WELLINGTON, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Scientists in New Zealand have developed a new drug to fight previously untreatable hypoxic cancer tumors, which form in areas of the body starved of oxygen.The researchers at the Auckland University have entered an agreement for the clinical development of CEN-209, which was developed over 10 years of research, said a statement from the university Tuesday.CEN-209 was designed to enhance the effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in solid hypoxic tumors, which were resistant to standard cancer therapies, said the statement. In lung cancer patients for example, about half of tumors had hypoxic regions.The new drug worked by damaging the DNA of hypoxic cancer cells, while leaving normal, healthy tissues alone.CEN-209 was designed and created by researchers at the university's Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre (ACSRC), using computer models of drug transport within tumors to accurately predict the anti-tumor activity of the drugs."Our computer models of drug transport developed in-house allowed the synthetic chemists to test their design theories and considerably shortened the discovery process," said Associate Professor Michael Hay, who led the ACSRC research chemists."CEN-209 improves markedly on previous agents in this class in terms of its ability to penetrate tumors, and this is reflected by its improved activity in the laboratory, when combined with long or short courses of radiotherapy," said researcher Professor Bill Wilson.Under the agreement between the university's Auckland UniServices Ltd. and California-based Centella Therapeutics, Inc., a subsidiary of Varian Medical Systems, Inc., Centella will have exclusive rights to CEN-209, which it will develop and trial with Cancer Research UK.The work on CEN-209 is the culmination of a program initiated with funding from the U.S. National Cancer Institute, and more recently from the Maurice Wilkins Centre for Biodiscovery. Ongoing preclinical research on CEN-209 and a backup compound was funded by grants from the Auckland Medical Research Foundation, Genesis Oncology Trust and Health Research Council of New Zealand, said the statement.

XI'AN, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people were killed and 22 others missing over the weekend in rain-triggered landslides in northwestern Shaanxi Province, local officials said.As of 5:30 p.m. Sunday, rescuers had retrieved 10 bodies from beneath the rocks and mud in Baqiao District of the provincial capital of Xi'an, while another five were injured, said Zhu Zhisheng, vice mayor of Xi'an, who was at the site.Another 22 people remained missing, Zhu said, adding the injured were hospitalized and in stable condition.The landslide around 2 p.m. Saturday unleashed about 100,000 cubic meters of rock and mud down the mountain, engulfing a brick factory and destroying part of a nearby ceramics factory in the suburban district of Xi'an.Rescuers found four bodies on Saturday night and six others were retrieved on Sunday.More than 700 police, firefighters and local residents joined the rescue which went on Sunday night.However, the rescue was hampered by three ensuing slides between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday as heavy rains continued slashing the city.About 10,000 cubic meters of newly-triggered rock and mud roared down to the site, forcing rescuers to suspend searching temporarily.Heavy downpours in the province also caused havoc in other areas.A heavy rainfall on Saturday night triggered a landslide that buried a residential house in the suburban district of Jintai in Baoji City, some 175 km to the west of Xi'an.Two people were dug out but later died after they were rushed to a nearby hospital, the municipal government of Baoji said in a statement Sunday.The downpours also brought a landslide in the same district early Sunday morning. TAMPA, the United States, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The HIV/AIDS patients in the U.S. state of Florida are in dispute with state authorities over a proposal to impose tighter restrictions on those who qualify for drugs provided by the state's AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP).According to the proposed restrictions, individuals would have to earn less than 21,000 U.S. dollars annually to qualify for ADAP drugs. If approved by the Florida Department of Health (FDH), this would affect approximately 1,150 HIV/AIDS patients."The FDH is currently looking at the number of cost containment activities, including altering the financial eligibility for ADAP services," said FDH's press secretary Jessica Hammonds. "After soliciting public input on this matter, the department is in the final stages of evaluating the matter."The Florida ADAP program serves almost 9,500 clients, each of whom receiving 8,600 dollars in funding annually, Hammonds said. There are still another 3,482 on a waiting list.Four FDH sponsored public hearings were held in April and May on the proposal to reduce HIV/AIDS funding. Two were held in Miami, one in Tampa, and the other one was held in the state capital city of Tallahassee. WASHINGTON, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Women who have higher levels of the appetite-controlling hormone leptin have fewer symptoms of depression, and this apparent inverse relationship is not related to body mass index (BMI), a new study finds. The results were presented Monday at The Endocrine Society's 93rd Annual Meeting in Boston, the United States."Animal data suggest that leptin may reduce anxiety and improve depression. Our study in women suggests that leptin may indeed have antidepressant qualities," said the study's lead author, Elizabeth Lawson, of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.Leptin, the product of fat cells, signals satiety, or fullness. It is low in thin women and high in obese women, according to Lawson. She also said there is an increased prevalence of anxiety and depression in certain conditions in which leptin levels are typically low. These include the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, in which there is abnormally low weight and body fat, and functional hypothalamic amenorrhea, in which women have stopped menstruating despite having normal weight."It is unknown whether low leptin levels contribute to the development of mood disorders in these women," Lawson said.She and her co-workers studied the relationship between leptin levels and symptoms of anxiety and depression in 64 women. Fifteen of the women had anorexia nervosa, 12 were normal weight with hypothalamic amenorrhea, 20 were normal weight and in good health, and 17 were overweight or obese but still healthy.All subjects were asked questions to assess symptoms of depression and anxiety, with high scores indicating more symptoms. Besides measuring leptin levels in the blood, the researchers assessed the women's BMI, a measure of weight for height.The relationship between leptin and depression symptoms was independent of BMI. This finding indicates that leptin may mediate symptoms of depression and that this effect is not a function of low weight, Lawson said."Further research administering leptin to humans will be important in understanding whether this hormone has a potential role in the treatment of depression," she said.
