BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- China may see increased planting acre of early rice this year, though drought has not been relieved in some areas, said a statement on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture on Saturday.China is expected to plant 88.5 million Mu (5.87 million hectares) of early rice this year, about 1.6 million Mu more than the previous year, thanks to soaring rice prices and policy incentives, the statement said.However, drought continues in Hubei Province, Poyang Lake areas in Jiangxi Province, Dongting Lake areas in Hunan Province and Leizhou Peninsular in Guangdong Province, the statement said.The drought has affected about 3 million Mu of paddies in Hubei in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, the statement said.The statement urged local agricultural departments to help facilitate paddy management, as strong rains were forecast for southern China from Friday to next Tuesday.The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River received about 40 to 60 percent less rain this year than in previous years -- this year being the least amount of rain in the past 50 years, said the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

WASHINGTON, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A trace amount of radioactive iodine has been found in a sample of milk from the west state of Washington, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Wednesday.According to a joint statement from the two agencies, results from a screening sample taken March 25 from Washington detected 0.8 pCi/L of iodine-131, which is more than 5,000 times lower than the Derived Intervention Level set by the FDA.These types of findings are to be expected in the coming days and are far below levels of public health concern, including for infants and children, the statement said.Iodine-131 has a very short half-life of approximately eight days, and the level detected in milk and milk products is therefore expected to drop relatively quickly."Radiation is all around us in our daily lives, and these findings are a minuscule amount compared to what people experience every day. For example, a person would be exposed to low levels of radiation on a round trip cross country flight, watching television, and even from construction materials," said Patricia Hansen, an FDA senior scientist.

HOUSTON, April 15 (Xinhua) -- A major contractor for the U.S. space shuttle on Friday announced plans to lay off about 50 percent of its employees this summer after NASA retires the orbiter fleet.The contractor, Houston-based United Space Alliance, said it will cut 2,600 to 2,800 jobs, including 1,850 to 1,950 employees in Florida, 750 to 800 employees in Texas, and 30 to 40 employees in Alabama, "due to the completion of tasks related to day-to-day operations of the Shuttle fleet."The cuts will be made in late July and early August after NASA completes the final flight of Endeavour, scheduled for April 29, and the flight of Atlantis on June 28."The accomplishments of this team are unmatched in human spaceflight," Virginia Barnes, the company's president, said in a news release. LOS ANGELES, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Clinical and teaching microbiology laboratories are linked with a nationwide salmonella outbreak in the United States that has killed one person and sickened dozens of others, health officials confirmed on Friday.Since August, about 73 people in 35 states have been sickened by salmonella bacteria, and some of those cases involve a strain of Salmonella typhimurium sold commercially to laboratories, officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in remarks published by msnbc.com.Illnesses have been tied to laboratories from Alaska to New York, with most reporting one or two cases. Five cases have been reported in Washington state and four in Minnesota.The first illness occurred late August and the most recent cases were reported March 8, according to the CDC.The patients include employees and students of the laboratories, as well as children in the homes of people who work or study at the labs.Patients ranged in age from less than one to 91, with a median age of 24, the CDC said.Cases that developed after March 19 may not yet be included in the total because of the lag time in assessing and reporting illness, said the report.CDC officials warned that bacteria used in the labs can be transmitted through contaminated lab coats, pens, notebooks, car keys and other items brought into the labs.The CDC is working with local and state health departments, the American Society for Microbiology and the Association of Public Health Laboratories to track the outbreak, the report said.Salmonella infections typically result in diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. They can be dangerous in very young children or people with compromised immune systems.
