SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- If you are experiencing mental fatigue like never before, you are not alone. Many people who are used to forging ahead in times of crisis, like this coronavirus pandemic, say the feeling is unfamiliar. Emily Chandler of Vista says she never could have imagined her kids would still be distance learning in the fall. "This has been going on so long, and I'm just exhausted," Chandler says. Her three sons are in three different schools and her oldest, Timmy, has autism. Helping them all with school means studying up on things herself. Marriage and family therapist Serene Carruthers, of Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, says what Chandler is feeling is tied to the seemingly endless nature of the pandemic."It really is because our body is built to respond to stressful events typically that last for a duration of a short period of time," says Carruthers. "Some experts call it surge capacity. Like a battery our adaptive system can provide us with the mental, physical and emotional power to survive a short-term emergency. Then it needs to be recharged which is easier said than done during a pandemic because for many people, their self-care rituals have been upended or canceled.""It is a very lonely time and I'm not getting that energy, that recharge," says Chandler. Carruthers says not to underestimate the power of play, which is free and can be done anywhere. She also recommends shifting expectations, maintaining connections with loved ones, keeping a gratitude journal about the good in your life, and exercising even if it's just walking in your home. Chandler says the reopening of her gym helped her feel like herself again, and she and Carruthers both say it's all right to ask for help, which Chandler says she's glad she did."I got on an anti-anxiety medication and I'm not embarrassed about that. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Last week, whale watchers caught the glimpse of a lifetime, a beluga whale swimming through San Diego's waters.The rare sighting was captured about seven miles off the coast on Friday. Beluga whales are native to Arctic waters and while they do swim south during the summer months, San Diego is still considered a long way off for the animal. Gone Whale Watching owner Domenic Biagini captured the amazing find via drone video. "Imagine if you were going outside to take your dog for a walk and you saw a polar bear," Biagini said. "It doesn't make any sense at all. He told his passengers they were going to meet up to help investigate, not knowing what to expect.But once they located the animal, "I knew immediately that it was a beluga whale, which is insane," Biagini said.The whale is thousands of miles away from its typical habitat range. According to the San Diego Surfriders, the last known official southernmost sighting was in 2018, when a wayward beluga whale was spotted in the United Kingdom's River Thames in 2018.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is currently monitoring the whale's health and welfare as it's in the area. Biagini said it appeared the whale was in generally good health and has been eating. He adds that it appeared to be an older adult male by the curling of its pectoral fins."Pretty monumental moment not just for San Diego, but for whale watching in general," Biagini says.Friday's discovery comes as Biagini says this summer is ripe for more rare viewing opportunities of blue whales off San Diego's coast. Thanks to an abundance of krill and pristine conditions, blue whales are already being spotted nearby. Blue whale sightings usually come in spurts, according to Biagini, while grey whales are more reliable, making this season even more of a treat. 2524

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Libraries across San Diego County adapted quickly during the coronavirus pandemic, offering digital options for people to continue reading, researching, and connecting with the community."It's hugely important," says Migell Acosta, the San Diego County Library System Director. "People need libraries for serious study and recreational reading and then their information needs.""We knew that our main services were going to be reference, picking up library material and connecting to our technology," adds Ady Huertas, the Supervising Librarian of Youth and Family Services for the City of San Diego. "Luckily, during this time, we've been able to maintain that service, and we're really happy that we're able to do that."Moving to digital services when the pandemic forced branches to close took some adjustments but ultimately proved successful.Libraries moved money in their budgets from buying physical books to buying ebooks so people could have more options to download. The County library system went from 2 million ebook downloads in 2019 to 3 million in 2020 and amassed the state's 2nd most extensive digital library.The City Library created a virtual hub on Facebook to connect with people through storytime, videos, and more. It quickly grew to more than 2,000 followers."We went from creating some basic programming daily to having multiple programs per day for all ages," says Huertas. "We have a schedule. We have storytimes, book clubs, book talks, crafts, stem, learning opportunities, and we even have mindfulness programs and other folks we collaborate to create the content."Both systems also gave out nearly 30,000 take-home summer reading kits to keep kids excited about literacy.The County sent magazines and paperback books to members of the homeless population living in shelters and hotels.Libraries also expanded their online learning options. The County's high school diploma program for people aged 19 and up graduated 25 people during the pandemic and currently has 100 more enrolled.They also offered access to Linda.com, an online learning library of "how-to" videos."I love YouTube like everybody else," says Acosta. "But these are classes that are more business skills, how to do a presentation, accounting skills, and then deep level computer skills."They've had several thousand hours' worths of videos already viewed on the service since they added the service.In the spring, libraries were able to add in-person pick up of books. Over the summer, they offered limited access for people to come into the branches.They also made it easier for people to become library customers by offering library cards with only a phone number or email address.To help address the equity gap, libraries also allowed people to check out computers and other devices. They also expanded wifi signals at the branches to have internet access for people sitting outside the library.Library officials say the new emphasis on digital has made them better libraries in the long run."Whenever there's a challenge to be met, and you step up to the challenge, personally or as an institution, you become better for from that experience," says Huertas. 3187
