SAN DIEGO (CNS & KGTV) -  Police believe a woman who crashed her car into a home in Talmadge  was intoxicated at the time.The crash happened about 2:30 p.m. Saturday at a home on Winona Avenue near Lucille Drive, according to San Diego police.A 23-year-old woman was driving her 2017 Honda on Winona Avenue at a high speed when she veered off the road and ran into the corner of a nearby home, according to San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims. The woman suffered serious head injuries and fractures to her right leg, and had to be taken to a hospital.No one in the home was injured.Police processed the driver for allegedly driving under the influence, Heims said.A building engineer was called in to assess structure damage, and the Red Cross helped with two residents displaced by the crash, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Jose Ysea said. 880

SAN DIEGO — A College Area nonprofit that is seeing record requests for its services may not survive the pandemic itself.Sharia's Closet provides free clothes to people who have an emergency need. Founder Shamine Linton said with the Coronavirus pandemic, the organization has already served more than 2,500 families in 2020, a record pace. "Due to unemployment, homelessness and domestic violence, our needs have grown," Linton said. Sharia's Closet, named for Linton's daughter, operates out of a former dental office near San Diego State University. It's divided into five rooms that are filled with clothes for children, teens, men and women - casual to professional. Linton said the organization gets connected to families through 54 social service organizations. While the demand is at an all-time high, the prospects of surviving past 2020 are not. "I don't think I'll have the money to continue for the next year," Linton said. Linton said the organization survives off community donations, but those have lagged in this economy. She has reduced hours for her staff of two, and the closet is now only open three days a week. The formerly manageable ,500 in monthly operating costs is now becoming daunting. "I'm hoping for financial donations to help keep our doors open, to help keep the service for the community that needs it the most," Linton said.Linton said Sharia's Closet has been able to receive public assistance for personal protective equipment, but not operations. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 20-year-old man was arrested today on suspicion of attempted murder following a SWAT standoff after a shooting in the City Heights area that sent two people to the hospital, police said.The shooting occurred in the 1800 block of Rowan Street at 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department.When officers arrived on scene, they found a 21-year-old man with an apparent gunshot wound to his head, Brown said. The victim directed officers to his companion, who was seated in a nearby car and also appeared to have been shot.The officers provided aid to the victims, who were later taken to a hospital, Brown said. The man who called for help is expected to survive his injuries, but the other victim was not expected to survive.Homicide detectives were called to the scene to investigate. ``While the investigation has just begun, detectives have learned that the two men arrived in San Diego from Central California to meet with a male at 1700 Rowan Street,'' Brown said. ``It is believed the men were meeting to conduct a marijuana transaction. The suspect shot both victims and fled to a nearby residence.''A SWAT team and emergency negotiators arrived and attempted to talk the suspect into surrendering peacefully, the lieutenant said. After 1:30 a.m. Saturday, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. Matatoa Samoata, 20, was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of two felony counts of attempted murder and one count of grand theft, according to jail records. SAN DIEGO — A growing number of restaurants in San Diego want to wall off the parking spots outside their front doors and replace them with tables.The concept is called a Parklet, and the city of San Diego appears to be ready to embrace it - at least until social distancing mandates lift. "It's San Diego. We're getting the most beautiful weather of the year. Let us have some seats out there. Let us have some tables," said Merritte Powell, who owns La Puerta restaurant on 4th Avenue. Powell is readying an application to the city that would allow him to build on a curbside section of the street in front of his restaurant and put more seating. He says it's key to survive amid social distancing restrictions, which have limited his capacity. In fact, La Puerta even with hourlong waits still only pulls in 50 percent of the revenue it would have made before the Coronavirus outbreak. On bad days, revenue drops by as much as 70 percent. "Because of the way the seating is, because of the social distancing, stuff like that, I'm nowhere near where I need to be," Powell said. On July 7, the City Council will consider an urgency ordinance that would waive some fees for Parklets and help streamline their construction. Restaurants from downtown, Little Italy and North Park are all readying applications. The opportunity could help level the playing field for restaurants on streets that cannot be closed to vehicle traffic for on-street dining. The city has already permitted road closures on 5th Avenue and India Street for restaurants to expand. A stretch of North Park could be next. The urgency ordinance would last until social distancing restrictions expire or are lifted. 1693
