BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday urged greater efforts be made to improve the country's earthquake emergency response system and promote earthquake safety knowledge among the public.Efforts should be made to improve emergency plans regarding quake responses and related regulations and laws, and boost the capacity building concerning quake rescue and relief in China, said Hui, while addressing a meeting on earthquake safety and disaster reduction here.He urged government agencies and local authorities to plan the work of quake safety and disaster reduction for the coming five years in a scientific manner."The work of quake safety and disaster reduction concerns the safety of people's lives and property, as well as a country's economic development and social stability," Hui said.Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu (C) speaks at a meeting on earthquake safety and disaster reduction in Beijing, capital of China, Jan. 4, 2011.He noted that China, with its quick and efficient rescue and relief efforts, had successfully stood the test of a 7.1-magnitude quake and a huge landslide that hit its northwest regions in 2010.Further, Hui demanded reconstruction work in those disaster-hit zones to be carried on in a down-to-earth manner and urged arrangements be made to ensure people living in those areas have a warm and safe winter and New Year.

BEIJING, Dec.24 (Xinhua) -- China will bring its overall money supply to a normal level with a range of policy tools next year as the government shifts monetary policy from "moderately loose" to "prudent", the central bank said Friday in a statement on its website, citing Deputy Governor Hu Xiaolian.Hu, a deputy governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC), said at a meeting with bankers that China needs a shift to a prudent monetary policy to rein in rising consumer prices and curb asset bubbles.China is facing tremendous inflationary pressures, with the country' s consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, accelerated to a 28-month high in November of 5.1 percent."The major task for next year's monetary policy will be normalizing money supplies," she said, noting that the growth in money supply, mostly measured by M2, or the broad money supply, should be slowed from the pace during the implementation of a moderately loose policy. The Chinese government should maintain a "reasonable and moderate" credit growth next year that is in line with the country's goal in economic development and inflation control.New yuan-denominated loans in China stood at 7.45 trillion yuan in the first 11 months of this year - just shy of the government's full-year target of 7.5-trillion-yuan.Hu said with the global financial crisis having eased from its peak and China's stabilized economic momentum, the country is able to maintain a steady and relatively rapid economic growth with a prudent monetary policy.Hu stressed that China is facing pressure due to ample liquidity from home and abroad, and for the next phase, the Chinese government will work on liquidity controls with a range of policy tools, including open market operations and adjustment in interest rates and reserve requirement ratios. She highlighted the use of the differential reserve requirement ratio to supplement regular policy tools, which could guide banks to lend "reasonably, moderately and steadily" and boost risk controls in the financial system.China increased interest rates by 0.25 percentage points in October and hiked the bank reserve requirement ratio six times this year to 18.5 percent and 19 percent for some large commercial banks in a move to curb lending amid accelerating inflation.

BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) of China's manufacturing sector rose to 55.2 percent in November, up 0.5 percentage points from October, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said Wednesday. The figure marked the 21th straight month that the index was above the boom-and-bust line of 50 percent. The PMI includes a package of indices to measure performance of the country's manufacturing sector. A reading above 50 percent indicates economic expansion, while that below 50 percent indicates contraction.

WUHAN, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- China is building museums and shooting a blockbuster movie in honor of the 1911 Revolution, whose centenary will be celebrated this year on both sides of the Strait. Also known as the Xinhai Revolution, the uprising in 1911 was remembered for creating the Republic of China, the first republic in the Asian history. Its spiritual leader, Sun Yat-sen, was also the founder of the Kuomintang (KMT).The Republic of China, however, ended its rule after the KMT was defeated by the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) and retreated to Taiwan in 1949.Both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have promised a grand celebration of the revolution's 100-year anniversary, which will fall on October 10 this year.On the mainland, an epic movie depicting the revolution will hit the screen in September to recall the event.Named Xinhai Revolution, the movie stars over 70 leading Chinese actors and actresses, including Jackie Chan, Li Bingbing, and Winston Chao.It is another blockbuster China has made to present landmark revolutions. The previous film was Founding of a Republic, which hailed the 60th anniversary of the birth of the People's Republic of China in 2009.Apart from encouraging people to attend the cinema, many Chinese cities are also arranging exhibitions featuring the revolution. In the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the revolution began, a new museum, the 1911 Revolution Museum, will be opened on the eve of the centenary. The city has also mounted a global search for lost materials and artifacts related to the revolution, said He Xiaoxu, the chief of Wuhan Bureau of Culture."The city government will assist in the work of gathering materials for the museum and fund the purchases," said He.So far, the museum has received 40 pieces of artifacts retrieved by purchases and 70 by donations, including three from Taiwan. The three artifacts, including one photograph and two calligraphies by revolutionary figures, were contributed by the leader of a Taiwan-based exchange promotion organization.Yang Yi, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said the Chinese mainland supported a joint celebration of the anniversary with Taiwan."The commemoration of the revolution will help unite people across the Strait in achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," said Yang.
