There's a new app out there that's promises to help people check for skin cancer. It's called Miiskin.It's the first app to use artificial intelligence to do full-body skin mapping. It also uses augmented reality to track how moles, freckles and skin change over time.Doctors say apps like these can actually help during this pandemic.“That has led to a significant decrease in visits for screening such as colon cancer, lung cancer, and skin cancer is of course one of those that actually is affected by the pandemic,” said Dr. Arturo Loaiza-Bonilla with Cancer Treatment Centers of America.When doctors and patients are dealing with cancer, time is of the essence.Tools like this app don't replace doctor's visits, but they can help with early detection.“One month of losing a cancer that was just newly found is almost a 10% increase in mortality, so if the screening comes a year later when the cancer is already starting, then we are in a pretty dark situation,” said Loaiza-Bonilla.Doctors at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America say that while the apps shouldn't replace a full physical assessment, they can be used as an additional tool to track new moles and see how certain things develop.If you are at a higher risk for skin cancer and want to use one of these apps, it's important that you do so under doctor supervision.These apps are still not considered a medical device.Doctors hope these tools can eventually be paired with medical records, so patients can be empowered by knowing more about their own health. 1537

Three people trapped in an inactive West Virginia mine for several days were rescued on Wednesday, state officials said.The three West Virginia residents were brought to the surface and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, Samantha Smith, a spokesperson with the West Virginia Department of Commerce, told CNN late Wednesday.Kayla Williams, 25 of Artie; Erica Treadway, 31, of Pax and Cody Beverly, 21 of Dorothy, were alert, talking and walking without assistance, Raleigh County Sheriff Scott Van Meter said in an interview. He said the three had snacks and water with them."It's a miracle they were found alive," the sheriff said.Williams, Treadway and Beverly were among a group of four people who were reported missing Saturday after an abandoned ATV they were believed to be riding was found near the entrance of the Rock House Powellton mine in Clear Creek, according to a statement from West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice.One person, Eddie Williams, 43 of Artie, emerged late Monday, according to the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training.He said the three people left trapped were alive and gave authorities details of their location, according to Justice's office.Rescue teams failed to find them Monday and Tuesday. Three inmates in a suburban Atlanta jail are being credited with saving a deputy's life.The Gwinett County Sheriff's Office says the trio noticed the officer was not feeling well as he conducted security procedures.After he returned to his seat, the deputy lost consciousness. He then fell to the floor and hit his head.The inmates began pounding on the doors loudly enough to wake up the deputy, who then opened the cell doors.After that, he lost consciousness again. But the inmates stayed by his side and administered aid until help arrived.The deputy is now recovering at home."These inmates came to his aid because our deputy, like most law enforcement officers, treats people with the dignity they deserve," the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook. "These inmates had no obligation whatsoever to render aid to a bleeding, vulnerable deputy, but they didn't hesitate. Many people have strong opinions about law enforcement officers and criminals, but this incident clearly illustrates the potential goodness found in both.""We're proud of our deputy, whose strong desire to serve gave him the strength to activate the door release when he believed an inmate needed his help.
