Christmas is nearly two months away, but that hasn't stopped many Americans from starting their holiday shopping. According to data released by the National Retail Federation, 40 percent of Americans start their holiday shopping by Halloween. That is why many retailers begin holiday marketing in September, the NRF said.. In additional holiday shopping data released by the NRF this week, one piece of unknown data is whether prices will increase this holiday season due to tariffs. "Some holiday merchandise including apparel, footwear and televisions are subject to new tariffs that took effect on September 1, and other products will have tariffs applied on December 15," the NRF said. The NRF added that retailers will work to limit the impact of tariffs, but that many small businesses will be unable to absorb the costs. For this holiday season, the NRF expects retails to rake in 4 percent more revenue compared to 2018, with between 7.9 billion and 0.7 billion in total revenue. While spending on gifts for family is expected to decline, spending on gifts for non-family members could see a giant increase the NRF said. For the average consumer, they said they will spend ,047.83 this holiday season. Nearly 59 percent of consumers said they will shop for gift cards; 52 percent for clothing and accessories; 35 percent for books and other media; 29 percent for electronics; and 24 percent for home decor. Of the ,047.83, consumers said they'll spend 1 on gifts for the family, which is actually down from 6 from last year. Gifts for non-family is expected to see a jump from 6 in 2018 to 2 in 2019.Non-gift spending is expected to increase from 5 in 2018 to 2 this year, as consumers said they will take advantage of discounts offered during the holiday season. “Younger consumers are helping drive the spending increase this year,” Prosper Insights Executive Vice President of Strategy Phil Rist said. “They’re not just spending on their immediate family members, they’re also treating their larger circle of co-workers and friends to gifts.” More than half of shoppers between the ages of 25 and 34 (52 percent) plan to purchase gifts for co-workers, and 82 percent of those between 18 and 24 plan to purchase gifts for their friends. 2285

DES MOINES, Iowa — Vandals have defaced the artwork and property of an Iowa man who displayed paintings of Confederate flags and swastikas in his front yard. The vandal or vandals scrawled the words “Nazi scum” on a trailer and the pickup parked at William Stark’s house in Des Moines and spray-painted over several of the wooden pallets in his yard on which he had painted the Confederate battle flag, 414

Every year, a motorcycle gang rides through the serene mountains of southern Utah. However, it’s not your typical pack of motorcyclists. It’s a group of dentists from all over the world, riding to raise money.Steven Anderson is the co-founder of Smiles for Life, a charity that’s raised nearly million, thanks to motorcycle rides like this one in Utah.“All the proceeds from this ride go to fund a dental humanitarian initiative that we do in several third-world countries,” Anderson says. These fundraisers help families and children across the globe who have little to no access to dental care.“We’ve trained people from around the world to do dentistry that haven’t been to dental school, and they now have a way to earn a living for their families,” says Roy Hammond, who has been a dentist for more than 30 years.Hammond started Miles for Life almost 20 years ago. “It changed my life, my outlook, on the world that we live in and the hardships of the people and lack of access to the comforts of life we have,” Hammond says.Dentist Ron Massie came from Missouri to ride with the other dentists and their families. He says he rides to get the word out about the lack of dental care around the world.Just like the perspective they get from riding on the open road, the motorcyclists learned there is more to life than what money can buy. They all agree that happiness doesn’t come from stuff.“It’s about giving back, and that’s so true of life, Massie says. “It’s the quality of the people and the fact that everybody is willing to give more than they get.” 1576

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Clinton Township man has been charged with operating as a health professional without a license after a search indicated he was running a dental practice in the basement of his home.Police say they served a search warrant on an unnamed suspect at his home. In the basement, they a dentist chair, an X-ray machine, dentistry utensils and molds for teeth among other items.Reports allege that receipts for equipment and supplies were found outside the home as well.According to police, the suspect stated he was seeing one to two patients in his home per day, using his church as a word-of-mouth referral service.“We are thankful that someone had the courage to come forward and report the defendant for his criminal behavior,” Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith said. “The wanton disregard for the law by the defendant is disturbing.”The suspect faces up to 4 years in prison for the felony. 931
