SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier arrived in its new home port of San Diego Monday, bringing thousands of sailors and hundreds of millions of dollars in estimated annual economic impact for the region.The Navy will relocate another carrier strike group, the USS Carl Vinson, to San Diego this summer, giving the city three carriers for the first time in a decade. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This year marks 75 years since many turning points in World War II, including the end of the war on Aug. 14. Now, the men and women who served are in their 90s and many say despite the time, they remember exactly where they were the moment they found out the war was over.“We were told you’re just going on a flight, and we were told you don’t have to, the wars over,” said 93-year-old Navy veteran Al Hansen.“The war ended and they let us all, gave us liberty for the day,” remembered 94-year-old Navy veteran Don Hubbard.RELATED: WWII veteran honors D-Day anniversary with world-wide bell ringingTo commemorate the day, the USS Midway held a ceremony. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a man died in Fallbrook late Friday night.Deputies responded to the 440 block of Ammunition Road around 10:40 p.m. to assist the North County Fire Department with an injured man.When deputies arrived, they found a man identified as Nicolas Ramirez suffering from an unknown traumatic injury.Ramirez was then taken to the hospital where he later died. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sticker-shock of college can be daunting, but with planning and some research there is financial aid out there for the taking.To get the process started families must fill out the Free Application for Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA.The FAFSA is roughly 156 questions and looks at a family's financial situation.Colleges nationwide use the FAFSA to determine the amount of financial aid to award to students,The form can now be filled out online but college planning expert Ron Caruthers also recommends printing a paper copy for reference because it contains more guidance.“It’s my bread and butter because so many families really make mistakes and don’t understand the process," said Caruthers. "I’ve worked for 25+ years helping families pick schools that have money, not make mistakes on the FAFSA and save a ton of money on college.”Families can start submitting FAFSA’s October 1 and the deadline is March 2.Caruthers recommends doing so by January.He says a major mistake families make is listing assets they're not required to, including their home, IRA's, and personal property.What you should list: cash, stocks and bonds that aren't in a retirement account, and equity in a rental home.“This is an area of enormous stress because, for a lot of families, next to their house this is going to be their biggest investment, and it's going to come in a very short period of time, unlike a house they can pay off over 30 years,” said Caruthers.He says it's important to be detail-oriented on the FAFSA, for example, making sure you put income in the right line. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council voted in favor Tuesday of an affordable housing plan which critics say could raise rents and home prices across San Diego.The vote, which came after hours of public comment, was five to four in support of the proposal.Council President Georgette Gomez moved to require developers to reserve 10 to 15 percent of new housing units in complexes for low to moderate income households. The plan includes other options, but if all else fails the proposal would raise the affordable housing in-lieu fee developers pay by 72 percent. For a typical 1,800 square foot unit, that would be an additional ,000 in construction costs that could be passed on to tenants. “We’re in a royal housing mess, and I almost would like to say, today, believe it or not, are the good old days for housing, because we’re staring straight into a bigger problem,” said Borre Winckel, who heads the San Diego Building Industry Association. But supporters of the proposal say the city needs the housing. Many workers are now being forced to commute from far away because there is no housing available. A report last year found the region still needed more than 140,000. "We’re certainly not trying to drive the cost of housing. Our number one goal here is to try to incentivize and regulate in a more fair manner the building of affordable housing,” said Keith Maddox, of the San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council. Councilman Scott Sherman, who opposes the proposal, said the larger fee would add to a market rate rental and ,000 to the price of a home. The money from the fee would go into a pot used to pay for affordable housing developments. Marissa Tucker, a robotics marketing manager who lives in North Park, said her life success is only because she was able to grow up in an affordable home. “My dad, he works at a grocery store,” she said. “My mom was never able to hold a stable job because she has a mental disability, and so without having affordable housing and be able to provide that stability, we’re not always afforded the same opportunities.” Under the proposal, developers would also avoid the fee by rehabilitating existing units - or donate land that could be used for affordable housing.
