BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Hu Jintao has urged Party schools at all levels to play more important roles in the Party and country's development.     Hu, also Chinese President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remark when he gave a keynote speech to a meeting attended by delegates of the Party schools across the country in Beijing on Monday. "Party committees at all levels should regard the Party school construction as one of the fundamental works."     Hu urged Party schools to adopt reforms and innovative policies in improving their qualities of education.     Party schools should act as a main channel for the Party to train officials on a large scale and increase their abilities to take both foreign and domestic situations into policy making, Hu said.     Party schools should also help the officials improve their abilities to govern the Party itself and resolve its internal problems, he added.     He said that Party schools should act as an important theoretical academy of the Communist Party.     Party schools are expected to provide theories of socialism with Chinese characteristics and make the theories understandable, acceptable and adoptable for the officials.     Innovation in socialism theories should be an essential job for the Party schools, Hu said in the speech, adding that the schools should also unite theories with practice and serve the Party and governments at all levels in decision making.     Another important role that the Party schools should play is imparting modern scientific knowledge, Hu said.     Party schools should cultivate officials with more loyalty to the Party, he said.     Xi Jinping, president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee and also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, chaired the meeting. BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares staged a broad-based rebound on Wednesday, making up the previous day's losses after an overnight rally on Wall Street.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index finished at 2,017 points, a gain of 6.05 percent. The Shenzhen Component Index rose 6.14 percent to 6,679 points.     Combined turnover shrank to 120.81 billion yuan (17.26 billion U.S. dollars) from the previous day's 145 billion yuan.     Gains outnumbered losses by 865 to eight in Shanghai and 743 to two in Shenzhen. Sinopec rose by 10 percent to 8.37 yuan. PetroChina was up 7.49 percent, closing at 11.91 yuan. China Citic Bank gained 6.51 percent to 4.42 yuan.     Telecom shares surged on reports of an imminent approval of 3G licenses. China United Telecommunications rose 10 percent to 6.03 yuan.     A Guangfa Securities note said the rebound showed investor confidence had risen after Tuesday's decline. The sharp rises of energy and banking stocks showed institutional investors were optimistic over market prospects.

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Zhou Yongkang underscored the importance of the rule of law in the country on Tuesday.     Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when addressing the 6th congress of the China Law Society at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.     President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice President Xi Jinping also attended the session.     In his address to the congress, Zhou first expressed appreciation and respect to all Chinese law workers for their contribution to the country.     Zhou said building a country ruled by law has always been the pursuit of the Chinese people.     He said after China initiated its reform and opening up drive 30 years ago, the country has seen remarkable progress in the improvement of its legal system, law education and research.     The principle of rule of law is the premise of the development of China and the well-being of the Chinese people, he said.     Zhou encouraged law workers in China to make further contributions to the country by giving advice on the country's development and safeguarding people's livelihood, thus help the country maintain economic growth and social stability.     Law workers must bear the people-first principle in their minds and try to safeguard the interests of the people according to law, when making or enforcing laws, and when providing legal services.     He also called for law workers to continue to popularize law education among the Chinese public, so that the whole society is encouraged to learn the laws, abide by the laws and use the laws to protect themselves.     Local party and government departments must help address the difficulties of law workers in order to create a favorable environment for law education and research and cultivate more law talents, Zhou demanded.     The China Law Society was founded in 1949 as a national association of legal scholars, jurists, law practitioners and an academic body of legal sciences. The society has now more than 140,000 members.

  

CHENGDU, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao visited quake-hit Sichuan Province over the weekend, showing concern for survivors and inspecting reconstruction work as winter set in.     It was Hu's second visit after the May 12 earthquake. Hu's last visit was on May 16, when quake relief work was in a critical phase.     The 8.0-magnitude quake, centered in Wenchuan County, left more than 69,000 people dead, 374,000 injured, 18,000 missing and millions homeless. He encouraged growers to make good use of these policies and technology to recover losses from the quake.     The president also expressed respect to workers at reconstruction sites. In Hanwang Township, he praised workers for their hard work and encouraged them to live up to the expectations of the quake region and get their jobs done with high quality and efficiency. BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Strengthening relations between China and the European Union (EU) will contribute to the world peace, stability and prosperity amid complicated international situations, Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Thursday.     The significance of Sino-EU relations has surpassed the bilateral level and is of more and more international significance, Hu said during his meeting with European Commission President Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, who is here to attend the seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) to be held on Friday and Saturday. Chinese President Hu Jintao met on Thursday afternoon with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso who is in Beijing to attend the seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) to be held on Oct. 24 to 25    Hu confirmed that China is willing to work with EU to push forward their comprehensive strategic partnership.     The president proposed to consolidate Sino-EU political base under the principle of strengthening strategic mutual trust, to promote concrete cooperation in various sectors in a reciprocal and win-win principle, and to properly tackle concerns and divergent opinions based on mutual respect and equal consultation.     Hu pledged that China is willing to reinforce communication and coordination with EU, jointly deal with the current financial crisis and maintain the stability of the global financial market.     Barroso said during the meeting that the current financial, grain and energy crises, as well as climate change, poverty and terrorist threat require worldwide actions.     He said EU appreciates China's responsible attitude in responding to the financial crisis and hopes to deepen cooperation with China. He said EU-Chinese relations are strategic, strong and mature.
