SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Every Thursday afternoon in Logan Heights, people line up to get food.Angela Brannon-Baptiste is the woman who started the pantry and the organization that supplies it, called "It's All About the Kids".The non-profit has been serving local families since 2004, handing out more than 1.5 million meals and counting."They tell us that for many of them this is the only food they're receiving because there's just no money to buy food," said Baptiste. When the pandemic hit the group saw the need grow almost overnight."We saw hundreds of additional families come to see us each week and it was a bit frightening," Baptiste explained.Although they'd like to help everyone, they're restricted by their own means.Unlike some other food distribution programs that operate on a first come first serve basis, It's All About the Kids takes a more targeted approach."We decided we needed to narrow that down and really work with the schools to identify who was most in need, so that's who we help now," Baptiste said.At this point, that help is going to about 2,200 families currently on the program. Those who show up get boxes of not just something to eat, but something good to eat.Batiste says it's important they provide as much fresh food as possible, " I think that food is so important and that is our responsibility as successful adults to give back to those that are less fortunate and to help them, so that's just always been my mantra." 1463

It will also get a new name: The Campus at Horton.Stockdale plans to use the center to cater to the tech industry and entice technology companies to the area.RELATED: Grocery chain suing Horton Plaza over millions in sales losses"The Campus at Horton will be a thriving innovation hub, comprised of creative office space, captivating entertainment options, urban lifestyle retail choices and contemporary food and beverage experiences, catering to leading technology and biotechnology employers, locally and nationally," Steven Yari, Managing Director of Stockdale Capital, said. The project is expected to create 3,000 - 4,000 jobs and generate more than .8 billion in annual economic activity."We're ripe in downtown for an office explosion," said Gary London, senior principal of London Moeder Advisors, a commercial real estate analytics firm. "There's been a big movement in corporate American to marry the places where people work with the places where people live."A rendering of The Campus shows the project's bold re-imagining of Horton Plaza to create an office and retail campus, green space, and transform walkways into one boardwalk through the site.RELATED: Jessop's?Jewelry closing after 125 years in San DiegoThe firm added there will be an opportunity for additional construction to add 1.5 million square feet to the site."Our hope is that this project will serve as a catalyst for bringing high-tech tenants and thousands of jobs to downtown and spur other developments that will do the same," Ashley Gosal, Inhouse counsel for Bosa Development, said.Construction on the project is expected to begin in early 2019, while the project is slated for completion in fall 2020.A series of community workshops will be held with Stockdale, the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, and Regional Economic Development Corporation to discuss the plan and gather community feedback. 2268

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Even though many local businesses have struggled amid the pandemic and San Diego County saw an unprecedented spike in unemployment in the second quarter, there has not been a significant jump in the number of empty retail storefronts -- at least not yet.The vacancy rate in San Diego County ticked up slightly to 5.6 percent in the second quarter, according to an analysis by commercial real estate firm CBRE.Vacancies tend to be a lagging indicator. Large national chains like 24 Hour Fitness and Pier 1 Imports have announced closures in recent weeks, but the businesses are still occupying their commercial spaces. 24 Hour Fitness is closing four clubs in San Diego County. Pier 1 Imports is closing all 11 of its local stores; four of those locations have already closed. While vacancies take time, the pandemic has slowed the region’s commercial real estate market in other ways, said CBRE Associate Field Research Director Michael Combs.New leasing activity in the retail sector dropped to nearly a 10-year low in the second quarter, down nearly 50 percent from the first three months of 2020.“There just haven't been a lot of new deals as tenants especially in retail are waiting to see how this situation plays out,” he said. The slowdown in new leasing activity may be a sign that companies are holding off on plans to expand operations, since new leases with larger footprints are typically signed far in advance. 1448

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters responded after a fire broke out in an abandoned building in San Diego’s Lincoln Park neighborhood Saturday morning. The fire started inside a building on Ocean View Boulevard and 47th Street around 9:30 a.m. Large plumes of black smoke could be seen from miles away. The building that caught fire is owned by a nearby church. According to a church official, the building was used to help house the homeless. The official told 10News the church recently told those staying in the building they had to leave after several incidents. At this time, it’s unclear what started the fire or if anyone was injured. "This fire has been stopped. Crews will be here for a few hours. Please use caution if you are in the area but take alternate routes if possible," San Diego Fire-Rescue said in a Tweet. 833
