320,000 exam venues around the country.
