KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As people follow COVID-19 guidance from experts and avoid large gatherings, the holidays will look a lot different this year.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended people not travel this holiday season and to celebrate with the people in their household. He says the best thing people can do is be honest with themselves and acknowledge they miss the holiday traditions."There is power in awareness and this can help us pivot, to shift our thoughts so we are not lingering in self-defeating thoughts," Sainte said.When people were asked what traditions they would miss most, some of the answers included going to church, going to the Nutcracker Ballet, and attending the plaza lighting ceremony among other things.However, the most consistent response was spending time with family and loved ones.Sainte says these are sentiments he's hearing from the patients he serves."Obviously the holidays are always a hard time for people because of loss and not being with specific loved ones. So, I feel as if it’s been magnetized because of the safety parameters," he adds.According to Sainte, acknowledging your feelings is just the first step. He suggests coming up with new traditions or putting a twist on your old favorites."Whether that is setting up a Zoom Christmas party or maybe sending out some holiday letters or emails there are things that we can do," Sainte said. "Change is hard, right? But, it’s not always bad. There are still ways to celebrate the season with your loved ones, even if you cannot engage in those favorite traditions."Finally, he says if you or someone you know is struggling day-to-day with the holiday blues, reach out for help. "I advocate to all of my clients, reach out to the back of your insurance card and call that number and ask if you have providers who fall within your network," he said. Some employers also offer an Employee Assistance Program that makes mental health professionals, and other services, available to employees at little or no cost. Just about everyone who's played with a projectile toy has gotten a version of the warning "You'll shoot your eye out!"But in a report published Monday in the medical journal BMJ Case Reports, doctors warn that popular toy Nerf guns really can put eyes at risk.The case report details three unrelated cases within three months treated in the Moorfields Eye Hospital accident and emergency department in London. Two adult patients had pooling of blood and inflammation in the eye after being shot with a Nerf gun. One 11-year-old patient had pooling of blood, inflammation and damage to the outer retinal layers of the eye."Significant Nerf gun ocular injuries are not reported in the literature, as far as we know," the researchers write.In the emergency room at the eye hospital, doctors are used to attending to traumatic injuries. It was the extent of the injury from a children's toy that surprised Dr. Mukhtar Bizrah, the lead author of the study."Nerf guns are used by children, and I was not expecting to see blood," he said. All the patients complained of blurred vision and red eyes and were treated to reduce pressure inside the eye, and their symptoms resolved after a few weeks.Injuries to the cornea are common and are not that dangerous, Bizrah said, but the injury sustained in the space between the iris and the pupil is far more dangerous. "One of the patients had angle recession, which is a risk factor for developing glaucoma down the line," he said.All the injuries documented in the case study involved Nerf guns shot from a close distance.One of the patients had been shot by "bullets" from an unlabeled brand, which have firmer heads than branded ones, the researchers said, noting that unbranded bullets are cheaper and tend to be preferred by parents. However, the authors said they could not verify whether branded bullets would have had caused less trauma.Julie Duffy, senior vice president for global communications for Nerf's maker, Hasbro Inc., wrote in an email that Nerf foam darts and foam rounds are not hazardous when used properly. The guns should never be aimed at a person's eyes or face, and the products should never be modified, she said.She added that darts that claim to be Nerf-compatible may not meet safety standards and regulations."NERF products are designed based on years of consumer insights and research, and undergo rigorous reviews and testing to assure that they are safe and fun to play with, and meet or exceed global standards and regulations."Duffy urges parents to read product packaging and note age recommendations: "Ultimately, a parent or caregiver knows his or her child best and is best equipped to make decisions on what forms of play and entertainment are most appropriate for his or her child," she said.Dr. Paul Kivela, president-elect of the American College of Emergency Physicians, said that the study raises concerns."Parents typically afraid of pellet guns. So soft-bullet guns give them a false sense of security that kids are safe. That is clearly not the case," said Kivela, who was not involved in the study. "The pressure of the projectile is important."His advice: If you are going to play with projectiles of any kind, it's best to wear protective eyewear, even though that could be especially tough for children younger than 5."It's best to not have this toy around small children, even if there are older kids in the house," Kivela said. "It is also important to tell children to not shoot at a person's face or from a relatively close distance."Pediatric ophthalmologists at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, were not at all surprised by the report. "We see eye injuries from projectile toys all the time, including Nerf guns. We know that there is always a risk of projectile toys hitting the eye," Dr. Marylou McGregor said. She also recommends using eye protection all the time when playing with such toys.Patients with these kinds of eye injuries have to be monitored for the first week to ensure that there is no rebleeding, said Dr. Cate Jordan of Nationwide Children's Hospital. If pain and blood clotting persists, the entire anterior chamber has to be washed out. Jordan recommends the patient lay low and participate only in quiet activities for the first few weeks. Even after vision returns to normal, they have to be monitored every three months for the first year and then every year for longer-term risks like cataracts or glaucoma. 4457

KENOSHA — Attorneys representing Kyle Rittenhouse, the teen charged with homicide in the shooting deaths of two protesters and the injuring of a third in Kenosha, says the 17-year-old has been wrongfully charged after "acting in self-defense."According to a news release Friday evening, attorney John Pierce of Pierce Bainbridge announced the firm will be representing Rittenhouse.Pierce argues that Rittenhouse "has suddenly found himself at the center of a national firestorm and charged with murder after defending himself from a relentless, vicious and potentially deadly mob attack in Kenosha, Wisconsin."That’s a far different narrative than what local authorities have publicly stated. The Kenosha police chief called the shootings a senseless act of violence on protesters.On Thursday, Kenosha prosecutors described in a criminal complaint that Rittenhouse shot and killed two protesters and injured a third. The charges against him include one count of first-degree intentional homicide; one count of first-degree reckless homicide; one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide; and two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment.In the release, Pierce described what the attorneys will be arguing in court on Rittenhouse's behalf.Pierce argues that when Rittenhouse finished his shift as a lifeguard in Kenosha last Tuesday, he decided he wanted to help clean up damage in Kenosha left amid unrest over the police shooting of Jacob Blake.He and a friend went to a local high school to remove graffiti, according to Pierce. Later that day, they received information about a call for help from a local business owner, whose downtown Kenosha auto dealership was largely destroyed, Pierce says. The business owner said he needed help defending his business.So Rittenhouse and his friend armed themselves with rifles and headed to the business. Pierce added that the weapons were in Wisconsin and never crossed state lines.It was a gun Rittenhouse legally couldn’t carry in Wisconsin due to his age.Rittenhouse and others stood guard at a mechanics shop near the car depot, even after the curfew was in effect.Law enforcement soon began to clear Civic Center Park of protesters, pushing many of these people to where Rittenhouse was standing guard, according to his attorneys.They argue that several times, protesters threatened and taunted Rittenhouse, but he never reacted. "His intent was not to incite violence, but simply to deter property damage and use his training to provide first aid to injured community members, according to the attorneys.They argue that Rittenhouse soon became concerned about protesters injured in clashes with police, and went to provide first aid at a gas station. As he was returning to the mechanics shop after providing aid, he found that police formations had blocked his way, so he returned to the station.Attorneys say protesters then began to chase Rittenhouse, still armed with a long rifle, and he attempted to run away. "Upon the sound of a gunshot behind him, Kyle turned and was immediately faced with an attacker lunging towards him and reaching for his rifle. He reacted instantaneously and justifiably with his weapon to protect himself, firing and striking the attacker," according to Pierce.Court records claim one of the victims, Joseph Rosenbaum of Kenosha, threw a plastic bag at Rittenhouse before the teen shot and killed him. Rittenhouse’s attorneys share a different story.Rittenhouse soon found he was facing against a "mob" as people kicked and swung at him, Pierce argues."In fear for his life and concerned the crowd would either continue to shoot at him or even use his own weapon against him, Kyle had no choice but to fire multiple rounds towards his immediate attackers, striking two, including one armed attacker. The rest of the mob began to disperse upon hearing the additional gunshots," according to Pierce.After allegedly shooting three people, two of whom later died, Rittenhouse walked toward police columns with his hands in the air. "The police did not take Kyle into custody at that time, but instead they indicated he should keep moving," according to the attorneys.But the criminal complaint shows that as he was walking away, Rittenhouse called his friend to tell him that he just killed someone.Kenosha Police Chief Daniel Miskinis said Friday that the shootings never should have happened.“We’ve had two people lose their lives senselessly while peacefully protesting,” Chief Miskinis said.TMJ4 News captured video of Rittenhouse holding his hands in the air as he approached police after the shootings, but officers are seen moving past him to tend to the victims. Chief Miskinis said at the time, there was nothing to suggest Rittenhouse was a threat.“There were a lot of people in the area, a lot of people with weapons and unfortunately a lot of gunfire,” Chief Miskinis said.Pierce meanwhile criticized prosecutors in Kenosha, saying they did not conduct a "serious investigation.""After learning Kyle may have had conservative political viewpoints, they immediately saw him as a convenient target who they could use as a scapegoat to distract from the Jacob Blake shooting and the government’s abject failure to ensure basic law and order to citizens," Pierce concludes.Rittenhouse turned himself into police in his hometown of Antioch, Illinois on Wednesday morning.
