SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Awaken Church continues to hold indoors services, despite orders from San Diego County to close all indoor religious services due to COVID-19 restrictions.According to the San Diego County website, three of the Awaken Church locations have received cease and desist orders. Also, the website asks attendees to refrain from posting pictures and videos of the services on social media.A video of church leaders posted on the website describes their decision to remain open for in person and indoor services.“We’ve made this decision not out of defiance but out of obedience to God,” two people said in a video on the website, adding that they plan to continue in person services.A county spokesperson said if a cease and desist order is ignored, the next step would be a closure order. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Covid Clinic’s debut in San Diego County was a little rocky in April when it was shut down by Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer.Fast forward to today, the operation seems to be running smoothly in both La Mesa and Downtown San Diego.“Since we were one of the first to open in San Diego County, there were some things that were brought to our attention that the county wanted,” said Covid Clinic CEO, Matt Collins. “So once we met each of the items that they were requesting, we’ve been able to continue testing without any issues.”Wooten sent a letter to Covid Clinic stating that the first site at MiraCosta College in Cardiff needed to shut down because the proper credentials to operate were not provided to the county. Test results also were not immediately reported to the county.Collins said the clinic now reports results to the county every day.He said, on average, about 100 to 150 people are tested at the downtown location, while about 350 to 400 are tested in La Mesa.While many testing sites are now limiting COVID-19 tests to those who have symptoms or fall in the high-risk category, Collins said anyone could schedule an appointment online to be tested at Covid Clinic.Across the country, people have also reported significant delays in test results. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County officials created a Dia de los Muertos altar to honor the lives of 891 San Diegans who died from the coronavirus, and put a face and heart into the fight.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez championed the altar as a way to send a message."We wanted to honor those families and honor those lives lived and acknowledge the tremendous impact it's had, but also pay particular tribute to the impact that covid has had on the Latino community," Fletcher said.Saying more than half of those who died in the county are Latinos. This is extremely disproportionate considering only 30% of the population is Hispanic, according to the 2019 Census."When we start looking at the actual human toll and our relatives who have moved on now as a result of this virus it becomes more real and reminds us why it's so important to stay so vigilant," Gonzalez said.Vigilance is what Treasure Felder said would have saved her mom Ronda."She was our angel on earth and is now our angel in heaven, that's how we like to refer to her," said Felder. Felder says her mom was a social worker with the county, caring for foster youth and a strong woman in her 60s."She was never really ill, in the hospital, or hurt. Even if she had a little pain she'd always push through. So to see her in a place where she could barely stand up and also having to be put in a chemically induced coma was something that none of us prepared for." she said.She said she walked into her mother's room on July 4th and found she couldn't stand and was breathing heavily. She called an ambulance, even though her mother didn't want to go to the hospital, and never saw her again.Felder said her mother always had her hand out to help others and is so incredibly proud of how her mother led her life. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the biotech industry grows in San Diego, many companies are hiring, offering people a chance at high-paying jobs in an emerging field."The jobs that are in demand are the ones most difficult to fill," says Lisa Bozinovic, Executive Director of the Biocom Institute, a trade association for the industry in California.According to Biocom's most recent survey of the companies across the state, 88 percent say they plan to expand and hire in the next 12 months. The average salary is 7,000."They need people skilled in IT, HR, administration, accounting, sales," Bozinovic says. "We're lucky that San Diego has that life-science industry and we have that opportunity."Ashley Reynolds, who works in Regulatory Affairs at Tandem Diabetes, says programs like these helped her find a place in the industry, even though she had no interest in lab work."There's no one way to do something," she says.Reynolds got a bachelor's degree in biology from UC Riverside and a master's degree in regulatory affairs at San Diego State. She also went to Cal State San Marcos for a lab tech certificate. She says it was a lot of work, but it's been worth it in the long run."You make a path to get there and don't even worry about all the other obstacles in your way," she says. "If you're determined to get there, you will."That's the message Bozinovic has as well. It may take returning to school, but it's an investment in your long-term future."For ,000, you can get a four year degree and slide right into a job," she says of the program at MiraCosta. And, remember, you don't always need a full four year degree.Bozinovic and Reynolds both say someone looking to make a change should take some time to learn about the industry first, and see what part of it interests them. The best way to do that is to go to career fairs or science expos and talk to people at the booths. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California will close state beach parking lots in San Diego County ahead of July Fourth.In a news release Friday, the state listed San Diego among six other counties where parking will also be closed at state beaches.Other state park units will remain open, according to the state, but State Park staff will monitor visitation to ensure compliance with public health orders."Everyone has the responsibility to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, including in the outdoors," the state said.
