The California Department of Public Health shows that nearly half of the deaths in the Central Valley area from the Latino community. They also account for more than 60 percent of the cases.“If there is no one to pick in the fields, if there is not one to pack the meat, which feeds a majority of the country, then the whole country would definitely feel it,” said Dr. Juan Bautista, the medical director at Bautista Medical Center.Dr. Bautista is part of the 60 percent of Latinos that got the virus. Although being relatively healthy, his underlying asthma condition made fighting the virus tough. He was hospitalized for six days.Dr. Bautista says Latinos are high-risk because of the prevalence of diabetes and asthma in the community.“Diabetes places a major factor, not just in your immune system, but also your response to the medications we give with COVID,” he explained.Medications like Dexamethasone can cause patients’ blood sugar to rise. For a diabetic patient, this medication can have bad side effects or even be taken off the table as a form of treatment due to the risks.Reina Gonzalez spent an entire month over the summer on a ventilator. She is a breast cancer survivor, and now, a survivor of this deadly virus. On Tuesday, she was celebrating her granddaughter’s first birth. Months after her initial diagnosis and release from the hospital, she is still unable to work due to her physical condition.“When I start moving or walking or any minimum exercise, my pulse races up a lot and my heart,” described Gonzalez.She feels fortunate to be able to apply for workers' compensation to help pay for her medical bills, but most of Dr. Bautista’s patients aren’t as fortunate.Dr. Bautista says the average cost of a test in the Central Valley is between 0 to 0. In an effort to increase testing, Dr. Bautista is now offering free, rapid testing at his practice. He and his staff are available every weekday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., an optimal time for working families. The testing is free and turns out results in 30 minutes or less.Fast test results are critical in this underserved community. It slows down the spread of the disease because people are not returning to work as they wait for test results.“They are not willing to miss work,” said Dr. Bautista, regarding the financial need of his patients.During this time, Dr. Bautista says he has learned medicine isn’t the only thing he needs in order to help his patients. He now finds himself educating them on social services available to them.During the rapids test sessions, programs offering financial aid to those who test positive are offered. The next issue to tackle when it comes to the impact of the virus is the long-term health complications many are left with.“We are starting to learn now that this, although it may have a low death rate the disability it brings, is definitely significant,” he said.With a high survival rate, many will need long-term care, leaving a community that has been disproportionately attacked by this virus with possibly decades of chronic health care issues. 3866

The CDC is changing their recommendations for travelers, urging them to pay attention to local and state recommendations, and dropping their 14-day quarantine for international or out-of-state travelers.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated their travel requirements Friday, according to multiple media reports. They now advise travelers to "follow state, territorial, tribal and local recommendations or requirements after travel." Previously, the agency recommended a 14-day quarantine for those returning from international destinations or any area with a high concentration of coronavirus cases.The guidelines still urge travelers to limit their risk of infecting others by social distancing and wearing a mask. “You may feel well and not have any symptoms, but you can still spread COVID-19 to others," the CDC states on their website.There are still international travelers who are not allowed to enter the U.S. based on presidential proclamations. Foreign nationals who have spent time in these countries in the last 14 days before travel cannot enter the U.S.: China, Iran, United Kingdom, Ireland, Brazil, and most of Europe. The FBI, Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Director of National Intelligence issued a joint statement Wednesday night confirming an investigation is underway over a hack of government networks.Cybersecurity officials at Homeland Security ordered federal civilian agencies to immediately disconnect or power down affected SolarWinds Orion products from their network.Previously, officials said that the network was “compromised.”“The compromise of SolarWinds’ Orion Network Management Products poses unacceptable risks to the security of federal networks,” CISA Acting Director Brandon Wales said earlier this week. “Tonight’s directive is intended to mitigate potential compromises within federal civilian networks, and we urge all our partners—in the public and private sectors—to assess their exposure to this compromise and to secure their networks against any exploitation.”On Wednesday, SolarWinds acknowledged the cyberattack.“SolarWinds has been made aware of a cyberattack to our systems that inserted a vulnerability within our SolarWinds? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is cracking down on glasses and contact prescribers who may try to stop you from shopping around.The FTC sent warning letters to almost 30 different eyeglass prescribers. The letters say the prescriber must give a copy of the prescription to the patient without them asking.They can't charge a special fee for doing that and they can’t force you to buy from them just because they did the examination.“However, there were a lot of prescribers that just weren't doing that,” said Linda Sherry, Director of National Priorities at Consumer Action. “If you asked for it, in most cases, you would get it. They also are required to post notices in the offices to say that you have a right to your prescription and a lot of prescribers we're not posting those notices.”Consumer Action is educating people on their eyeglass and contacts prescription rights. Sherry says prescriptions allow you to go online and to other eyeglass and contact sellers to shop for the best deal.Another thing she says to ask for, especially if you're shopping online, is pupil distance. It may not be on the prescription.“I had an experience where I asked for the pupil distance and was told that would be to put the pupil distance on, so I was like, ‘I've been coming here for three years and you've obviously measured my pupil distance, because I bought glasses from you. So, all you have to do is open your records and tell me my pupil distance.’ And they did do it, but there was that moment there when she said for the pupil distance measurement when I thought, ‘oh, something's very, very wrong here.’”Prescribers shouldn't be charging for that info either.If you're having trouble getting prescription information from your provider, you can contact the FTC.
