BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader He Guoqiang has urged the country' s anti-graft officials to make more efforts to solve prominent corruption-related problems by taking into account the views of the public.He, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made his remarks at an anti-corruption work conference Saturday.He called for more effective anti-corruption efforts to win the trust of the public while promoting social harmony.He also stressed better enforcement of laws and Party discipline, along with relentless punishment of any violation.According to a statement released after the conference, the country's public spending on government officials' overseas visits, transportation and official receptions this year was reduced by 5.75 billion yuan (858 million U.S. dollars) from last year in a campaign to cut extravagant public spending.Anti-corruption departments have also launched a nationwide examination into the problem of "little coffers", which are private accounts for extracting public funds. More than 24,900 cases of "little coffers" involving public money totaling over 12.24 billion yuan had been found, and a total of 1,035 officials connected to these funds have been punished, according to the statement.Also on Saturday, a statement issued by the anti-corruption department of the Supreme People's Procuratorate said procuratorates around the country had, from 2009 to August 2010, dealt with 1,715 embezzlement and bribery cases and 263 cases of duty dereliction in the use of state-owned land resources.A total of 186 officials above county level were involved in the cases, the statement said.

CHENGDU, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese government official said Wednesday that major geological disasters and densely-populated regions would be the two main areas to monitor in the nation's efforts to guard against losses caused by such disasters.In the first 10 months of 2010, 2,909 people were dead or missing following over 30,000 recorded geological disasters, Xu Shaoshi, the Minister of Land and Resources, said at a meeting held Wednesday in Chengdu, capital city of southwestern Sichuan Province.Further, the number of people dead or missing during this period was five times higher than in the same period last year, said Xu.However, the majority of these victims, about 2,000 people, were killed or went missing after five major mud and rock slides which struck areas in west China's Guizhou, Gansu, and Yunnan provinces, Xu said.A massive mudslide triggered by rainstorms slammed Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province this past August, leaving 1,510 dead and 255 others missing."Our focus in loss prevention and control in the future will be to closely watch the major geological disasters and the areas with high human concentrations," said Xu.Xu also urged local governments to make specific plans regarding geological disaster prevention, improve the assessment and pre-cautionary monitoring mechanism, and beef up rescue and response systems in the event of an emergency.

"Currently the world economy is recovering slowly, but the outlook still remains uncertain," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said while meeting with visiting IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn in Beijing.To completely get over the global financial crisis and realize sustainable development requires the international community to follow a path for mutual benefits and common development, face up to what caused the financial crisis and step up reform of the global economic and financial systems, he added.Praising China's counter measures against the crisis as "correct", Strauss-Kahn said the IMF values China's position and role and would like to build closer ties with the country.He called on countries to help one another to consolidate the growth momentum of the world economy.In an earlier meeting with Strauss-Kahn, Vice Premier Wang Qishan urged timely adjustments to global economic rules and standards to keep pace with the development of the global economy."The developing countries and emerging economies should have more say in the process," he added.He said the international community should work closely to ensure a success of the upcoming G20 Seoul Summit.In response, Strauss-Kahn said the IMF would continue to strengthen cooperation with China and increase the country's representation and voice in the organization.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Devastating mud-slides triggered by historic rainfalls were blamed for the heavy casualty toll -- 70 dead and 65 missing -- in south China's Guangdong Province when typhoon Fanapi battered the region earlier this week, a government report said Saturday.The loss caused by mud-flows and landslides in Guangdong's mountainous western region is "very serious", said a disaster assessment report conducted by provincial disaster relief authorities. "Large-scale mud-slides occurred in many places, cutting off traffic and communications to towns and villages."In Magui Township, Gaochuan City alone, mud-slides left 66 dead or missing, it added. A military helicopter is seen on a drop-off point in Xinyi, south China's Guangdong Province, Sept. 25, 2010. Some 3,765 houses collapsed, 42,190 hectares of farmland were damaged, and the economic loss reached 2.4 billion yuan, latest official data show.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south.
