VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Juneteenth holiday is far from new. It’s been celebrated by African Americans in the country for years.“I actually didn’t learn about that until I was an adult, just in general conversation speaking with other people,” said Erica Parham.Parham is a product of the Hampton school division in Virginia Beach area.“I wasn’t taught that in school at all,” she adds.She wants to see change. Her boys, Jaxon and Sebastian, go to Kempsville Elementary School in Virginia Beach.“They knew about Fourth of July in day care,” but they were never taught about the day in 1865 when African American slaves found out they were free."I do believe that large parts of the Virginia Department of Education curriculum are inadequate to really tell the story of slavery and racism in Virginia,” said Brian Teucke.Teucke is an 8th grade civics teacher at Page Middle School and also the president of the Gloucester Education Association."There are huge gaps in our curriculum that need to be addressed, and [they] can be by enhancing the curriculum,” he adds.The Department of Education says new history textbooks and curriculum must correspond with the standards of learning, and revising the SOLs takes about two years, meaning it will take some time before Juneteenth makes it inside textbooks.The department encourages teachers to use online resources in the classroom. VISTA (CNS) - A male recently reported missing from Oceanside was hospitalized this morning after he was struck by an SUV in Vista.The collision was reported just before 3 a.m. at 2405 N. Santa Fe Ave., said San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Kevin Johnston.The pedestrian was struck by a red Dodge Dakota that was southbound on Santa Fe Avenue. ``The driver of the Dodge Dakota looked down briefly and when he looked back up a pedestrian was standing in the middle of the roadway in front of him,'' Johnston said. ``The driver of the Dodge Dakota attempted to swerve but collided with the pedestrian.''Oceanside firefighters provided first aid to the pedestrian who suffered an apparent broken leg and was unconscious with what appeared to be severe head trauma, the sergeant said.He was taken to Palomar Medical Center for treatment, Johnston said. Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department uniform, investigators said.Deputies said the boy pulled the Ford Explorer with red and blue lights into the driveway of a home Monday about 6 p.m.The boy, who was wearing a uniform with a firearm in the belt holster, went to the front door and said he was there to investigate a domestic disturbance.The homeowner said there was no problem and no one at the home had called for help. WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General William Barr defended the aggressive federal law enforcement response to civil unrest in America as he testified for the first time before the House Judiciary Committee. He pushed back against angry, skeptical Democrats who said President Donald Trump’s administration is unconstitutionally suppressing dissent. The hearing, held Tuesday as the late civil rights icon John Lewis laid in state steps away in the Capitol rotunda, highlighted the wide election-year gulf between the two parties on police brutality and systemic racism in law enforcement, which Barr argued does not exist. Massive protests have sparked unrest across the nation following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police and calls for reform have grown louder.Tuesday's hearing is part of a series of hearings in which Democrats on the committee are holding to investigate what they say has become a politicized department. In his opening statements, Barr referred to an investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign's ties to Russia as "bogus" and asserted that he acts independently of President Donald Trump and his administration. He also addressed ongoing protests across the country and the Trump administration's use of federal agents to restore peace. Barr referred to protesters as "anarchists" and "violent rioters" have "hijacked" peaceful movements following the death of George Floyd.Barr did refer to Floyd's death as "horrible" and added that the incident "understandably jarred the whole country and forced us to reflect on longstanding issues in our nation."When pressed by Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-New York, on the deployment of federal agents to cities like Portland, Barr said that he's made it clear that he would like to "pick the cities" where agents are sent, "based on law enforcement need." During the questioning he said he does not believe there is widespread systemic racism with law enforcement entities in the country. He also said he is against the removal of qualified immunity, a statute that protects law enforcement agents from prosecution in some use of force cases. Democrats pressed Barr on his handling of the Mueller report and the Department's intervention in legal cases against two Trump allies: Roger Stone and Michael Flynn.In Stone's case, the Department of Justice backtracked on an initial sentencing recommendation of between seven and nine years in prison for lying to Congress. The department later recommended a lesser sentence, prompting all DOJ lawyers assigned to Stone's case to resign. Trump later commuted Stone's sentence.Democrats repeatedly pressed Barr on his Department's decision to rescind its initial sentencing recommendations as favoritism and cronyism.
