(AP) — A filly broke both front legs at the end of a workout on the main dirt track at Santa Anita and was euthanized on Thursday, becoming the 22nd horse to suffer catastrophic injuries since Dec. 26.Trainer and owner David Bernstein said the 3-year-old filly named Princess Lili B broke down just past the finish line after a half-mile workout.Bernstein told KTLA-TV that Princess Lili B apparently took a step as she changed leads, which led to her breaking her left ankle and then her right ankle. A lead change refers to which set of legs, left or right, leads or advances forward when a horse is galloping."She was always very sound and we've never had a problem with her," Bernstein said in the interview. "We didn't have to train her on any medication. She's just a lovely filly to be around."Bernstein said the filly's exercise rider didn't indicate any problem with the dirt surface."I think it's one of those things that happens, sadly enough," the trainer told KTLA.Bernstein said he wouldn't hesitate to train another horse on Santa Anita's surface again."I know they've done the best job they can possibly do," he said. "They're hired a number of great experts to handle this surface."Santa Anita had reopened its main track for limited workouts on Monday, with horses limited to jogging and galloping while the surface was monitored for any irregularities that may have caused the deaths of 22 horses since the winter meet began on Dec. 26.This week's workouts were the first conducted under the track's new training protocols, which include two veterinarians observing each horse going to and from the track. 1648

As federal government aid begins to wane, hotels across the US says that the majority of jobs in the industry could disappear in the coming months.According to a Hotel & Lodging Association survey, 74% of hotel jobs could be eliminated if additional federal funds are not dispersed to the hospitality industry. Of those surveyed, 69% of operators said that hotel stays have been cut by more than half.The Hotel & Lodging Association says that one in 25 US jobs are supported by the hotel industry, equaling 8 million jobs.According to the federal government, the hospitality industry in total had 16 million employees before the pandemic. In April, that number was cut in half. Federal statistics show about half of the jobs lost in the spring have been regained. But many of those jobs remain in peril.Two-thirds of hotels say that they will go out of business if current revenues remain constant for the next six months."It's time for Congress to put politics aside and prioritize the many businesses and employees in the hardest-hit industries. Hotels are cornerstones of the communities they serve, building strong local economies and supporting millions of jobs," said Chip Rogers, president and CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. They usually come with monthly requirements though, like direct deposit, online bill pay, enrolling in e-statements, and using your debit card a certain amount of times. But those are things many people already use.In terms of saving versus paying down debt now, experts say to save.“That's really critical. An Alabama woman alleges Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore sexually assaulted her when she was a teenager, her attorney Gloria Allred said Monday.Allred said her client, Beverly Young Nelson, would be willing to testify under oath and called on the Senate judiciary committee to hold a hearing and subpoena Moore."Mr. Moore attacked me when I was a child," Nelson said, adding that she was 15 when he began flirting with her and 16 at the time of the alleged assault.
