The 2020 election is set to be unlike any other in history. With the COVID-19 pandemic, election officials expect up to 70% of all ballots to come in through the mail. There have been claims of fraud by President Donald Trump, but experts say the data does not support those claims."Somebody is more likely to be struck by lightning than they are to commit voter fraud,¡± said Lawrence Nordon, director of the election reform program at the Brennan Center for Justice, a non-partisan public policy group at NYU.Nordon says in the last few federal elections, 25% of all votes were cast through the mail. He says it can not only be more convenient, but an important tool when it comes to verifying results.¡°Mail ballots are paper ballots. That means we do have an opportunity to audit all of those ballots,¡± said Nordon. ¡°But I think people should feel very comfortable with the security of the system.¡±As for security, election officials take extra measures to ensure the integrity of the ballot. Firstly, mail-in voting reduces the risk of foreign interference to nearly zero. Mail-in ballots are printed on a specific type of paper with technical markings that are difficult to duplicate. They also include several local elections like city council, school boards, and ballot initiatives. It means there are thousands of different ballots for our country¡¯s 3,000 counties. Then you consider the actual ballot itself. It comes in a secrecy envelope that is connected to each individual voter who needs to sign it. That signature is verified by judges who are sometimes trained by the FBI to detect inconsistencies.Counties across the country also have system in place that update voter registration, death records, and address changes daily while they go in and cross-reference the data as well to make sure the ballots are going where they are supposed to and people are who they say they are.¡°[Voter fraud] is not a thing. I think we¡¯ve had one prosecution in 15 years,¡± said Paul Lopez, clerk and recorder for the city and county of Denver.Lopez says of the nearly 213,841 votes cast by Denver residents in the state primary on June 30, 211,626 were cast through the mail. And this is for a state that had the highest voter turnout of 77% in 2016.¡°The biggest thing we can do is inform folks and make sure they understand the process, make sure they understand that it¡¯s secure, that it¡¯s safe, that it¡¯s transparent,¡± said Lopez. This is not to say there are not cases of voter fraud; there are. In July 2019, prosecutors in North Carolina filed charges against a Republican political operative accused of ballot tampering in a congressional election in 2018.Since 1982, the conservative Heritage Foundation says there have been 1,088 proven cases of individual voter fraud. That may sound like a lot, but the Brennan Center for Justice says considering the hundreds of millions of votes cast in that time, it is considered so rare and happens on such a small scale, that it does not warrant the broad-based red flags some people raise. 3041

Swiss authorities are investigating a series of bizarre deposits.Investigators in Geneva are trying to understand why two Spanish women flushed roughly €100,000 (0,000) down toilets at a UBS bank branch and three nearby restaurants.Vincent Derouand of the Geneva Prosecutors' Office said the first incident involving cut-up €500 bills occurred in May.Security camera footage led investigators to the two Spanish women. Derouand said that a lawyer for the women confirmed the cash belonged to them."It may be illegal [cash] and they tried to get rid of it," Derouand said. "We have to check where the money is coming from."Derouand declined to identify the women."This is a strange story," he said. "It does not happen often."UBS declined to comment on the cash found at the Geneva branch, citing the ongoing investigation. The European Central Bank plans to kill off the €500 note next year because of concerns that it "could facilitate illicit activities."Europe's top law enforcement agency says the note (worth about 0) is often used by money launderers because of its unusually large denomination and portability. Plus, using cash helps criminals keep transactions and savings anonymous. In a 2015 report, Europol said cash was still the "instrument of choice" for terrorists and €500 bills were in high demand.Switzerland was long known for banking privacy laws that made it possible for banks to refuse to hand over their customers' data to authorities. But in recent years the country has agreed to start sharing financial information with outsiders, including the European Union and the U.S. 1610

Taylor Swift was once the sweetheart of Nashville and a frequent attendee of the CMA Awards. She racked up 11 wins and 26 nominations before crossing over to becoming a global pop star. Since that time she has moved away from her country roots. In fact, she has not seen a CMA nominee since 2014 when she was nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year. She is back on the CMA ballot this year not as a performer but as a songwriter. She wrote Little Big Town's chart-climber "Better Man", which is up for Single of the Year, Song of the Year and featured on a nomination for Album of the Year.Little Big Town is also nominated for Vocal Group of the Year. The Song of the Year nomination is what has Music Row talking about whether they will see Swift at this year's award show. That particular award is given to the writer of the song, not the performer. That means if the song is a winner tonight at Bridgestone Arena it would make sense to see Swift on stage to accept the award. Her last appearance at the show was just a year ago for the 50th anniversary when she presented Garth Brooks with the award for Entertainer of the Year.?Swift is in the middle of a busy week. In the past 24 hours she released the full track list for her upcoming album and also shared videos from a private listening party she had for lucky listeners at home.Swift's new album, "Reputation" drops Friday. To find out if she will make an appearance at the 51st Annual CMA Awards, tune in tonight at 7p.m. (CT) on ABC.  1518

The body of a New Jersey man, whose body was recovered 1,500 feet underwater in California, is considered to be the deepest recovery ever performed in the United States and Canada, officials say.According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, 29-year-old Ryan Normoyle rented a boat on Lake Tahoe on Aug. 10.That evening, Ryan's rental boat washed ashore in Glenbrook, Nevada, but Normoyle wasn't on it.On the boat, the department said they found Normoyle's phone, which recorded Ryan jumping off the boat into the lake. The video also showed the boat drifting away, which the department said was because Ryan had left in gear. The New York Times reported that the camera captured Normoyle trying to swim to the boat for about two minutes before disappearing from the frame. With the help of GPS data captured from Ryan's phone while recorded, the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the Washoe County Marine Unit, and the University of California Davis Research Team helped in the search. On Sept. 23, the nonprofit Bruce's Legacy, which specializes in underwater recovery, was called in by Ryan's family to aid in the investigation. In a blog post, Bruce's Legacy founder Keith Cormican detailed how winds chased them off the lake around noon, and on the second day, they ran into electrical issues. Not wanting to give up, Cormican used sonar on the ROV after losing power to it.After a few hours, a body image, which was identified as Ryan's, showed up on the sonar at 1,551 feet. Unfortunately, they lost hold of him and weren't able to bring him to the surface, but on Sept. 27, they found Ryan at 1,565 feet, and after two hours, the crew pulled up Normoyle's body, by hand, to the surface.According to the police department, Cormican said this was the deepest recorded recovery in the United States and Canada. Previously, the deepest recovery in Lake Tahoe was in 2018 at a depth of 1,062 feet. 1944
