An 18-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department has died after being involved in a shooting Wednesday on Detroit's west side."Today is a tragic day for the Detroit police family," Detroit Police Chief James Craig said while addressing media outside of Sinai-Grace Hospital. Two police officers from Detroit's 12th Precinct were shot when responding to a report of a home invasion.Craig said that once officers arrived on scene, occupants in the home began frantically running out of the home because of a suspect inside the home with a high-powered rifle.Additional officers were called and four total officers made entry into the home in search of the suspect. Defense officials have shut down the program everywhere but Alaska, where the mission survives because the state is so large and some communities are so remote.The program started in 1956 when the residents of St. Mary’s, Alaska, had no money to buy children Christmas presents after flooding severely impacted hunting and fishing. Since then, Guard members try to visit at least two rural communities a year, delivering Christmas gifts and other needed supplies. They’ve been to remote burgs with names like Koyukuk, Savoonga, Illiamna, Kwethluk and Tuntuliak. The Lower Kuskokwim School District needs to move the school, but local officials say finding money for a new school has been challenging.River erosion also threatened Napakiak’s firehouse and city garage, so those structures were moved in July.The village also has applied for permits to relocate the boat harbor, which was destroyed by storms in May. The five-year plan, Benedict said, is to move everyone to the other side of an air strip. But at least for one day, the residents of Napakiak didn’t have to worry about the erosion creeping ever closer to their homes, and instead could focus on the smiles or even smudges of chocolate from the ice cream sundaes on their children’s faces.Marcus Billy thought he received a basketball, but he became a little confused when he saw it was lime green and not orange. A nearly 7-hour long standoff which began with six officers getting shot while serving a warrant has to an end late Wednesday evening, Philadelphia Police confirmed. As of early Thursday morning, a SWAT unit was in the process of clearing th scene.Police spokesman Eric Gripp said that the six officers were released from the hospital by late Wednesday evening. An officer who was injured in an accident while responding to the scene remains hospitalized. Gripp said that law enforcement attempted to make contact with the suspect who was barricaded throughout the evening. Officials from ATF confirmed were on the scene, assisting local police. Philadelphia Police requested the media not air live helicopter footage of the officers' tactical positions. Officers held those positions all evening despite spurts of gunfire.Ross told reporters that officers attempted to serve a warrant at a residence near Temple University around 4:30 p.m. Officers reached the kitchen of the residence when the suspect began shooting at officers. Ross said that officers dove through windows and took cover to avoid the gunfire. Following the shooting, officers retreated as dozens of other units responded. Temple University also was in a lockdown.Two officers who were trapped in the residence for several hours were freed, Gripp confirmed. A study from the National Institutes of Health claimed that permanent hair dye and chemical hair straighteners could increase the risk of breast cancer among women. The study published online on Dec. 4 in the International Journal of Cancer found that women who used permanent hair dye and chemical hair straighteners were 9% more likely to develop breast cancer than those who did not. The NIH used a sample size of 46,709 women. Researchers stressed that there was little to no increase in breast cancer risk for semi-permanent or temporary dye use."Researchers have been studying the possible link between hair dye and cancer for a long time, but results have been inconsistent," said corresponding author Alexandra White, Ph.D., head of the NIEHS Environment and Cancer Epidemiology Group. "In our study, we see a higher breast cancer risk associated with hair dye use, and the effect is stronger in African American women, particularly those who are frequent users. "While the study suggests an increased risk for women, these results need to be replicated in other studies to make a conclusion, the NIH said. When asked if women should stop dyeing or straightening their hair, co-author Dale Sandler, Ph.D., chief of the NIEHS Epidemiology Branch, said, "We are exposed to many things that could potentially contribute to breast cancer, and it is unlikely that any single factor explains a woman’s risk. A woman is in custody and a toddler is missing from Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, after the child's father said a rideshare driver abducted his daughter on Saturday evening, according to police documents and a news release.Paul Johnson said he was riding in a car with Lyft and Uber stickers with his daughter and a friend, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Allegheny County police.Johnson said that when he got out of the car and went to get his daughter out of the car seat, the driver drove away with the toddler, the complaint said. The complaint didn't identify the child, but a police news release said she is named Nalani.Johnson told detectives he tried calling the driver's cellphone multiple times but she never picked up, so he called 911 around 5 p.m. ET.Police arrested driver Sharena Nancy, 25, in the vehicle during a traffic stop around 7:30 p.m. ET, but did not find the child inside, the complaint said.According to the complaint, Nancy told detectives that Johnson sold the child to an individual for ,000 and asked her to complete the dropoff.Nancy said he showed her a photo of a black woman she was supposed to meet and asked her to drive the toddler "20 minutes" from a gas station in Monroeville along US Route 22 to meet the woman, the complaint says.Nancy said she was told the woman would then "flag" her down and Nancy was to turn over the toddler, the complaint says.Nancy told detectives she encountered a silver SUV with out-of-state plates parked on the side of the road and did as she had been instructed -- passing the toddler and the carseat over to a woman standing next to the car and then driving off.
