SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Marine Corps Air Station Miramar broke ground Friday on its first hangar to house the F-35, the most advanced fighter jet in the world.While the plane may be controversial, the hope is to replace aging aircraft. The new project will also include a flightline expansion."We're building new F-35 joint strike fighters and we're going to send them right here to Miramar,” President Trump said in his visit to the base Tuesday.Congressman Scott Peters and other military leaders were in attendance at the groundbreaking, thrilled about finally moving these projects forward."We're really taking care of the nation's defense," said Rep. Peters, representing the 52nd District. "One of the things when I went to the Armed Services Committee was to make sure that this facility was high on the list of priorities," he said. Harper Construction won the bid and will employ about 2000 workers.  The 160,000 square foot hangar is designed to hold up to 12 F-35s."We need to upgrade the infrastructure, the connections, the systems inside the hangers," said Col. Jason Woodworth, the Commanding Officer at MCAS Miramar.While critics have pointed to design flaws and skyrocketing costs on the new planes, the military says aging aircraft like the F/A-18 hornets are becoming tougher to maintain."Older airplanes are like that telephone on your wall you had when you were a kid with the rotary dial on it," Woodworth said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's not often you hear about a bird being rescued from a tree. That's a task San Diego Fire-Rescue was up to in Mission Bay Thursday. Around 12:30 p.m. County Animal Services called for special service when they found an owl entangled in a tree. In a Facebook post SDFR wrote that the owl was caught in fishing line, leaving it suspended from the branches of the tree near 1775 E. Mission Bay Drive. The Engine 20 crew used a ladder to get to the bird and help set it free.  533

San Diego International Airport was pretty empty Wednesday afternoon with no crowds or long lines and everyone was wearing masks.While it appeared to be smooth sailing for passengers, airline workers are faced with more of a challenge.“For United Airlines no one has been rehired for the holiday,” said Dante Harris. He’s a flight attendant of 21 years and President of the Association of Flight Attendants Southern California chapter. Harris was one of many hit by massive airline layoffs in October when stimulus money ran dry.“Industry-wide, more than 100,000 employees in the airline industry have been furloughed,” said Harris. “It has been absolutely a disaster.”While he’s not currently flying, some of his colleagues still are. Many of them faced with this problem:“Flight attendants are trying to enforce the mask policy, there are people who get belligerent, people who get non-compliant,” said Harris.Cases across the county are on the rise, yet Harris says some airlines are pushing towards getting back to normal.“Selling alcohol and serving food.
