MACAO, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- The year of 2008 saw China make several great achievements in various fields, which is a testimony to the nation's improving comprehensive national strength, the chief of Macao said at a reception held here on Wednesday to celebrate the 59th anniversary of the People's Republic of China (PRC).     Attracting worldwide attention, the Chinese mainland successfully held the Beijing Olympics and the Paralympics in the past two months, while taking great steps in its space exploration history by accomplishing the Shenzhou VII mission that saw the first spacewalk by a Chinese astronaut, Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of the Special Administration Region (SAR), said when addressing over 1,000 officials and luminaries at the cocktail party.     He also pointed out that China showed profound and strong vigorand demonstrated its national spirit, when the whole nation mustered up its concerted effort to brave the challenge of massive snowstorms that swept several provinces and the powerful earthquake occurred in the Sichuan province that led to a large number of deaths.     The party was part of the annual events held on China's National Day every year. TAIYUAN, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang underscored the scientific outlook on development and production safety during an inspection tour to northern Shanxi Province on Wednesday and Thursday.     Zhang visited the site of the Sept. 8 landslide in Xiangfen County on Thursday morning, where an unlicensed iron ore tailings pond burst and killed at least 262 people.     "The September 8 landslide was a very serious production safety incident, causing great losses, having a bad impact and leaving a deep lesson," he said.     The vice premier said a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident should be conducted and that those responsible for it should be punished seriously in accordance with law.     A lesson should be drawn from the incident and people should be put first, he stressed, adding that more efforts should be exerted to crack down on unlicensed production and corruption behind production safety incidents.     He also demanded local authorities have a scientific outlook on development.     Production safety should be strengthened through more investment, scientific and technological progress and better management, the vice premier said.

SINGAPORE, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The first informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Six-Party Talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue concluded here on Wednesday with "very meaningful results", Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said.     In a news briefing after the close-door talks on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Meeting, Yang said that the Six-Party Talks have "very meaningful results", adding that they exchanged views and deepened understanding and expressed the will of continued pushing forward the Six-Party Talks further.     Yang said, "with joint efforts, the six parties agreed that the initial success has been achieved" and the informal talks "made useful preparation for the formal Six-Party Ministerial Talks in early day".     The Chinese foreign minister said the six parties reaffirmed they will earnestly fulfill their commitment to the signed joint statements and related documents.     Yang said all agreed the Six-Party Talks are an important platform for exchanging views and enhancing understanding, adding that the six parties should continue to enhance their exchanges so as to "achieve mutual benefit and win-win progress". DUSHANBE, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe on Tuesday for a state visit and to attend the 8th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, scheduled for Thursday.     Hu flew to Dushanbe from Seoul after concluding a state visit to the Republic of Korea, and was met at the airport by Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon.     During his stay in Dushanbe, President Hu will hold talks with Rakhmon and sign bilateral cooperation deals related to political, economic and trade exchanges, according to a senior official of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.     In a written speech delivered at the airport, Hu said China and Tajikistan are friendly neighbors sharing common mountains and rivers.     Since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 16 years ago, bilateral relations have witnessed smooth development with tangible results achieved in political, economic, security and other areas, he said. BEIJING, May 11 -- China's monetary authorities are struggling to address conflicting policy goals, but inflation will remain the top policy concern, the country's central bank governor said on Saturday.     While the United States and other countries are more focused on fending off a recession, China's monetary policy must target inflation over growth and employment, Zhou Xiaochuan, the People's Bank of China governor, told a forum in Lujiazui, Shanghai's financial center.     "There is no cure-all medicine, and we have to make the final decisions -- everyone hopes there would be a cure-all solution, but there is not," said Zhou.     China's consumer price inflation would likely to rise to 8.5 percent in April from 8.3 percent in March, two sources familiar with the data said late on Thursday. The data, which is subject to last-minute revisions, will be officially released on Monday.
