LHASA, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Tens of thousands of Tibetans, dressed in traditional costumes, made pilgrimages to temples to pray for a peaceful and prosperous new year on Sunday, the first day of their traditional New Year.The Year of the Iron Tiger in the Tibetan calendar began on Feb. 14 this year, exactly the same date as the Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year. WASHINGTON, March 24 (Xinhua) -- China and U.S. economic and trade frictions should be handled appropriately to advance the healthy and steady development of the bilateral economic and trade ties, a senior Chinese trade official said on Wednesday."For the moment, the biggest challenge facing the China-U.S. economic and trade relationship is trade protectionism and the politicizing of our economic and trade issues," Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Zhong Shan told reporters at Embassy of China in Washington. "We hope that China and the U.S. can treat each other as partners instead of rivals."Zhong said China is against the tendency to politicize bilateral economic and trade issues.Under the pressure of the election year and high unemployment rate, some U.S. senators last week proposed a legislation to press China to appreciate its currency.The bill requires the U.S. Treasury Department to identify countries with "fundamentally misaligned currencies" and asks the Commerce Department to investigate currency undervaluation as a " countervailable subsidy."Meanwhile, 130 U.S. congressmen wrote to the government, demanding the Obama administration take actions to appreciate the RMB against the dollar."The RMB exchange rate is not the root cause for U.S. trade deficit with China or key to U.S. unemployment," Zhong said.He said that the economic structures of the two countries are highly complementary. To force an appreciation in the RMB cannot resolve U.S. deficit or unemployment.Zhong noted that given the large scale, broad scope and rapid development of the China-U.S. bilateral economic and trade cooperation, frictions and problems are inevitable."As long as the two sides stick to a strategic and long-term approach to our economic and trade ties and appropriately handle trade frictions through communication and consultation, we can find common grounds and shelf differences and constantly further the bilateral economic and trade relations."

BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Monday urged political advisors to offer practical suggestions to the country's pressing task of coping with climate change.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a political advisory body, made the call as he presided over a lecture given to the Standing Committee of the 11th CPPCC National Committee.Xie Zhenhua, Vice Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and one of China's leading negotiators for climate change talks, gave committee members a lecture about key climate change issues and China's stands on them.The lecture is aimed at helping the members, whose main duty is to use their expertise to give suggestions to policy makers, to familiarize with and pay more attentions to the issue.Jia said while the global climate change is a major challenge for all countries, China's handling of the issue could impact on the country's overall economic and social development as well as the people's interests.Jia asked the members to conduct further studies in accelerating the adjustment of economic growth mode, industrial and energy structure, and controlling greenhouse gas emissions so as to offer advice to help the country to cope with problems in its development.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's UN Ambassador Zhang Yesui on Wednesday called on concerned parties to create " favorable conditions" for an early resumption of Palestinian- Israeli peace talks.Addressing the Security Council in an open debate, Zhang, the council president for January, said that China remains "deeply concerned over the stalemate in the Middle East peace process and the bleak prospects for resumption of the peace talks.""We hope the parties concerned will strengthen their belief in the peace talks,overcome the difficulties and interruptions, create favorable conditions for an early resumption of the peace talks, and avoid acts that may erode the mutual trust or prejudge the outcome of the negotiations," he said.Zhang urged Israel to freeze all settlements activity and cease the building of separation walls."We urge Israel to open all the border crossings to Gaza, and ensure that the region achieves reconstruction as soon as possible and its people return to normal life," he said.Zhang also emphasized the importance of Palestine's internal reconciliation, voicing hope that all factions "bear in mind the long-term interests of the nation and work together to strive for the Middle East peace process."He also urged the international community to "redouble its efforts to push for all parties to build the momentum for negotiations and inject new impetus into the peace process."
